DOTTIE McKEITHAN WRIGHT

NAKINA -- Dottie McKeithan Wright, 89, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Fletcher N. and Donnie Ganus McKeithan of Brunswick County. 

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2 at Columbus Memorial Park in Whiteville with the Rev. Glen Lane officiating. Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn is handling arrangements.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.  

 

LOUISE NOBLES MOORE

WILMINGTON -- Louise Nobles Moore left this world to be with Jesus on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006. Born Aug. 19, 1927 in Cerro Gordo she was preceded in death by her parents, Lee Roy Nobles and Jetty Stone Nobles; stepmother, Gertrude Stone Nobles; sisters, Annie Sue Nobles Morgan and Gertrude Nobles; husband, Harry Moore; sons, Walter Lee Moore Sr. and Harry Michael Moore; stepbrothers, Willie, Clarence and Joe Stone.

She is survived by a daughter, Doris Moore Rodgers (Don); sons, Larry Ray Moore (Libby), and Gary Wayne Moore, Sr. (Kimmie); daughter-in-law Barbara J. Moore; grandchildren, Walter Lee Moore Jr., Harriette Rodgers Jarrell, Jerry Moore, Leslie Moore Layhew, Jason Rodgers, Jennifer Moore Gardner, Gary Moore Jr., Aaron Freeman, Stephanie Dalton and Nicole Maund; great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Jamie Jarrell, Kirsten Layhew and Brodie Maund; sisters, Allie Mae Ward and Cora Lee Harrelson and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Louise’s family was her pride and joy; she loved them with all her heart and soul and never missed an opportunity to tell them about Jesus.  With this same heart filled with love and compassion she ministered to others in need with what ever she could, be it a simple plate of food, a bended ear or through the strength of a hand held.  Whomever she met, there was always a quick smile and the assurance that Jesus loved them.

Mom, this world is a better place for you having been a part of it.

A graveside service was held at Columbus Memorial Park, Whiteville on Monday, Oct. 2, 2006 Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel of Market St., Wilmington handled the arrangements.

NELLIE ELIZABETH WOODBURN

RIEGELWOOD – Nellie Elizabeth Woodburn, 91, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born on Sept. 13, 1915 to James William and Elizabeth Matthews Lashley.

Woodburn was the oldest member of Delco First Baptist Church, she loved her many friends and family and enjoyed life to its fullest.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Walton A. Woodburn, a infant daughter and a son, Mark Lashley Woodburn, two sisters, Bessie Jessup and Lenna Health.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2 at Delco First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Weyman Cemetery, Riegelwood. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her son, William “Bill” Woodburn and his wife Sharon of Riegelwood; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Marcus Woodburn of Riegelwood; a grandchild, Marcus Woodburn of Riegelwood; a step-grandchild, Andrea Crocker; two step-great-grandchildren, Alex Crocker and Brandon Crocker, all of Riegelwood; and a special niece, Pat Hargrove; several other nieces and nephews.

CLYDE M. McPHERSON

CHADBOURN – Clyde M. McPherson, 89, of the Beaverdam community, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006 at her home. She is preceded death by her parents, Jim and Nizie Garrell McPherson and her husband, Carson McPherson.

Final rites will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2 at Beaverdam Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the McPherson Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Marvin and Ervin McPherson, both of Chadbourn; three daughters, Margaret Evans of Delco, Jeanette Cribb of Whiteville, and Shirley Hilburn of Monroe; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grand-children.

 

ROY LEE McKOY

WHITEVILLE – Roy Lee McKoy, 55, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3 at St. Thomas AME Zion Church, Hwy. 53, White Oak with the Reverends Corenia Shaw and Harrison Branch officiating. Burial will follow in the Mitchellfield Cemetery, Clarkton. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Rev. Annette McKoy of the home, a daughter, Sonya McKoy; a son, Rodney McKoy; two sisters, Cecelia Washington, and Annie McDowell; and a brother, Amous McKoy.

Viewing will be on Monday, Oct. 2 from 2-8 p.m., the family will receive friends and family from 6-8 p.m. in the Union Funeral Home Chapel.

RODNEY CECIL THOMPSON

WHITEVILLE – Rodney Cecil Thompson, 78, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 at Shoreland HealthCare & Retirement Center in Whiteville. He was the son of the late Robert Cecil Thompson and Wilma Marcelle Harrelson.

