| Wolfpack faces big challenge at West Brunswick
By DAN BISER With a 3-1 record, the Whiteville Wolfpack will close out its 2006 non-conference football schedule Friday night when it takes on the West Brunswick Trojans at Shallotte. Kickoff is set for 7:30. Whiteville, which stormed past West Columbus 47-14 last week, will be taking on a West Brunswick team that gained its first win last Friday by shutting out county rival South Brunswick 18-0. “West Brunswick is 1-2 right now, but they could very well be 3-0,” said WHS head coach Mark Little. “Their first two losses to Socastee and Myrtle Beach were very close games.” Whiteville has won its last three games with the Trojans, including a 32-6 decision last season, but playing on the West Brunswick field has seemed to be a difficult task for the Wolfpack in recent years. Two years ago, Whiteville pulled out a 16-13 win on the Trojans’ home turf and in 2002 (Little’s first game as WHS head coach), West Brunswick stopped the visiting Wolfpack at the one-yard line on fourth down in the final seconds to pull out a 20-14 victory. West Brunswick coach Jimmy Fletcher has added Luke Little to his football staff this season after Little had served on his father’s Whiteville staff the past four years. The Trojans’ shutout victory over South Brunswick was their 19th straight win over the Cougars. WBHS senior running back Dee Hill ran for 196 yards on 22 carries and scored as time expired in the first half to give the Trojans a 12-0 lead. Hill went down with a leg injury early in its game with Whiteville and was out for the rest of the season. “Hill is one of the best backs we’ll see this season,” Little said. The Trojans are a 3A member of the Mideastern 3A-4A Conference. Fletcher is in his fourth season as Trojan head coach and still looking for his first win over Whiteville. Whiteville rolled up 424 yards rushing in last week’s win over West Columbus. Juniors Jarrod McKinney and Tyson Wilcox have each surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark in each of the last two games as Whiteville has gone almost exclusively with its multi-back ground attack. Through four games, the Whiteville defense has allowed only one first-half touchdown and that came in an 8-6 loss to unbeaten East Bladen. Kevin Gamble, John McZeak, Alex Royal and Albarin Powell are among the WHS defensive leaders. Whiteville will step into Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference play on Sept. 22 when plays host to East Columbus. Friday’s game will mark the 31st Wolfpack-Trojan football meeting. Whiteville holds a 17-13 edge in the series that began in 1972. |
