WHITEVILLE Victor Carl Soles, 86, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Asa Soles and Grace Gore Soles. He was a veteran of the United States Army.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 8 at Inman Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Watts with entombment in the Gore Cemetery, Tabor City, with full military honors. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
He is survived by two sons, Douglas Soles of Clarendon, and Richard Soles of Rocky Point; three daughters, Meriam Godwin of Clarendon, Linda Ward of Whiteville, and Sue Faulk of Nakina; a brother, Quinn Soles of Columbia, S.C.; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and seven great - great - grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lena Thompson Soles and daughter, Violet Soles Lanier.

CLARENDON Hilda Faye Nealy, 49, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a factory worker.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16 at the First Baptist Church in Clarendon. Burial will follow at Todd Cemetery #2. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Felix Lee Nealy of the home; her father, Robert Lee Nealy of the home; three sisters, Selma Nealy of the home, Wanda Glover of Raleigh, and Shirlene Stanley of Nakina; four brothers, Glenn Nealy of Whiteville, Timothy Nealy of the home, Anthony Nealy of El Paso, Texas, and Lenward Nealy of Philadelphia, Pa.

BLADENBORO Betty Jean Marsh, 43, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. She was a home health aide.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 at the Bolton Church of God in Christ by Supt. Thomas A. Wiggins Jr. Burial will follow in the Sandhill Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Nyesha Marsh of the home; a son, Altaray Marsh of Bladenboro; her mother, Betty Joe Marsh of Bladenboro; a brother, James E. Marsh Jr. of Oakland, Calif.

BLADENBORO Purdie G. Bullard, 90, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.
Final rites were held Wednesday, Sept. 13 at Abbottsburg Baptist Church in Abbottsburg with the Rev. Dewey Jackson officiating. Burial followed in the Bullard Cemetery in Bladenboro. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.
Survivors included two daughters, Polly Cox of Brunswick, Ga., and Janet Marchman of Gray, Ga.; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Letha Bullard; a brother, Gibbs Bullard; a sister, Neal Bowen; and his father and mother, Meban and Jennie Bullard.

CHADBOURN Bertha Gowans Minson, 94, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006 at Premiere Living at Lake Waccamaw. She was a private in-home health caregiver.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, Chadbourn. The Reverends Charles Parker and J.R. Matthews will officiate. Burial will follow in the Mt. Moriah Memorial Gardens. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by a niece, Gwendolyn King of the home; two nephews, John Burris Frink Jr. and Wayne King, both of the home; a sister-in-law, Bertha Ward Gowans of Louisburg; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Viewing will be held one hour before the services at the church. There will be no viewing following the service.

BRUNSWICK Wayne Dixon Hill, 67, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was born July 22, 1939 in Columbus County, the son of Minnie Blackman Hill and the late Henry Hill.
Hill was a graduate of Whiteville High School. He formerly worked with Georgia-Pacific as a supervisor for 17 years and was owner of W.D. Hill Construction Company for more than 20 years. Hill was a member of Brunswick Baptist Church.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines by the Rev. Merle Johnson. Interment will be in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Celia Winifred Phelps Hill; three sons, Wayne D. Hill Jr. of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Jason Hill of Wilson, and Dwayne Hill of Brunswick; two daughters, Gina Hill of Tampa, Fla. and Meredith Bodenshatz of Canton, Ohio; three stepsons, Chuck Blythe of Shallotte, Terry Blythe of Whiteville, and Todd Blythe of Georgetown, S.C.; five sisters, Carol McPherson, Linda McNeil, and Nancy Hill, all of Brunswick, Janet Smith of Ocean Isle, and Sue Crowell of Wilmington; two brothers, Rudolph Hill and Randy Hill, both of Brunswick, 14 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Rachel Lou Ella Fowler Sarvis Fipps, 92, formerly of Tabor City, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006 at Palmetto-Richland Hospital following an illness.
Fipps was born January 5, 1914 in Loris, S.C. a daughter of the late Bertie Fowler and the late Callie Strickland Fowler. She was the widow of Mr. Mack C. Fipps.
She is survived by seven children, 26 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006 from 6-8 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home in Loris, S.C.
