Thanksgiving:
simple things
are often the
most precious

Two groups come to mind when thinking about Thanksgiving, 2006.

There is much sadness in the Riegelwood community as those killed by last Thursday’s torndao are being buried as many of us prepare to celebrate and give thanks for all we have.

One resident, who lives near the tornado site and saw the storm when it came over his house, succinctly stated, “I don’t care about material things any more.”

Our hearts also go out to those who are serving their country in far-flung areas like Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the families who wish their sons, daughters, mom or dads were home and out of harm’s way. Many of our brave servicemen and women look death in the eye every day while the rest of us sit comfortably in our homes.

Riegelwood revealed that life can be very fleeting. But every day, less public tragedies occur – a fatal car wreck, or maybe someone learns they have cancer.

When considering the Riegelwood tragedy and our men and women serving overseas, everyone should pause to celebrate the simple things this Thanksgiving – health, happiness, family, or even life itself – because the simple things are often the most precious.
