State-ranked Eagles thump W. Columbus

CERRO GORDO – The West Columbus Vikings absorbed their seventh straight loss Friday night, falling to the unbeaten East Bladen Eagles 45-7 in a Southeastern 1A-2A Conference football game.

East Bladen, which has been ranked fifth among state 1A teams for several weeks, moved its season record to 8-0, including 4-0 in the Southeastern Conference.

Coach Lenon Fisher’s Eagles, which built a 21-0 halftime lead, was led by the running of Donovan Richardson, who had 140 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. East Bladen, which claimed its seventh straight win over the Vikings, scored 24 points in the third quarter while West Columbus got its only points in the fourth quarter on a four-yard run by Travis Leggett. Dylan Floyd kicked the extra point.

The loss dropped the Viking record to 1-7, including 0-3 in the conference.

Richardson scored the only points of the first quarter when his 14-yard run gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

In the second quarter, quarterback Dom Whittington scored on a 13-yard scamper and Mitchell Johnson picked up a fumble and returned it 19 yards for another TD and a 21-0 halftime lead.

A seven-yard run by Mike Smith, a 52-yard pass from Whittington to Anthony Autry, a 28-yard field goal by Tripp Lancaster and 19-yard run by Devin Allen supplied the East Bladen scoring in the third quarter.

Kenyarta Smith carried four times for 56 yards and Leggett had 48 yards on 11 carries for West Columbus.

In East Bladen’s four conference games to date, the Eagles have outscored their opponents by a total of 184 to 28,

Coach Vernon Brigman’s West Columbus squad will travel to play South Robeson Friday.

East Bladen will play host to Fairmont Friday in a game that is expected to decide the Southeastern Conference championship.
