OBITUARIES

LAURA E. HOWARD

BLADENBORO – Laura Elaine Howard, 76, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 at Columbus Regional Health-care. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25 at Center Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Albert Singletary. Burial will be in the Kelly Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Sheila MacDonald of Whiteville, and Marjorie Felton of New York; a son, Timothy Howell of Bladenboro; three stepdaughters, Addie Mae Haley and Mary Moyd, both of Whiteville, and Linda Pridgen of Charlotte; three stepsons, Jimmy Howard of New Jersey, William Howard of Whiteville, and Charles Howard of Lumberton; three sisters, Cynthia Thompson of Bladenboro, Fannie Brown of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Annie Singletary of Maryland; and a brother, James Thompson of New York.

Viewing will be at the church following the service.

 

ESTHER JACQUELINE ADAMS SAVAGE

COUNCIL – Esther Jacqueline Adams Savage, 67, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born in Bladen County. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Isabelle Adams. She was predeceased by a sister, Priscilla “Tid” Stewart.

She retired from Bladen County School System. She was manager of the cafeteria at the Clarkton School, and employed for more than 30 years there.

Final rites were held Sunday, Sept. 24 at Bladen Funeral Home Chapel in Elizabethtown with the Rev. David Rutland officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Horeb Church Cemetery in Council. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Adrian Paul Savage Sr., two sons, Lynn Savage and wife Connie of Elizabethtown; and Paul Savage of Lisbon; five brothers, Tommy Adams, Tullen Adams, Houston Adams, Charles Adams, and Bobby Adams, all of Bladenboro; three sisters, Linda Carroll, JoAnn Long, and Kathleen Edwards, all of Bladenboro; and five grandchildren, Stacey Savage, Chris Savage, Casey Savage, Colby Savage, and Chandler Savage.

 

GERTRUDE N. SOLES

CHADBOURN – Gertrude Nobles Soles, 85, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006 in Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Bradly Devon Nobles and Annie White Nobles. She is the widow of Doc F. Soles.

Final rites were held Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Hubert Herring, with interment in the Duncan Cemetery in Chadbourn. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Larry R. Soles of Chadbourn; three daughters, Rachel A. Morin of Chadbourn, Betty Hinson of Clarendon, and Bonnie Hinson of Chadbourn; two brothers, Clyde Nobles and McNeil Nobles, both of Chadbourn; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

 

HOUSTON NILE BRISSON

DUBLIN – Houston Nile Brisson, died on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006. A celebration of his life was held Saturday, Sept. 23 at Elizabethtown Baptist Church, followed by visitation in the Christian Activity Center at the church.

Brisson was the son of Daniel Brisson and Lula Mae King was born in Elizabethtown on Feb. 1, 1924. He was married to the late Irene Gore Brisson. He lived in Dublin where, together with his wife, they built a family and a business, Peanut Processors, Inc. The companies are known as “Houston’s Peanuts.”

He celebrated his strong Christian faith as a member of the Dublin First Baptist Church and Elizabethtown Baptist Church. He served as a Sunday school teacher, and many other positions.

A devoted member of his community, he was active in social and civic clubs. He served on the Board of Trustees of Campbell University, Board of Trustees of Bladen Community College, and Board of Trustees of Bank of America.

Brisson is remembered as a friend to all. He was very interested in the well-being of others and was instrumental in improving the lives of those around him.

Survivors include his sisters, Betty Lou Mock, and Faye Pappas; his children, Rhee Brisson Sutton of Dublin, and Houston Nile Brisson Jr. and wife, Lynn Simmons Brisson of Elizabethtown; and his grandchildren, William Hobbs Sutton III of Wilmington, Jeffrey Brian Brisson and wife, Jill Bradshaw of Wallace, Houstin Brisson Sutton and wife, Faison Gibson Sutton of Wilmington, and Jonathan Grant Sutton of New York, N.Y.; and many nieces nephews and dear friends.

