| Pack has football open date; Friday night soccer set By DAN BISER With a perfect 4-0 record in Waccamaw 1A-2A play and a 7-2 season mark, the Whiteville High football team has an open date this week before heading into its final two conference games with North Brunswick and South Columbus. Wolfpack head coach Mark Little is hoping more positive things come out of this week’s open date than they did last year. Last fall, Whiteville carried an 8-0 record into its open date, but it then came back with losses to North Brunswick (26-17) and South Columbus (28-9). In two weeks, the Wolfpack went from being the only unbeaten 2A team in the state to a third-place conference finish. “We planning to get as much as we can with the off week,” said Little, whose Wolfpack posted a 40-6 road victory over Heide Trask last week. “There are plenty of things we need to improve on if we expect to have a say in the conference championship. The final two games of the regular season will be crucial.” When the Whiteville takes its homefield against North Brunswick on Oct. 27, the Wolfpack will be vying for Little’s 40th victory in his five years as WHS head coach. Whiteville has not won a conference football championship since 1993. And while the football team will be idle, there will be another type of football going on Friday night at Legion Stadium as the Wolfpack soccer team will be playing host to longtime intra-city rival Waccamaw Academy at 7. Coach Mike Buckpitt’s WHS soccer squad is vying for a state 2A playoff berth as it carried a 10-5-1 record into Wednesday night’s conference match with South Brunswick. |
