Whiteville High senior point guard Talena Faison returns for her fourth season as a starter for the Lady Wolfpack, which will open its 2006-07 season Tuesday with a home game against West Columbus. Last season, the WHS girls squad posted a 25-1 record, falling to eventual state champion Farmville Central in overtime in the Eastern N.C. 2A championship game at Greenville.

CERRO GORDO - With 36 steals and 42 rebounds, the West Columbus High School girls basketball team snapped a 37-game losing streak last Tuesday night by taking a 37-31 victory over visiting Heide Trask

The Lady Vikings of first-year head coach Pat Byrd picked up their first win since the midway point of the 2004-05 season to even their record at 1-1.

“It was a strong defensive effort,” said Byrd, whose team had fallen just short of the same Trask squad 47-46 to Trask in its season opener at Rocky Point.

Denisha Baker helped pace West Columbus with seven points, six rebounds and three steals. Alex Ward came up with eight steals, six rebounds and six points.

The Lady Vikings also got six points, two steals and two rebounds by Amber Hanson; four points, four steals and six rebounds by Andrea Godwin and six rebounds, five steals and two points by Samantha Blackwell.

West Columbus will travel to play Whiteville Tuesday night.
