OBITUARIES

HORACE BENJAMIN WHITLEY

WHITEVILLE -- Horace Benjamin Whitley, 84, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2006. He was the son of the late Joseph Benberry Whitley and Mary Elizabeth Waff Whitley. He was preceded in death by a son, Milton Ernest Whitley; and brothers, Joseph B. Whitley, and Stanley Whitley.

Whitley was senior vice president of United Carolina Bank until he retired in 1987, and was the Mayor of Whiteville for 34 years.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in the 45th Infantry, receiving the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, and the Bronze Star.

He also was a member of Whiteville First Baptist Church serving as a past deacon, and Sunday School teacher. In addition, he was very civic oriented, which included the Whiteville Lions Club where he served as past president and was a life member; president of N.C. Literacy Association; treasurer of Columbus County Literacy Council, N.C. League of Municipalities president from 1984-1985, chairman of the Risk Management Services Board and life member, and was a member of the American Legion.

Final rites were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 at the Whiteville First Baptist Church with the Reverends Bobby Philips, Kendell Cameron Jr., and Kerry Peeler officiating. Burial followed in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth D. Whitley of Whiteville; a son, Philip W. Whitley and wife Alexandra of Greenville, S.C.; two daughters, Lynda W. Johnston of Whiteville, and Patricia W. Lennon and husband John of Whiteville; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Snead and husband Pete of Powell’s Point; two brothers, William Whitley of Murfreesboro, and Clarence Whitley and wife, Mary of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Lisa W. Johnson and husband Ed of Greenville, S.C., Jason H. Whitley and wife Linda of Charlotte, Simms Toomey and husband Paul of Boone, Bryant B. Johnston and wife Chrissy of Whiteville, Brianna L. Johnston of Whiteville, Daryl P. Inman and wife Beth of Whiteville, and Ashley D. Inman of Whiteville; great-grandchildren, Ava Whitley of Charlotte, Bryson Johnston of Whiteville, Carmen and Ella Grace Inman, both of Whiteville; foster children, Jeff Ward, Carolyn Ward Holt, and Lisa Ward Caines, all of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and numerous nieces and nephews.

KENNETH RENARD
WILSON

TABOR CITY -- Kenneth Renard Wilson, 15, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, at his home.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7 at First Baptist Missionary Church, Tabor City with the Rev. Llewellyn Dewitt officiating. Burial will follow at the Singing Union Cemetery, Tabor City. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Sandra Wilson of the home; his father, Kent Wilson of Longs, S.C.; two sisters, Keisha Wilson of Tabor City, and Trudy Spaulding of the home; his grandmother, Lucille Wilson of Longs, S.C.; and his grandpa, Tony Spaulding of Tabor City.

Visitation will be held at the funeral Monday (tonight) from 1-7 p.m.

The family will receive friends at the home, 206 West Six Street, Tabor City.

WAYNE KINLAW WARD

MONROE -- Wayne Kinlaw Ward, 73, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at his residence. He was born March 27, 1933 in Columbus County, the son of the late John George and Sadie Pierce Ward. Ward retired from Bloomsburg Mills, here.

A service to celebrate his life was held Sunday, Nov. 5, at Love Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Thompson officiating. Entombment followed on Monday, Nov. 6 at Columbus Memorial Park in Whiteville. McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Daphne M. Ward of the home; three sons, Randy Kinlaw Ward of Raleigh, George Dwayne Ward of Centerville, Va., and Charles Kevin House of Wilmington; three daughters, Bebe “Jane” Ward Jordan of Jarvisburg, Sandra Ward Perry of Benson, and Iris Danise Britt of Wilmington; 11 grandchldren, and eight great-grandchldren; two sisters, LaRue Ward Williamson, and Leola Ward Formyduval, both of Whiteville.

BULLOCK

FAIR BLUFF -- Marcus Berry Bullock, 25, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare System.

Final rites were held on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Butler Branch Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald Alford officiating. Burial followed in the Butler Branch Community Cemetery, Fair Bluff. S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Lola Denise Gore Bullock of the home; his father, Owen Berry Bullock Jr. of the home; two brothers, Cory Lomont Bullock of the home, and Owen Berry Bullock III, both of the home; grandparents, Alberta Bullock of Fair Bluff, Owen Berry Bullock Sr. of Fair Bluff, Ella Mae James of Charlotte, Charles Gore of Chadbourn; and a great-grandmother, Marie Taylor of Charlotte.

KATHRYN BENTON CLONTZ

WILMINGTON -- Kathryn Benton Clontz, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006. She was born Oct. 9, 1919 in Mint Hill, one of 12 children in the Benton family. She was married for 62 years to Gene Clontz, who preceded her in death.

Clontz was a member of Winter Park Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for 35 years. She was a volunteer for many years in the gift shop at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the Hanover Seaside Club. Clontz was a former resident of the Woods at Holly Tree and had spent her last months at The Commons of Brightmore.

A graveside service was held Monday, Nov. 6, at Oleander Memorial Gardens, Wilmington. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home of Wilmington handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her daughters, Kaye Buchter of Whiteville, and Maria Hall of Wilmington; three granddaughters and four great-granddaughters.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Maria Hall, 1414 Country Club Road, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Whiteville Lions Club, 110 Hemlock Drive, Whiteville, N.C. 28472.

