Governor, congressman to stump here Monday

By JEFFERSON WEAVER

Gov. Mike Easley and 7th District U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre will visit Columbus County Monday to support several local incumbent Democrats.

Easley is scheduled to attend a social for District Attorney Rex Gore at “Bumminhole Lodge” on Home Harrelson Road from 6-7 p.m.

Easley and McIntyre will also attend a “Get Out The Vote” dinner at the Columbus County Fairgrounds at 7 p.m.

The governor and congressman are attending the events to show support for Gore, Sen. R.C. Soles, and Rep. Dewey Hill, as well as local candidates.

An incumbent for four terms, Gore has faced not one but two challenges for the prosecutor’s post in the 13th Judicial District this year.

Gore defeated Democrat challenger A.J. Prease for the Democratic nomination in the May primary. Gore will now face Republican Jon David of Leland for the district attorney’s post.

Soles faces Republican William Fairley for the District 8 state senate seat in the general election. Republican Raymond Carl Gilbert is challenging incumbent Dewey Hill for the District 20 state house seat.

McIntyre is being challenged by Clinton businesswoman Shirley Davis, a Republican.

Both the social and the rally are free.