BONNIE FAYE WEST SELLERS

LUMBERTON – Bonnie Faye West Sellers, 72, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006 at her residence.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, Sept. 19 at West Cemetery in Lumberton with the Rev. Roger Worley officiating. Floyd Mortuary and Crematory of Lumberton handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, George Blaine Sellers of Yuba City, Calif.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

 

CURTIS ‘HORTON’ CLAYTER

RIEGELWOOD – Curtis “Horton” Clayter, 67, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006. He was the son of the late Retha Clayter and Irvin Elwood Clayter. He was predeceased by two brothers, “Billy” Clayter and Irvin E. Clayter Jr.

Final rites were held Saturday, Sept. 23 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kelly with the Reverends Leonard Sheppard, Dean Morton, and Patsy Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Delco Community Cemetery in Delco. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Norma “Sue” Clayter of the home; two daughters, Vicky Britt of Delco, and Tammy Morrison of Leland; a brother, Glenn “Sonny” Clayter of Riegelwood; three sisters, Shirley O’Neal and Betty Hagood, both of Delco, and Hilda Muse of Riegelwood; and four grandchildren.

HILDA GREY ISRAEL LEWIS

LELAND -- Hilda Grey Israel Lewis, of the Town Creek area, died on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 after a long illness. She was born in Whiteville on Aug. 28, 1931 to the late Perry J. Israel and Rosa Starling Israel. She was predeceased by her husband, James C. Lewis Jr.; a brother, Earl Israel; and a sister, Sadie Israel Soles.

Lewis graduated in 1949 from Whiteville High School and was an active member of Zion Methodist Church in Leland. She worked with special needs children at Town Creek Park through Brunswick County Parks and Recreation and volunteered at the Winnabow Fire Department.

She was a member of the Zion Craft Group at her church, sang in the choir and served as a Communion Steward. She was a member and held various positions in Town Creek Senior Citizens, Town Creek Extension Homemakers, and the N.C. Extension and Community Association.

Lewis received the Governor’s Volunteer Award for Outstanding Volunteer in Education and Literacy for Brunswick County in 1997. She also worked for many years as a volunteer at The Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at Zion Methodist Church with the Reverends Rob Hammond and Steve Hall officiating. A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall.

Survivors include a daughter, Patti Lewis Felton of Wilmington; a son, J. Craig Lewis of Leland; a sister, Naomi Israel Farr of Wilmington; a brother, Edwin J. Israel of Whiteville; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

LENA ELNITA FRINK HENRY

WHITEVILLE – Lena Elnita Frink Henry died on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006 Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26 at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Chadbourn with the Rev. Adolphus Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow in the Belvue Cemetery. D&A Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia H. Turner of Temple Hills, Md.; four sons, James E. Henry Sr. of Waldorf, Md.; Roy L. Henry of Whiteville, and Joseph A. Henry and John R. Henry, both of Washington, D.C.; 10 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.

 

CARL J. CONNOR SR.

FAIR BLUFF – Carl J. Connor Sr., 75, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late Roy Lee Connor and Bertha Lee Barnes Connor.

Connor served in the United States Army National Guard and owned and operated Carl’s Garage in Fair Bluff.

Final rites were held Sunday, Sept. 24 at Porter Swamp Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Moore officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Randy Connor of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Joey Connor of Clarendon; three daughters, Lynn C. Shaw of Whiteville, Ginny C. Pacifico of Land O’ Lakes, Fla., and Teresa C. Fowler of Clarendon; a sister, Rebecca C. Nance of Fair Bluff; and four grandchildren.

LUCY EMMA TYSON PENNY

THOMASVILLE – Lucy Emma Tyson Penny, 80, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 at her residence. She was born May 19, 1926 in Robeson County, a daughter of the late Lewis and Frances Tyson. She was the widow of Fletcher Everett Penny. She was also preceded in death by sons, James Fletcher Penny and Bobby Lee Penny.