Thompson was a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church in Whiteville. He was a lab tech at Federal Paper Company for 37 years. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and received two Purple Hearts.

Final rites were held Monday, Oct. 2 at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church in Whiteville with the Reverends Elmore Strickland and David Todd officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Audra Fay Durden of Elkin; a son, Ronald S. Thompson of Whiteville; a brother, Sidney U. Thompson of Whiteville; a sister, Jenifer Kaye Thompson of Durham; two grandchildren, Ronald Andrew Harrison and Felicia Rachael Harrison, both of Elkin; a former wife, Alice Faye Brubaker of Ephrata, Pa., a niece, Patricia Marie Thompson of Whiteville; a nephew, Douglas U. Thompson of Whiteville; and a great-niece, Deanna Thompson of Whiteville.

Active pallbearers were Huston White, Delane Stephens, David Gore, Barry McQueen, Bobby Ezzell, Bobby Fore, and Charles Gore.

 

BARBARA J. SINGLETARY

BLADENBORO – Barbara J. Singletary, 68, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2 at First Baptist Church in Bladenboro by the Rev. Gregory Taylor. Burial will follow in the Kelly Cemetery, Bladenboro. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, William Singletary; a daughter, Barbarette F. Singletary of Bladenboro; four sons, William R. Singletary of Waldorf, Md., Michael R. Singletary of Fayetteville, Demetrius S. Singletary of Raeford, and Bryant K. Singletary of Lakeland, Fla.; and a sister, Carrie Love Smith of Bladenboro.

Viewing will be at the church Monday from 1-2 p.m., and there will be no viewing after the service.

 

LORETTA SWINDELL

ELIZABETHTOWN – Loretta Swindell, 56, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Savannah Temple AME Zion Church in Clarkton. Burial will follow in the McKeithan Cemetery in Clarkton. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handing the arrangements.

Survivors include four daughters, Travella Ann Swindell, Tracy Ross, and Laterra Ross, all of Elizabethtown, and Shameda Ross of Fort Lynnwood, Mich.; three sons, Lawrence Kendrick Swindell, Antwan Cromartie, and LaKendrick Ross, all of Elizabethtown; three sisters, Revell Ross and Ramona Monroe, both of Clarkton, and Gloria Andrews of Council; three brothers, McKenzie Purcell Ross and Anthony Ross, both of Elizabethtown, and Chris Ross of Fayetteville.

Viewing will be at the funeral home Monday, Oct. 2 from noon until 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. and again following the service.

 

THELMA SMITH PRIDGEN

WHITEVILLE – Thelma Smith Pridgen, 86, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006. She was born April 7, 1920 in Lincoln County, the daughter of the late Thomas Lester and Bertha Rebecca Smith. She was the widow of Ernest Dixon Pridgen. She was an avid gardener.

Final rites were held Saturday, Sept. 30 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by Dr. Dave Heller. Interment followed in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Survivors include four daughters, Gwendolyn Larson of Wilmington, Rebecca Livingston of Columbus, Miss. and Whiteville, Sharlene Pridgen of Carolina Beach, and Laura Duncan of Whiteville; seven sons, Lester Pridgen, Linwood Pridgen, Randy Pridgen, and Michael Pridgen, all of Whiteville, Paul Pridgen of Lake Waccamaw, Rudolph Pridgen of Lake Waccamaw, and David Pridgen of White Lake; a brother, Hugh Smith of Kings Mountain; a sister, Winnie Sue Perry of Lumberton; 16 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Gail Pridgen; and two grandchildren.

 

LESSIE LOYA BIVEN

WHITE OAK – Lessie Loya Biven, 66, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Oct. 1 at Bladen Funeral Home Chapel in Elizabethtown. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, Nolan Biven; and a sister, Marian Black.

 

JESSIE LEE KING

SMYRNA, Ga. – Jessie Lee King, 80, formerly of Fair Bluff, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 in Austell, Ga.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

 

LENA P. YOUNG

RIEGELWOOD – Lena P. Young, 89, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006 at the Brunswick Cove. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Graham Chapel AME Zion Church by Bishop Odell Fulton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Berthalene Smith of Riegelwood; and a son, Albert Young of Bridgewater, N.J.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Monday, Oct. 2 from noon until 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 until 11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday from noon until 1 p.m., and there will be no view after the service.
