Key returnees

Senior guards Jerry Moore (left photo) of East Columbus and Chaz Everette (right photo) of West Columbus are back to lead their respective basketball teams this season after both had outstanding seasons as juniors. Everette paced West Columbus to a 21-4 season record, including the Southeastern Conference Tournament championship and a berth in the sectional 1A finals, where the Vikings fell to eventual state champion Wallace-Rose Hill. Moore played a big role for the 2005-06 East Columbus team that won its first-ever Waccamaw Conference regular-season title and also won the conference tournament. Coach Michael Powell’s West Columbus squad opened its 2006-07 season Friday night with a 100-90 road victory over Heide Trask with Everette scoring 41 points. The Vikings will play host to Trask on Tuesday. East Columbus claimed a 66-52 season-opening home floor victory over East Bladen last Tuesday with Moore chalking up 20 points. The Gators will travel to play East Bladen this Tuesday. South Columbus is scheduled to open its 2006-07 season Nov. 27 and will entertain South Robeson. Whiteville will open its season Nov. 28 when it will play host to West Columbus.
