S. Columbus, Whiteville bow out of 2A dual team tennis playoffs

Waccamaw Conference champion South Columbus and runnerup Whiteville each suffered opening round losses Wednesday in girls state 2A dual team tennis playoffs.

South Columbus, which registered a 12-0 record in regular-season play bowed to visiting Croatan 6-3, and Whiteville traveled to Fairmont where it lost to the Southeastern Conference champion Lady Tornadoes 6-1.

It marked the second straight year that the conference champion SCHS squad has fallen to an East Central Conference member in first-round play. It was also the second straight year that Whiteville has fallen to Fairmont in the opening round.

Croatan won all three doubles matches to pull away to their win over the Lady Stallions.
Whiteville. played without regulars Katie Bastug and Lindsay Batten.

Both matches had been postponed by rain on Tuesday.
