Gators fall to Laney

WILMINGTON - Jonathan Moore canned six 3-point shots and finished with 25 points Tuesday night as the host Laney Buccaneers handed the East Columbus Gators a 72-68 basketball loss.

It was the first loss in four games for East Columbus.

Coach Clarence Ganus’ Gators held a 20-15 lead after one quarter, but the 4A Laney squad went on a 22-point run in the second quarter to take a 37-32 halftime lead.

B.J. Patrick scored 18 points for East Columbus while Jermaine Waddell tallied 17 and Jim Freeman had 17.

“We did a good job of getting the ball down low, but we had some difficulty with our outside shooting,” Ganus said.

Jerry Moore, East Columbus’ leading scorer, was limited to five points.

The East Columbus girls team suffered a 63-39 loss to Laney’s powerhouse Lady Buccaneer squad. It was the Lady Gators’ fourth straight loss.

“Laney is probably the best team we will play this year,” said ECHS coach Karlyn Stephens. “They are loaded.”

Taquanna Bress scored 16 points for ECHS.