RAYMOND LEE
HAMMON

WHITEVILLE -- Raymond Lee Hammon, 66, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was owner of a janitorial service, and a United States Army veteran.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the Peoples Funeral Chapel in Whiteville. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Merry C. Hammon; three daughters, Carey Schutte of Texas, Darcy Hammon and Debbie Hammon, both of Arizona; two sons, Dan Hammon of Arizona and Raymond Hammon Jr. of California; a stepdaughter, Gail Hammon of the home; three sisters, Ann Tammen of Minnesota, Dorothy Purselli of Texas, and Vicky Hammon of Arizona; two brothers, Jimmy Hammon of Arizona and Ricky Hammon of Whiteville.

GERALD WAYNE
FOWLER

TABOR CITY -- Gerald Wayne Fowler, 66, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006 in his home in Newport. He is the son of the late John Pink Fowler and Bertha Mae Norris Fowler. He is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Ann Campbell Fowler. He was a United States Army veteran.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7 at the Inman Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Kenny Fowler of Cary, and Duane Fowler of Oak Park, Calif.; a daughter, Melinda Fowler of Trabuco Canyon, Calif.; three brothers, Ervin Fowler of White Pine, Tenn., Keith Fowler of Morehead City, and Kent Fowler of Tabor City; a sister, Lois Fowler of Atlantic Beach; and a granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, J.P. and Dale Fowler.

Visitation will be Monday (tonight) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

ODIE ETHERIDGE
LONG

CRUSOE ISLAND -- Odie Geneva Long, 86, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born Nov. 2, 1920 in Columbus, the daughter of the late Harvey Etheridge and Lawrence Long Etheridge. She was the widow of Thomas M. Long.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, at Magnolia Baptist Church by the Reverends Olease Boyd and Irvin Etheridge. Interment will be in the Etheridge Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Smith and Teresa Etheridge of Crusoe Island; two sons, Jesse Long and Rev. Leroy Long, both of Crusoe Island; two brothers, Thomas Etheridge and Elmer Etheridge. both of Crusoe Island; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchldren, and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Ruby Long and Ilda Sarvis; brothers, Roscoe, Henry, and Rowe Etheridge; and a great-grandson.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7 at the funeral home.

EUGENIA W. GOODEN

ELIZABETHTOWN -- Eugenia W. Gooden, 86, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown. She was born in Columbus County.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, at Wesley’s Chapel Methodist Church in Elizabethtown. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Kent Gooden of Elizabethtown; and two daughters, Jeannie Upton of Charlotte, and Kay Morgan of Wrightsville Beach; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Nov. 7 from 6-8 p.m. and at other times at the family home.

LIONEL S. ‘L.S.’ BENTON

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Lionel S. “L.S.” Benton, 83, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006. He was born in Cerro Gordo a son of the late Hallie Timothy and Nana Purvis Benton. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruby Lee Benton, and a son, Ronald Dale “Ronnie” Benton.

He was president and general manager of Benton Farms, and a member of the Central Baptist Church and the Harper Bible Class.
Benton was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army. He service more than 25 years in the Army Nathional Guard.

Final rites were held on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Timothy Coker. Burial followed in the Grove Hill Cemetery with military honors. Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington, S.C. handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Lionel E. Benton and Mike T. Benton, both of Darlington, S.C., a daughter, Sandra Watford of Florence, S.C.; a brother, Wayne G. Benton of North Carolina; two sisters, Geraldine Connor of Fair Bluff, Margaret Jones of Spartanburg, S.C.; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchldren.

WALKER

HALLSBORO -- Lauranetta George Walker, 59, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a secretary.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, at Peoples Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ronald Campbell officiating. Cremation will follow. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Booker T. Walker; and a brother, Cleveland “Bernard” Campbell of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Tuesday, Nov. 7 from noon until 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until time of the service.

GEORGE CARROLL

COUNCIL -- George Carroll died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown.

Final rites will be announced later by Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Survivors include two daughters, Geneva Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Gladys Carroll of Decatur, Ga.; two sons, Dossie Carroll of the home, and George W. Carroll of Brooklyn, N.Y.

ALLENE LONG SELLERS

WHITEVILLE -- Allene Long Sellers, 83 died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the widow of Alton Sellers and the daughter of the late John Elbert and Josie Carroll Long

Final rites will be held 2 p.M. Monday, Nov. 6, at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn with the Reverends Roger Coffey and Ronald Campbell officiating. Entombment will follow in Columbus Memorial Park Mausoleum, Whiteville.

Survivors include three daughters, Dalma S. Collins of Whiteville, Merle Lightsey of Conway, S.C., and Faye Etheridge of Whiteville; a son, Larry “Buddy” Sellers of Whiteville; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

CHADBOURN -- James Leon Merritt final rites will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Chadbourn with the Dr. Jerry Ganus officiating. Burial will follow in Belvue Cemetery. D&A Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Annie Mae Merritt; his father, Henry David Faulk; two brothers, Henry Merritt and Connell Faulk; five sisters, Mary Ann Burns, Evelyn Tart, Teresa Merritt, Seanti Faulk, Tiffany Faulk; and grandmother, Everlene Faulk.

HOLTON LARRY SOLES

CERRO GORDO -- Holton Larry Soles, 5-month-old infant son of Tabitha Smith Gore and Kelly Devon Soles, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Fayetteville.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.

In addition to his parents he is survived by a brother, William Casey Smith of the home; sister, Stacey “C.J.” Smith of the home; paternal grandparents, Larry Ray and Geneva Ruth Suggs of Chadbourn; maternal grandparents, W.C. and Shirley Sarvis Smith of Nakina; maternal great-grandparents, Wendell Clyde and Erma Ruth Lee Smith of Nakina.

WILLIS W. MAHONEY

WHITEVILLE -- Willis W. Mahoney, 45, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, in an automobile accident near Whiteville.
