Stallions to make journey to Heide Trask

By DAN BISER

It’s business as usual for the South Columbus Stallions.

As has generally been the case this time of the season, the Stallions are rolling along with an undefeated conference football record with their eyes set on another league title.

On Friday the Stallions, now 4-0 and tied with Whiteville for the Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference lead, will travel to Rocky Point to take on the Heide Trask Titans, who are still looking for their first conference win. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

A win by the South Columbus and a win by Whiteville over North Brunswick on Friday would put up a classic battle for the Waccamaw Conference championship in the final regular-season game on Nov. 3 at South Columbus.

South Columbus has a 7-2 season record following last week’s 48-12 homecoming shellacking of South Brunswick. Trask is 2-7, including losses in its last six games.

“We haven’t played particularly well in our away games this season,” said veteran SCHS head coach Joey Price. “We need to come away with a good effort against Trask. They are not a bad team. They run the football well and have some good athletes in their backfield.”

South Columbus defeated Trask 32-0 last year in the first football meeting between the two schools.

Price was pleased with the Stallions’ effort last week against South Brunswick as they scored on their first five possession to take a 35-6 halftime lead.

“We got to play a lot of people and everybody gave a good effort,” Price said. “It was the type football we need to playing this time of year with the conference championship at stake and the playoffs approaching.”

Trask fell to North Brunswick 32-28 last Friday at Leland after holding the lead for most of the way.

Dakota Piver, Andrae Jacobs and James Vereen lead a strong running attack for the Stallions while Michael Hewett and Justin Duncan form and effective quarterback rotation.

South Columbus, which has lost only two Waccamaw Conference games since the start of the 1998 season, suffered its only two losses this season to non-conference opponents East Bladen (42-7) and Wallace-Rose Hill (20-6). East Bladen and Wallace-Rose Hill remain undefeated and ranked among the state’s top five 1A teams.
