Wolfpack trips Trask 40-6
to put league record at 4-0

By DAN BISER

ROCKY POINT – Tyson Wilcox’s first-quarter touchdown runs of 9 and 71 yards set the tone for the Whiteville Wolfpack Friday in a 40-6 Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference football victory over the host Trask Titans.

Whiteville, which claimed the victory during Trask’s homecoming night, improved to 4-0 in conference play and 7-2 for the season as it rolled up 436 yards of total offense.

Coach Mark Little’s Wolfpack had to contend with a gutty offensive effort by Trask during the first half as the Titans put together a strong second-quarter scoring drive and had another first-half scoring opportunity shot down when the Wolfpack’s Dequan Gaddy came up with a big pass interception at the WHS two-yard line.

Quarterback Harrison Jordan had his best passing night of the season, complete six of eight attempts for 145 yards, including touchdown passes of 42 and 17 yards to Alex Royal and Charlie Gore respectively.

Jarrod McKinney scored his 15th touchdown on the season on a 10-yard run and Kevin Gamble added a one-yard scoring run.

Gamble and John McZeak led the WHS defense as they combined for 19 tackles from the linebacker positions.

Trask’s Justin Bland, who was crowned THS Homecoming King during halftime ceremonies, scored the lone Titan TD on a one-yard run in the second quarter. The loss dropped the Titans to 0-3 in the conference and 2-6 overall.

“There were several encouraging things about tonight’s game,” Little said. “We balanced things out well on offense tonight, probably throwing the ball the best we have all season. We also didn’t commit a turnover and that’s the first time that has happened this season as far as I know.

“Trask moved the football well on us the first half but we came up with some big stops when we needed to. It was a good effort and we need to keep things positive going into next week’s open date. We have two really big games (North Brunswick and South Columbus) after that.”

Wilcox’s first touchdown came from nine yards out with three minutes gone in the game. His 71-yard TD scamper came on the final play of the first quarter. David Hodgson kicked both extra points for a 14-0 lead.

Whiteville increased its lead with 3:24 left in the first half when Gamble slammed over from the one-yard line.

Trask responded moments later when Bland ran a quarterback sneak with 1:46 remaining in the half, but Whiteville quickly answered with Jordan’s 42-yard scoring pass to Royal with 1:05 remaining for a 27-6 halftime lead.

McZeak recovered a Titan fumble on the second play of the second half and McKinney scored from 10 yards out. Hodgson’s kick made the score 33-7.

Jordan threw to Gore for 17 yards and the final touchdown with 2:41 left in the third quarter.

Wilcox carried nine times for 130 yards.

McKinney rushed for 68 yards on 11 carries to run his season yardage total to 914. The last WHS player to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in regular-season play was McKinney’s brother Brushawn, who rushed for more than 1,300 yards in 1999.
