registrations

Registrations are now underway for the 2007 Whiteville Youth Basketball League. The league is open to boys and girls of ages 5-12. League play will begin in January. Registration fee is $5 for city residents and $15 for non-city residents. A girls-only league is planned to be added for the first time this season so as many girls as possible are urged to sign up to play. Sign-ups for cheerleading are also underway with the above ages and registration fees applying. For more information, contact the Whiteville Department of Parks and Recreation at (910) 642-9052.

A five-yard touchdown run by Anthony Southern and Rich Crutchfield’s third straight extra-point kick lifts Coach Brian Aldridge’s Whiteville Wolfpack to a 21-20 fourth-quarter comeback victory over the host Ayden-Grifton Chargers in the second round of the state 2A high school football playoffs. Southern finishes the night with 118 yards rushing and 65 yards in pass receptions as the Wolfpack overcomes two costly turnovers to put its season record at 11-0. Earlier in the game, Whiteville defensive back McLean Thompson is helped off the field after suffering a slight concussion while making a touchdown-saving tackle. After running on the field to aid Thompson, WHS trainer Brian McCleney asks Thompson if he knows where he is. Thompson replies, “McDonald’s.”
