VADIE LEE BOSWELL DEW CARROLL BASS

WHITEVILLE -- Vadie Lee Boswell Dew Carroll Bass, 65, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. Born in Sumter, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Bartley and Myrtle Weeks Boswell. She was preceded in death by a sister Mildred Nye; and a brother, Robert Boswell.

Bass was a member of Bolton Baptist Church. She was a retired cosmetologist, real estate agent, and certified nursing assistant.

A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16 with a visitation service beginning at 5 p.m. at Bolton Baptist Church, Bolton.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Bass of Whiteville; two daughters, Yvonne Patrick of Bolton, and Debbie Spaulding of Hallsboro; two sons, Buddy Dew of Bolton, and Thomas Dew of Hallsboro; a god-son, Jamie Dew of Clarendon; a sister, Patricia B. Moore of Whiteville; a half-sister, Earlie Mae Jones of High Point; 15 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

DR. BANJAMIN LACY ROSE

Dr. Benjamin Lacy Rose, who served as interim pastor at the Lake Waccamaw Presbyterian Church for one year in the 1960s-70s, died Monday in Richmond, Va.

Rose was a member of the faculty at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond and had served as pastor in other churches in the area, including the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, before retiring from the Wilmington Presbytery in 1978.

“We were blessed to have him,” Lake Waccamaw member Sally Council said of Rose’s tenure in the lake church.

HARRY LEE STRICKLAND

FAIR BLUFF -- Harry Lee Strickland, 72, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare, Whiteville.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at Butler Branch Missionary Baptist Church in Fair Bluff with the Reverends Ronald Alford and Dr. Grayland S. Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include four daughters, Priscilla A. Black, Victoria D. Johnson, Linda J. Evans, all of Fair Bluff; and Vicky Leggett of Hartford, Conn.; four sons, Delane Strickland of Fair Bluff, Bobby Darin Strickland of Virginia Beach, Va., Harry Lee Strickland Jr. and Larry Wayne Strickland, both of San Antonio, Texas; six sisters, Louise Washington, Elouise Graham, Gladys Keel, all of Fair Bluff, Rose M. Freeman and Evon Strickland, both of Atlanta, Ga., and Brenda Kess of Baltimore, Md.; 14 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 17 from 1-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family will receive friends at 45 Fifth Avenue, Fair Bluff.


VINSTON LEE ‘BILL’
STRICKLAND

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Vinston Lee “Bill” Strickland, 71, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2006 in Jefferson, S.C., as a result of an automobile accident. He was born in Horry County, S.C., the son of the late Robert Lee Strickland and Mary Pauline Strickland Strickland.

Graveside services were held Thursday, Nov. 16 at Williamson Cemetery, Green Sea, S.C. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Queen Strickland of Rock Hill, S.C.; a brother, E.L. Strickland of Rock Hill, S.C.; and a sister, Mary S. Watts of Tabor City.


CRAVEN LENNON

EVERGREEN -- Craven Lennon, 78, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Lumberton. He was a farmer.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Piney Grovey Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Lennon Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Oglather Lennon of the home; a daughter, Debbie Lennon of Whiteville; two sons, Michael Lennon, and Craven Lennon Jr. of Evergreen; and a sister, Mocile Lennon of Evergreen.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Friday from noon until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 until 1 p.m., and again following the service.


EDITH PEARL WORLEY

CLARENDON -- Edith Pearl Worley, 62, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at Loris Healthcare, Loris, S.C. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Jesse and Mae Hughes Blackmon.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald Spivey with interment following in the church cemetery, Clarendon. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Roy L. Worley of the home; and a sister, Mona Faye Butler of Whiteville.


INEZ SELLERS TURNER
FOWLER

TABOR CITY -- Inez Sellers Turner Fowler, 84, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at her granddaughter’s residence in Whiteville. She was the daughter of the late Troy and Laura Wright Sellers and the widow of Garland Fowler.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn with the Reverends Wilbur Fipps and Holland Norris officiaing. Interment will follow in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include by a son, Robert F. “Bobby” Turner of Tabor City; a brother, O’Brian Sellers of Leesburg, Fla.; stepmother, Myrtle H. Sellers of Chadbourn; stepbrothers, Daniel Sellers of Riegelwood and John Sellers of Whiteville; stepsisters, Mona Faye Soles of Whiteville, Cecil Cribb of Whiteville, Betty Cartrette of Chadbourn, Carolyn Conner of Cerro Gordo, Mavielee Legg of York, S.C., Mahala Sellers of Whiteville; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday (tonight) at the funeral home.

BLADENBORO -- Edith M. Bridgers Durden, 69, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at Bladen Funeral Home, Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in the Clarkton Cemetery, Clarkton. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three brothers, A.D. Bridgers of Wilmington, James Bridgers of Clarkton, and Bob Bridgers of Shallotte; three sisters, Dorothy Batten of Clarkton, Elizabeth Cheshire of Ashboro, and Gloria Lupton of New Bern.

JOHN O. RUSS

ELIZABETHTOWN -- John O. Russ, 47, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown. He was the son of Nita Russ Baker of Elizabethtown and the late Marvin Russ.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Dublin First Baptist Church with the Reverends Cameron McGill, David Lewis, and Steve Butler officiating. Burial will follow in the Storms Family Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors other than his parents include two sons, Christopher Russ of Tennessee, and John W. Russ of Dublin; a brother, Paul M. Russ of White Oak; a sister, Janice Johnson of Bladenboro; and one grandchild.

SARAH McKINNEY
McMAHAN

RUTHERFORDTON -- Sarah McKinney McMahan, 88, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at the home of her son. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. J.T. McMahan, and the daughter of the late Fred McKinney and Matilda Wilkie McKinney.

The Rev. J.I. McMahan and Sarah served the Whiteville churches for several years.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery with the Dr. Bobby Gantt and the Rev. Terry White. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. McMahan’s Funeral Home of Rutherfordton is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Keith McMahan of Greenville, S.C., Bobby McMahan and Scott McMahan, both of Rutherfordton; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday (tonight) from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

REBA CAUSEY
STRICKLAND

TABOR CITY -- Reba Causey Strickland, 82, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. she was the daughter of the late Maybeery and Bertha Elliott Causey and was preceded in death by her husband, Rhonoake Strickland.

Strickland was a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday school teacher and was a WMU leader. She also had been active in the Agricultural Extension Service Homemakers.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday (today) at Cherry Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Josh Phillips will officate. Burial will follow in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Texford Strickland and Spencer M. Strickland, both of Tabor City; a daughter, Sherry Jean Strickland Shelley of Green Sea, S.C.; a brother, Frank Causey of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters, Pauline Causey Williams of Finklea, S.C., and Bertha Mae Causey Strickland of Tabor City; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
