WHITEVILLE -- Walter Flowers Jr., 73, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was a truck driver.
Final rites were held Monday, Nov. 20, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Gregory Hewett. Burial followed in the Campground Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife, Martha; daughters, Bettye Felder (William) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Sharon Boone (Harold), Linda George, Mevelyn George, all of Whiteville, and Glenda Cunningham (Dan) of Fayetteville; sons, Charles Flowers (Gwen) of Wilmington, Tarrace George of Florida, Ronald George of Bladenboro; five grandchildren, William Felder IV (Paula) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Maurice L. Flowers and Charlene F. Njoroge (Alfred), both of Stone Mountain, Ga., Beverly Boone and Tevin Demmie, “his buddy and right hand” of Whiteville; five great-grandchlidren, Terrell Flowers, Melissa and Michelle Mbogo of Stone Mountain, Ga., Hannah Wyatt of Lexington, Ky., Ojeida Austin of Brooklyn, N.Y., three sisters, Martha Dowdy, Geneva Bright, both of High Point, Annie Moore (Doug) of Gibsonville; two brothers, John Henry Flowers (Irma Jean) and Rufus Flowers, both of High Point; and a host of other relatives and friends.
ODELL VEREEN
DETROIT, Mich. -- Odell Vereen, 73, formerly of Nakina, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2006, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich.
Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.
VERNON LEE LONG
WHITEVILLE -- Vernon Lee Long, 69, of the Crusoe community, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was born Jan. 12, 1937 in Columbus County, the son of the late Steve Anderson and Ruby Marie Etheridge Long, and the husband of the late Patsy Long.
Long served in the United States Army and retired from the National Guard. He retired as supervisor with Four Seasons Apparel in Tabor City and was a farmer.
Final rites with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov, 22, at Magnolia Baptist Church with the Reverends Olease Boyd, Ervin Etheridge, and Leroy Long officiating. Burial will follow in the Long Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include three sons, Danny Long and wife, Mary, Patrick Long and wife, Stephanie, and Ricky Long and wife, Sandy, all of Crusoe; a daughter, Della Long Price and husband, Ronnie of Crusoe; a special friend, Gloria Thompson; two brothers, Joseph Long of Ash, and David Long of Old Dock; four sisters, Minnie Herring, Alice Ward, and Ada Etheridge, all of Crusoe, and Willaree Wade of Conway, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, Patricia Slater, Raymond Long, Matthew Long, Selena Long, D.J. Long, Patsy Long, Austin Long, Michael Long, Jimmy Price, Stephanie Price, and Jennifer Price; four great-grandchildren, Christian Slater, Brooklyn Slater, Lainey Price and Cayleb Long.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Horace Long, Woodrow Long, Ralph Long and Raymond Long; and two sisters, Iva Clewis and Olive Clewis.
Serving as pallbearers will be Chris Fowler, Keith Thompson, Bryan Thompson, Richard Hyatt, Steven Long, and Steve Long.
DANNY RUIZ JACOBS
RIEGELWOOD -- Danny Ruiz Jacobs, 6, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, as a result of the Riegelwood tornado disaster. He was born Aug. 8, 2000, in Columbus County. He was a student of Acme Delco Elementary School.
Final rites were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Mt. Sinai Holiness Church with the Reverends Mike Jacobs and Brian Beaver officiating. Burial followed in the Delco Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his mother, Leshia Mechel Jacobs of Riegelwood; his father, Eleuterio Ruiz Martinez of Whiteville; a brother, Jessie Ruiz-Jacobs of Riegelwood; maternal grandmother, Zelda Jacobs of Wallace; paternal grandmother, Maria Cruz Martinez Jaimes of Riegelwood, and paternal grandfather, Ines Ruiz of Riegelwood.
He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Donnie C. “Pete” Jacobs.
HENDERSON ROBERTS
BLADENBORO -- Henderson Roberts, 66, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Bethel Baptist Church, Dublin with the Rev. Kevin Maples officiating. Burial will follow in the Roberts Cemetery, Dublin. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Donald Roberts of Chesapeake, Va.; two brothers, Bobby Roberts of Bladenboro, and Preston “Pete” Roberts of Lumberton.
