OBITUARIES

WILLIE E. GREENE

WHITEVILLE – Willie E. Greene, 81, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. Greene retired as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a Mason, Shriner, and deacon.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12 at First St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Andy Anderson. Burial, with full military honors and Masonic rites, will follow at the Campground Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine J. Greene; three daughters, Crystal Greene of the home, Willie Mae Greene Blue of Atlanta, Ga., and Tarena Jones of Costa Mesa, Calif.; two sons, Billie J. Greene of Newark, N.J., and Derral A. Greene of Whiteville; a sister, Edith M. Price of Whiteville; a brother, Phillip D. Greene of Columbia, S.C.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Monday, Sept. 11 from noon to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. and again following the service.

There will be a wake Monday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home, at which time fraternal rites will be performed.

EVA V. RANDALL

CHADBOURN – Eva Viola Randall, 83, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2006 at her residence. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held Wednesday, Sept. 13 at First Baptist Church in Clarendon by the Rev. William Nesbitt. Burial will follow in the Todd Cemetery #2 in Clarendon. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Vontine Randall of the home, an Carletha Randall of High Point; a son, Thurman Randall of Columbia, S.C.; three sisters, Martha Session and Linnie Keel of Chadbourn, and Opa Randall of Newark, N.J.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. and again following the service.

BOBBY GREGGS

LORIS, S.C. – Bobby Greggs, 62, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital.

Final rites rites will be held Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. at Bristol Creek Baptist Church in the Dothan community of Tabor City. Burial will follow in Flag Patch Cemetery, Loris, S.C. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Ree; children, Stephen, Yolanda, Sophia, Regina, and Francesca Greggs; and three sisters.

Visitation will be held Monday (tonight) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

FLOYD PAUL PAIT

BLADENBORO – Floyd Paul Pait, 77, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006 at his residence. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Army.

Final rites were held Saturday, Sept. 9 at Galeed Baptist Church

in Bladenboro with the Reverends Bruce Cannon and Bert Young officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Paula Kinlaw and Alice Smith; two sisters, Ruby Carter and Betty Thompson; and three grandchildren.

DEWITT LEE CURRIE SR.

LAKE WYLIE, S.C. – Dewitt Lee Currie Sr., 78, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006. He was born Jan. 8, 1928 in Columbus County. He was a son of the late Archie and Katie Benton Currie.

Upon graduating from Williams Township High School, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He graduated from Charlotte Business College and began his career as a salesman with Swift & Company and Morton Salt Company. Currie later owned and operated Pineville Superette and Pineville Red & White Supermarket. He was president of C&M Reality Company.

Currie was a Mason for 50 years with Eastgate Lodge of Charlotte. He was a Shriner with Oasis Temple, serving as president of the Red Fez Shrine Club for three terms. He was a renowned Civil War historian.

Currie and his wife, Frances celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in January 2006. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Final rites were held Monday, Sept. 11 at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. M.L. Ford & Son Funeral Home of Charlotte handled the arrangements.

Survivors other than his wife, Frances Todd Currie; a daughter, Donna Currie Garrison of Charlotte; two sons, Dewitt Lee Currie Jr. of York, S.C., and Archie Todd Currie of Goose Creek, S.C.; six grandchildren, and a brother, Edwin Currie of Florence, S.C., and a sister Virginia Anders of Ethel, La.

LLOYD BATTEN

WHITEVILLE – Lloyd Batten, 83, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006 at his residence. He was the son of the late John Wesley Batten and Fannie Worrell Batten of Columbus County. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beth Watson Batten.

After graduating from Hallsboro High School, he was inducted into the United States Army where he served four years with two years over seas during World War II.

After an honorable discharge as sergeant, he worked a while with Hills Ice Cream Company and with Carolina Merchantile Company. Then he formulated his own General Insurance Agency, which he managed and operated for 40 years until he retired.

He served for five years on the Board of Directors of “Carolina’s Insurance Associaiton,” a member of “the Greater Whiteville Chamber of Commerce” where he served on the board and as president. He was presented an Honorary Life Membership of the Chamber. He also served on the board of the Whiteville Downtown Development Commission and remained a member of the Chamber and WDDC until his death.

He was a member of the Whiteville Lions Club for more than 45 years and served in all offices including president. He also served as Deputy District Governor and as a Zone Chairman. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow and was also presented an Honorary Life Membership.

