Butler, a sophomore goalkeeper, averaged 10 saves per game while allowing approximately 2.5 goals per contest. Coach Mike Buckpitt’s WHS squad posted a 12-8-1 record, finishing second among 2A teams in the Waccamaw/Southastern 1A-2A Conference and earning its first state playoff berth since the 2002 season. Hooks and Butler were among 34 players selected from 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A teams in Region 3. They were only two players from the Waccamaw/Southeastern Conference selected to the team.

All-Region 3 soccer honors

Two members of the Whiteville High School boys varsity soccer are among the 34 players selected this week to the 2006 All-Region 3 Team.

Junior forward Ian Hooks and sophomore goal-keeper Josh Butler, who helped pace the Wolfpack to a 12-8-1 record and a berth in the state 2A playoffs this fall, are the only players from the Waccamaw/Southeastern 1A-2A Conference selected to the squad.

The all-region team includes players from all four classifications.

Hooks, who transferred to WHS from Waccamaw Academy this past fall, scored 21 goals this season.

Butler averaged over 10 saves per game while yielding 2.5 goals per game.

Coach Mike Buckpitt’s Wolfpack team finished second among the Waccamaw/Southeastern 2A Conference teams and made its first state playoff appearance since 2002.

Other players named to the All-Region 3 team are Franklin Jones, Niccoe Leon and Jordan Long of Wilmington Hoggard; Brett King and Jason Meyer of Wilmington Ashley; Jarrett Davis, Parker Jones and Quinn Richardson of Wilmington New Hanover; Oliver Klockman and Renick Patterson of Wilmington Laney; Ryan Nagy and C.J. Pennock of West Brunswick; Elliott Franklin, Armando Morales and Steven Traversie of New Bern; George Cox and Chris Smith of D.H. Conley; Horatio Bynes, Stetson Clark and John King of Richlands; Ali Abdie and Adam Wells of South Central; Kirk Peterson of Jacksonville; Jared Smith of White Oak; Tim Paramore of Dixon; Mike Reynolds of Swansboro, Eric Fontanella of Lejeune and Brian Humphrey of Southwest Onslow.

Hooks is one of 10 juniors selected and Butler is one of four sophomores.
