Viking upset bid

CERRO GORDO - Homecoming Night at West Columbus ended in a fifth straight defeat for the Viking football team Friday as it bowed to the visiting Fairmont Golden Tornadoes 24-13.

West Columbus, playing its 2006 conference opener, overcame a 12-0 halftime deficit to take a 13-12 lead behind the running and passing of standout junior back Travis Leggett. However, behind the power running duo of C.J. Litmon and Ascare Douglas, Fairmont rallied for a pair of touchdowns in the final period to come away with the win.

The victory gave Coach Kim Brown a 2-0 conference record and a 4-1 season mark as the Tornadoes avenged a 21-20 overtime loss to the Vikings last season.

West Columbus, which was coming off an open date, saw its season record drop to 1-5 as the Vikings yielded their lowest single-game point total of the season.

It marked the first time since their 48-25 season-opening victory over Dixon that the Vikings held an opponent below the 40-point barrier.

Leggett broke loose for a 76-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Dylan Floyd’s extra point kick made the score 7-6. In the fourth quarter, Leggett connected with Courtney Hayes on a 15-yard scoring pass to give Coach Vernon Brigman’s WCHS squad its short-lived 13-12 lead. A two-point conversion try failed.

But Fairmont rallied on a 15-yard TD run by Litmon and 26-yard scoring scamper by Douglas to gain the win.

The Tornadoes had gained a 12-0 first-quarter lead on a five-yard run by Douglas and a two-yard run by Litmon.

Litmon finished the night with 128 yards on 28 carries while Douglas carried 20 times for 127 yards. Leggett rushed for 105 yards on 19 carries and completed three passes for 65 yards.

The loss marked the Vikings’ first Homecoming setback since the 2001 season.

During halftime ceremonies, senior Megan Inman was crowned 2006 WCHS Homecoming queen. She is the daughter of Billy and Denise Inman.

West Columbus will travel to play Red Springs Friday.
