WHITEVILLE -- Horace Benjamin Whitley, 84, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2006. He was the son of the late Joseph Benberry Whitley and Mary Elizabeth Waff Whitley. He was preceded in death by a son, Milton Ernest Whitley; and brothers, Joseph B. Whitley, and Stanley Whitley.
Whitley was senior vice president of United Carolina Bank until he retired in 1987, and was the Mayor of Whiteville for 34 years.
He served in the United States Army during World War II in the 45th Infantry receiving the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, and the Bronze Star.
He also was a member of Whiteville First Baptist Church serving as a past deacon, and Sunday school teacher. In addition, he was very civic oriented, which included the Whiteville Lions Club where he served as past president and was a life member; president of N.C. Literacy Association; treasurer of Columbus County Literacy Council, N.C. League of Municipalities president from 1984-1985, chairman of the Risk Management Services Board and life member, and was a member of the American Legion.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 at the Whiteville First Baptist Church with the Reverends Bobby Philips, Kendell Cameron Jr., and Kerry Peeler officiating. Burial will follow in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth D. Whitley of Whiteville; a son, Philip W. Whitley and wife Alexandra of Greensville, S.C.; two daughters, Lynda W. Johnston of Whiteville, and Patricia W. Lennon and husband Pete of Powell’s Point; two brothers, William Whitley of Murfreesboro, and Clarence Whitley and wife, Mary of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Lisa W. Johnston and husband Ed of Greenville, S.C., Jason H. Whitley and wife Linda of Charlotte, Simms Toomey and husband Paul of Boone, Bryant B. Johnston and wife Chrissy of Whiteville, Brianna L. Johnston of Whiteville, Daryl P. Inman and wife Beth of Whiteville, and Ashley D. Inman of Whiteville; great-grandchildren, Ava Whitley of Charlotte, Byrson Johnston of Whiteville, Carmen and Ella Grace Inman, both of Whiteville; foster children, Jeff Ward, Carolyn Ward Holt, and Lisa Ward Caines, all of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Columbus County Literacy Council or the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, P.O. Box 636, Whiteville, N.C. 28472
BOILING SPRING LAKES -- Elvra Washington Pringle, 92, formerly of Williamsburg, S.C., died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Winnabow. The Rev. Andre Carr will officate with burial following in the Northwood Cemetery, Southport. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two adopted daughters, Theresa Briggs of Southport, and Odella McDonald of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Erlene Holmes of Andrews, S.C., and the Rev. Juanita P. Pringle of Rochester, N.Y.
Viewing will be held from noon until the time of service at the church.
MARBLE FALLS & BURNET, Texas -- Eldes E. Atkinson, formerly of Chadbourn and Whiteville, died on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006. She was born on Dec. 23, 1912.
Survivors include a son, Tracey P. Bass of Chadbourn, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
HALLSBORO -- Lauranetta Walker, 59, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.
BLADENBORO -- Alice Singletary Hester, 99, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at her residence.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, from Center Missionary Baptist Church, Bladenboro with the Rev. Albert Singletary officiating. Burial will follow in the Kelly Cemetery, Bladenboro. F.W. Newton & Sons Mortuary of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Carrie Green and Jenny Burke of Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Viewing will be on Friday, Nov. 3 from 1-5 p.m. at the funeral home.
NAKINA -- Lizzie Mae Singletary, 71, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, at Premier Living, Lake Waccamaw. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Simon and Mary Eliza Ward Ward, and the widow of Elmer Odell Singletary.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at the Inman Chapel with interment in Myrtle Green Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Melvin Singletary of Tabor City; two daughters, Patricia Gail Singletary and Doris Ann Faulk, both of Nakina; a brother, Corbett Ward of Nakina; four sisters, Lillian Cribb and Gertrude Hathaway, both of Nakina; Aldie Singletary of Lumberton; and Letha Smith of Whiteville; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday (tonight) from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
BLADENBORO -- Fern Lewis Jr., 77, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown. He was a lumber company machine operator.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at Bryant Swamp Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Thurman B. Everett. Burial will follow in the Johnson Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Lewis; a daughter, Marva L. Currie of St. Pauls; three sons, Darnell Lewis, Cecil Lewis, and Delton Lewis, all of Bladenboro; five sisters, Lue Bertha McLeod of Temple Hill, Md., Effie Lee Howard, Lela Julia Shipman, and Carnella Parrish, all of Jersey City, N.J., and Sadie Freeman of Bladenboro.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Thursday (tonight) from noon until 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until noon.