She was a homemaker, a former member of Poley Bridge Baptist Church in Whiteville and a member of the Davidson County Senior Citizens.

The family will receive friends at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Monday from 7-9 p.m. She will be taken to Peacock’s Funeral Home in Whiteville where the family will receive friends on Tuesday, Sept. 26 from 7-8:30 p.m.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines of Whiteville. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery in Whiteville.

Survivors include daughters, Betty Jean Nobles of Lexington, Frances Poston and Elsie Joiner, both of Thomasboro, Tammy Faye Brazell of Whiteville, and Teresa Ann Penny of Chadbourn; sisters, Rosie Tyson Lee, Leta Tyson Lee, Margie Tyson Watson, and Caroleen Tyson Suggs, all of Whiteville; brothers, Kellan Tyson, Ervin Tyson, and Marden Tyson, all of Whiteville; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE – Harrie Lee Keel, 52, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

LUCILLE WALKER ROGERS SCHLICHT

BOLTON – Lucille Walker Rogers Schlicht, 84, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 in Columbus Regional Healthcare after an extended illness.

She was born Nov. 10, 1921 the daughter of the late Robert James and Mittie Best Walker. She was preceded in death by her husbands, M.D. Rogers and Erwin H. Schlicht; a sister, Ruby Walker, and two brothers, William H. Walker and Curtis Walker.

She was formerly employed with Vinelle Corporation in Washington, D.C. She served as a goodwill ambassador with her husband, Erwin Schlict in China and Africa.

Final rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines with the Rev. King White officiating. Interment will be in the Cheerful Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Ragsdale of Poquoson, Va., and Martha Holmes of Bolton; two brothers, King Walker of Dunn, and Robert Walker of Wilmington.

The family will receive friends at the home of Dan and Jackie Shipman, 125 Poplar Street, Bolton.

RONALD ‘RON’ PHILLIP ALLEN JR.

BLADENBORO – Ronald “Ron” Phillip Allen Jr., 36, formerly of Tar Heel, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006. He was predeceased by his grandfather, Fred Gibson.

Final rites will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25 by the Reverends Tom Willoughby and Michael Oliver at the Tar Heel Fire Department. Burial will follow at the Tar Heel Baptist Church Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

EWELL C. ROBESON

DUBLIN – Ewell C. Robeson, 91, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was a farmer.

Final rites were held Monday, Sept. 25 at Singletary United Methodist Church in Dublin with the Reverends Patrick Sinclair and Henry Lee, and Lynn King officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery in Dublin. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Isabella Irene Robeson; four sons, Allan Robeson, Tim Robeson, Leon Robeson, and Robert Robeson; six daughters, Ellen Whitmill, Judy Hehl, Sharon Robeson, Cathy Atkinson, Anita Boney, and Jane Singletary; 14 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

LORIS, S.C. – Windell Powell, 63, of the Mt. Zion community, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 at his home. He is the son of the late Charlie Mack Powell and Edith Turbeville Powell.

Final rites will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Frances Fowler Powell of the home; a son, Jonathan Powell of Loris, S.C.; two daughters, Tammy Donahay of Glen Allen, Va., and Nancy Rowell of Loris, S.C.; four brothers, Ervin Powell, Elbert Powell, Bobby Powell, and Dale Powell, all of Loris, S.C.; four sisters, Ila Pearl Kimbrell, and Shelby Jean Stroud, both of Rock Hill, S.C., Lucinda Faircloth, and Linda Faye Fowler, both of Tabor City; and three grandchildren.

ALBANY, N.Y. – Doris Dewitt Lewis, formerly of Chadbourn, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 in Albany. She was the daughter of the late Covell and Luella Dewitt of Chadbourn.

W.A. BEASLEY

WAXHAW – W.A. Beasley, 88, formerly of Whiteville, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late Willie Lyon Beasley and Annie Bell Jordon.

Beasley was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Mercer Johnson Beasley; a sister, Sarah Love Hill, and a brother, Jefferson Beasley.

