ECHS takes Waccamaw
JV crown

Despite a 24-22 loss to Trask in its final game last Thursday, the East Columbus High School junior varsity football team has emerged as Waccamaw Conference JV champion. The Baby Gators finished with a 6-1 conference record and an 8-2 season record. Their only other loss came against Fairmont in overtime.

Wilcox watch

Through the first four games of the 2006-07 NBA season, former Whiteville High star Chris Wilcox is averaging 11.2 points and 8 rebounds as the starting power forward for the Seattle SuperSonics. The Sonics took a 1-3 record into Wednesday night’s game at Orlando. Wilcox recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in the Sonics’ Nov. 3 loss to the L.A. Lakers. Wilcox is in his fifth season in the NBA after being a 2002 first-round pick by the L.A. Clippers out of the University of Maryland.

Whiteville recreation
basketball registrations

Registrations are now underway for the 2007 Whiteville Youth Basketball League. The league is open to boys and girls of ages 5-12. League play will begin in January. Registration fee is $5 for city residents and $15 for non-city residents. Sign-ups for cheerleading is also underway with the above ages and registration fees applying. Behind a four-touchdown performance by junior back Patrick Lennon, the Whiteville Wolfpack cops the East Waccamaw 2A Conference football championship with a 47-26 victory over visiting Tabor City. The Wolfpack of first-year head coach Bill Hewett goes on to finish runnerup in the state, bowing to Forest Hills 13-6 in the state 2A championship game at Marshville.
