past Trask 28-8

ROCKY POINT – Despite a muddy field and continuous rain, the South Columbus Stallions easily controlled the football and scoreboard Friday night in taking a 28-8 Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference victory over the host Heide Trask Titans.

The Stallion offense rolled up 307 yards of total offense in putting their conference record at 5-0. South Columbus, 8-2 for the season, will play host to Whiteville Friday night in a regular-season ending, head-to-head battle for the Waccamaw title (see related story).

“I think our kids were kind of excited about playing in the rain,” Price said. “We did a good job of moving the football and playing pretty consistently on defense. I’m glad we were able to go ahead and play it despite the field conditions.”

Junior fullback Andrae Jacobs plowed his way to three touchdowns and James Vereen added the other. The Stallion defense held Trask to 96 total yards as the Titans fell to 0-5 in conference and 2-7 overall.

Coach Joey Price’s South Columbus squad took an 8-0 lead with just under eight minutes left in the first quarter on two-yard run by Jacobs. Quarterback Michael Hewett passed to tight end Mark Alan Wright for a two-point conversion and 8-0 lead.

In the opening minute of the second quarter, Vereen scored on a four-yard run. The third Stallion score came with just under three minutes left in the first half on another two-yard run by Jacobs for a 20-0 halftime lead.

The only score of the third quarter came on a four-yard run by Jacobs. Dakota Piver ran the two-point conversion.

Trask got its lone touchdown early in the fourth-quarter on an eight-yard ramble by Lorenzo Armstrong. Michael Malloy kicked the extra point.

South Columbus attempted only three passes, and completed only one … an eight-yarder from Michael Hewett to Buster James. Trask did not complete a pass in eight attempts.

Justin Bland was the Titans’ leading rusher with 45 yards on five carries.

Trask will close regular-season play this Friday at East Columbus.

South Columbus is vying for its third straight conference championship and its ninth in 11 years. The Stallions have lost only one conference game since the 2000 season.