He retired from Brown & Root Construction Company.

Final rites were held Sunday, Sept. 24 at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Willie Allen officiating. Burial followed in the Western Prong Baptist Church Cemetery. McKenzie Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Johnson of Waxhaw, and Diane Byrd of Whiteville; six sons, William Daniel “Buddy” Beasley of Baltimore, Md., Robert Lee “Bobby” Beasley of Rock Hill, S.C., David Michael “Mike” Beasley of Lexington, S.C., Jerry Dean “Butch” Beasley of Summerville, S.C., Melvin Johnson of Florida, and Joseph Johnson of Waxhaw; a sister, Dorothy Beasley Powell of Hallsboro; 24 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

ABBOTTSBURG – Horace Brown, 75, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Smith Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the George Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Viewing will be held Tuesday from 1-8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9 until time of service.

 

REV. JESSIE M. EDWARDS

CHADBOURN – Rev. Jessie Murle Edwards, 57, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He was the son of the late Jessie D. and Viola Stone Edwards. He was a graduate of Fruitland Bible Institute, class of 2004.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Boardman Baptist Church with the Rev. Hal Stephens officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Miller Edwards of the home; a daughter, Linda Miller Edwards of the home; daughter, Lisa E. Linarrtz of Delco; a son, Jason Edwards of Chadbourn; brothers, Elgie Edwards of Chadbourn, Wilton Edwards of Lumberton and Wayne Edwards of Wilmington; sisters, Pattie Finberg of Wilmington and Ola Wicker of Fayetteville; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

 

ALENE DUNCAN ANDREWS

CHADBOURN -- Alene Duncan Andrews, 85, died  Friday, Sept. 22, 2006  at Waterbrooke Assisted Living in Tabor City.  She was the wife of the late Odell S. “Andy” Andrews and the daughter of the late Oscar and Sally Ward Duncan.

A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25 at Ward’s Station Church of God Cemetery, Chadbourn with the Reverends James Hester and John McPherson officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda K. Dennis of Manning, S.C.; sons, Billy Ray Nobles, Ralph Nobles and Rev. James H. Nobles, all of Chadbourn; sisters, Myrtle Hughes of Chadbourn, Mary Blair of Jacksonville, Fla., and Earlene Godwin of Florida; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE – Sime B. Peterson, 86, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

WHITEVILLE – Shula Stevens Culpepper, 91, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

ESSIE VICTORIA CANADY BENSON

LAKE WACCAMAW – Essie Victoria Canady Benson, 88, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2006 at the Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was the last sibling of Fletcher “Pop” Mayo Canady and Margaret Elisabeth “Lizzie” Gray Canady.

Final rites were held on Sunday, Sept. 17 at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Frank Turner officiating. Burial followed in the Lake Waccamaw Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Thelba “Bud” Albert Benson of Lake Waccamaw; stepdaughter, Donna Benson Little of Lake Waccamaw; grandchildren, Vicki Keeter Strom of Crofton, Md., and Marian “Libby” Keeter Piispanen of Allentown, Pa.; four great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; nephew, Vernon Keeter of Lake Waccamaw; and several other nephews.

 

JUANITA P. LENNON

DELCO – Juanita Peterson Lennon, 90, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington. Lennon was the daughter of the late Johnny Peterson and Nellie Lennon Peterson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles S. Lennon Sr.; two brothers, Watous Peterson and John D. Peterson; and a sister, Mary Viola Peterson Squires.

Final rites were held Saturday, Sept. 22 at Livingston Baptist Church with the Reverends Bryan Beaver and Richard Wade officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Lennon Jr. and George Dallas Lennon, both of Delco; four sisters, Leonia Parrish of Smithfield, Edna Kelly of Wake Forest, Madelyn Hughes of Delco, Vernell Bettis of Leland; one brother, Calvin Peterson of Salisbury, Md.; two grandsons, Harvey Lennon and Bryan Lennon of Delco; several nieces and nephews.
