OBITUARIES

WILLIS W. MAHONEY

WHITEVILLE -- Willis W. Mahoney, 46, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, in an automobile accident near Whiteville. He was employed at Columbus Regional Healthcare and was a United States Army veteran.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Brunswick-Waccamaw Association building by the Vice Bishop Fredrick Murray. Burial will follow in the Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene C. Mahoney; three sons, Willis W. Mahoney Jr., Sprandon Mahoney, and Shiquan Mahoney, all of the home; his father, Willie D. Mahoney of Whiteville; a sister, Jacqueline Mahoney of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers, Major Mahoney of Atlanta, Ga., and Glendale Mahoney of Raleigh; and his maternal grandmother, Memory Brown of Chadbourn.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Friday from noon until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 until 11 a.m. Viewing will be at the association building Saturday following the service.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Annie Mae Chestnut, 405 Midway Road, Whiteville.

ARTIS LEVI CLIFTON

WHITE OAK -- Artis Levi Clifton, 85, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, at Bladen County Hospital.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, Nov. 8, at Live Oak Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Tim Reeves officiating. Kinlaw Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Ethel Janice Clifton of Whiteville.

CLEO WILLIAMS
NICHOLSON HOBBS

GRAHAM -- Cleo Williams Nicholson Hobbs died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006 at her residence.

A native of Lauderdale, Miss., she was the wife of the late A.B. Nicholson and Otis Hobbs and the daughter of the late Frank W. Williams and Lillie Myrtle Byars Williams. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Billie Hancock and Pearl Pender.

She retired from the Columbus County School System, and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Final rites were conducted Thursday, Nov. 9, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Burlington. Burial followed in the Mausoleum at Alamance Memorial Park. Rich & Thompson Funeral Home of Burlington handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a stepson, James E. Hobbs of Mebane; a stepdaughter, Helen Hobbs Moorehatch of Flint, Mich.; a sister, Shirley W. Love of Burlington; seven step-grandchldren; five step-great-grandchlidren, and five step-great-great-grandchildren.

HARRELSON ‘RED’ McPHERSON

LAURINBURG -- Harrelson “Red” McPherson passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006 at the age of 69.

He was born April 27, 1937 in Sampson County, son of the late Lula McPherson Carlisle. He worked as a truck driver retiringf rom Fleetwood Homes. He loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Northview Harvest Ministries. Red was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Northview Harvest Ministries officiated by the Reverends Kenneth Blease and John McPherson. Burial will follow at Scotland Cemetery. Richard Boles Funeral Service of Laurinburg is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Johnnie Lee Jones McPherson of the home; two sons, Douglas “Doug” McPherson and wife Betty of Laurinburg, Rev. John Eric McPherson and wife Vickie of Chadbourn; a brother, Robert Carlisle and wife Sadie of Greenville, S.C.; four grandchildren, Erica Bryant, Douglas A. McPherson, Faith Todd McPherson, and Amy M. Bullard; three great-grandchildreh, Christian Bryant, Jonathan Todd McPherson, and Robert C. Bullard.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday (tonight) at the funeral home.

BETTIE JO GULLEY- SANDERS

WILMINGTON -- Bettie Jo Gulley-Sanders, 60, formerly of Bolton, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was a nurse’s aide.

Final rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at Peoples Funeral Home Chapel in Whiteville with Minister Richard Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwell Cemetery #2 in Bolton. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three daughters, Tearease Sanders, Rosie Tiffany Dixon, and Tammar Latrice Dixon of the home; two sisters, Ollie M. Gulley of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mazie Sanders of South Ozone Park, N.Y.; and a brother, Eddie Gulley of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Saturday fromnoon until 7 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. until time of the service.

There will be a wake Saturday from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

HOLTON LARRY SOLES

CERRO GORDO -- Holton Larry Soles, five-month-old infant son of Tabitha Smith Gore and Kelly Devon Soles, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville.

A graveside serice will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Strickland Cemetery, Cerro Gordo with the Rev. Paul Page officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

In addition to his parents he is survived by a brother, William Casey Smith of the home; a sister, Stacey “C.J.” Smith of the home; paternal grandparents, Larry Ray and Geneva Ruth Soles of Chadbourn; maternal grandparents, W.C. and Shirley Sarvis Smith of Nakina; maternal great-grandparents, Wendell Clyde, and Erma Ruth Lee Smith of Nakina.

GEORGE CARROLL

COUNCIL -- George Carroll, 93, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2006, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Carvers Creek A.M.E. Zion Church. Burial will follow in Carvers Creek Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Dossie Carroll of the home, and George “G.W.” Carroll of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Geneva Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Gladys Carroll of Decatur, Ga.

Viewing will be from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home Thursday (tonight), and one hour prior to the service at the church.

TROY D. STEWART

ELIZABETHTOWN -- Troy D. Stewart, 78, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Pamela Mae Stewart; two brothers, Delbert Stewart and Adolph Stewart; and a sister, Helen White.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at White Oak Church of God of Prophecy, White Oak with the Reverends Randy Locklear and Mackie Walters officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Stewart of the home; a son, Reuben Stewart of Elizabethtown; three daughters, Brenda McMillan, Amory, Miss., Debra Dickens of Sneaks, Fla., and Anita Mercer of Delliwood, Fla.; two sisters, Ruby Shirley of Parkton, and Kay Tatum of Fayetteville; nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

ANDREW ‘BO’ CLARIDY

WHITEVILLE -- Andrew “Bo” Claridy, 49, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2006, at his residence.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at Springhill Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Springhill Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a sister, Sandra C. Bobbett of Bladenboro; a brother, Morris Claridy, of Bladenboro; two stepsisters, Mary Lee Baldwin of Hallsboro, and Mildred Jackson of Whiteville.

Viewing will be on Saturday, Nov. 11 from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the services at the church.

HATTIE GASKINS

WHITEVILLE -- Hattie Gaskins, 85, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at her residence.

Arrangments will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.
