Feds’ meddling
in school testing
not needed

A move is afoot by the federal government to get more involved in school testing.

We believe that job is better left to individual states to determine the level of testing needed.

The push is the result of the failed No Child Left Behind program. The problem, some in the federal education bureaucracy believe, is that states have varying degrees of proficiency, some of which seem to be conflicting.

Granted, end-of-grade testing is needed to see how schools are performing, but that’s better left to individual states.

What’s appropriate for California, for example, isn’t necessarily appropriate for North Carolina.
Over time, control of education has been moved from communities, to counties, to states – and now the federal government.

We fear this move to federalize education will do more harm than good to improve education standards.
