Waccamaw Conference football championship

Stallion-Wolfpack
showdown set

By DAN BISER

It has become “old-hat” for the South Columbus High football team to head into the final week of regular-season play without a conference loss.

For the Whiteville High football team, this season marks the first time that has happened since 1992.

A game that has been anticipated since the start of the season will unfold Friday night when Coach Joey Price’s Stallions play host to Coach Mark Little’s Whiteville Wolfpack for the outright Waccamaw Conference football championship as well as the conference’s top berth in the state 2A playoffs. Both teams have 5-0 conference records and 8-2 overall marks. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

South Columbus has beaten the Wolfpack in each of the last 11 seasons, including a 28-9 victory last year at Whiteville. The Stallions have won eight of the last 10 conference championships and have not a lost a conference game on their homefield since 1995.

Whiteville is battling for its first outright conference championship since 1992 when Price was an assistant coach under Brian Aldridge at Whiteville.

A huge crowd is anticipated for Friday at South Columbus’ Civitan Stadium.

“This is what it is all about,” said Coach Price, who is now in his 10th season as SCHS head coach. “Whiteville has had a very strong season. They have a lot of speed and strength. They are a tough team to prepare for.”

Coach Little said that there are few programs in this area of the state that have shown the consistency that South Columbus has over the past decade.

“They have a lot of pride and tradition in their program,” Little said. “Their record speaks for itself. We’ll have to be at our very best to do well against them this season. You can’t make mistakes against them. They are capable of coming out strong and scoring a lot of points early.”

Whiteville and South Columbus both showed no hesitation in proceeding with their games this past Friday, despite the unfavorable weather conditions, as neither wanted to have to prepare to play this Friday after a game on Monday.

“We really didn’t consider the option of postponing it,” said Little, whose Wolfpack took a 14-6 victory over visiting North Brunswick Friday. “

Price said that Trask was as willing as South Columbus was to play Friday on the Trask field. South Columbus won 28-8.

“Trask really wanted to play Friday because they have a game this Friday (at East Columbus) that will put them in the 1A playoffs if they win,” Price said.