He was a member and a past commander of Whiteville American Legion Post 137 and was post chaplain until his death.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for many years where he was a deacon and elder, sang in the choir and served as Sunday School Superintendent. He later became a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and adult Sunday school teacher. At the time of his death he was a member of Whiteville United Methodist Church.

A memorial service was conducted at Whiteville United Methodist Church on Saturday, Sept. 9 with the Reverends David Benson and Robert Hankins officiating.

He is survived by his wife, Dixie Wilson Duncan Batten of Whiteville; a stepdaughter, Starr Moore of Atlanta, Ga.; two stepsons, Phillip Duncan of Charlotte, and John Duncan of Whiteville; a twin sister, Lois Blakely of Pleasant Gardens, and a sister, Thetus Sessions and husband, Harold of Whiteville; two brothers, Carl Batten and wife, Lois of Whiteville, Paul Batten and wife, Lula of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; five step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Whiteville United Methodist Church, 902 Pinckney Street, Whiteville, N.C. 28472 or Southeastern Community College, P.O. Box 151, Whiteville, N.C. 28472 or a charity of ones choice.

BOBBY GREGGS

LORIS, S.C. – Bobby Greggs, 62, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006 at Loris Community Hospital.

BETTY JEAN MARSH

BLADENBORO – Betty Jean Marsh, 43, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

BERTHA MINSON

CHADBOURN – Bertha Minson, 94, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006 at Premier Living.

Arrangements will be announced by Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville.

BOBBY R. POWELL

WHITEVILLE – Bobby Ray Powell, 70, owner of Quality Cleaners, and a native of the Smyrna community northwest of here, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006, in Duke Hospital.

He returned to Whiteville in 1975 following nearly 21 years service with the U.S. Coast Guard, and worked with his father in the Whiteville Furniture Company before starting the dry cleaning business in 1985.

Powell, a 1955 graduate of Whiteville High School, was an avid golfer and served many years as treasurer of the American Legion Post No. 137 here, and participated for 48 years as a Mason and member of Columbus County’s Lebanon Lodge.

He was a member of the Smyrna Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher and former superintendent of the Sunday school.

Powell was married to his childhood sweetheart Louise Walters for 48 years. His father D.J. “Dunk” Powell preceded him in death.

Final rites will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Smyrna Baptist Church with the Reverends Ted Rideil and David Heller officiating. Burial, with full military honors and Masonic rites, will be in the Union Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Louise; a daughter, Cindy P. Rooks of Whiteville; a son, Greg Powell, of Whiteville; his mother, Lona Bowen Powell of Whiteville; a sister, Margaret Powell Elkins of Whiteville; a brother, Earl Powell of Yadkinville; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be at McKenzie Mortuary from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. (See story, Page 2-A of the printed edition)

BARBARA HAMILTON

WHITEVILLE – Barbara Hamilton, 78, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006 at her home. She was born Dec. 8, 1927 in Collier County, Fla., the daughter of the late Nelson T. and Ellen Demeree Noble. She was the widow of the late James F. Hamilton. She was a loving mother and member of the Whiteville Church of God.

Final rites will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11 at the Whiteville Church of God by the Reverends Russell Kinlaw and Harold Anderson. Interment will follow in the Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

She was the mother of three children, Patricia Clewis and husband, Levie of Whiteville, Marion Baker and husband, David of Cape Cod, Mass., and Franklin Hamilton and wife, Debbie of Whiteville; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Arelene Daniel of Everglades City, Fla.; a brother, Dennis Nobel of Lake Placid, Fla.

Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Jeffery J. Thomas, Michael Clewis and great-grandsons, Jeffery W. Thomas, Jamie Clewis, Justin Feaster and Zackery Thomas.

ROBERT C. SANDERSON

WHITEVILLE -- Robert Channing Sanderson, 20, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006.

Channing was a graduate of West Columbus High School, class of 2004 and was presently a student at Southeastern Community College.

Funeral services will be conduced 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn with the Rev. Randolph Browning officiating. Burial will follow in the Boardman Baptist Church Cemetery, Evergreen. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangement.

He is survived by his mother, Sharon Powers of Garysburg; father, Michael Lyndon Sanderson Sr. of Evergreen; brother, Michael L. Sanderson Jr. of Rowland; paternal grandparents, C.R. “Bobby” and Mary N. Sanderson of Evergreen.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn. (See home page for story)
