Stallions stomp Scorpions
Price gets 100th win LELAND Joey Price says that he doesn’t pay much attention to milestones and benchmarks, but it still had to be a satisfying Friday evening for the South Columbus High school head football coach. With a convincing 35-7 decision over the host North Brunswick Scorpions, the Stallions gave Price his 100th career victory in this his 10th season as head coach. South Columbus, behind a running game that rolled up 321 yards, jumped to a quick 14-0 lead and never looked back in the Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference opener. The Stallions improved their season record at 4-1. Price said that reaching the 100th victory plateau is credited to the players, assistant coaches and overall support from the entire school and community. “I haven’t played a down since I got here,” said Price in his usual dead-pan manner. “What I’m most pleased with is that we came away with a road win against one of the better teams in our conference. Our kids came to play.” Stallion back James Vereen had another big night, carrying the ball 16 times for 150 yards, including a 61-yard sprint that gave SCHS a 21-0 lead in the opening moments of the first quarter. Fullback Andrae Jacobs ran for 99 yards on 15 carries and scored both of the Stallions’ first-quarter touchdown on runs of 2 and 15 yards. The only SCHS pass completion of the night resulted in a 24-yard scoring play with Justin Duncan throwing to Dakota Piver. Buster James added a 12-yard TD run and Donovan was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra point kicks. The win extended the Stallions’ conference winning streak to 18 straight, They have suffered only one conference loss since the start of the 2000 season. Since Price became head coach in 1997, SCHS has suffered only 21 losses, including just 12 in regular -season play. North Brunswick, which finished runnerup to the Stallions in the Waccamaw Conference last year, got its only score in the final seconds of the first half on a two-yard run by Josh Balloon. The Scorpions, who were held to a total of 67 yards rushing, saw their record drop to 2-3 with all three of their losses coming on their homefield. South Columbus will travel to Wallace this Friday night to take on the two-time Eastern N.C. 1AA champions Wallace-Rose Hill Bulldogs in a huge non-conference game. The Bulldogs, coached by former SCHS head coach Jack Holley, are now 5-0 following last week’s 42-7 shellacking of previously unbeaten East Carteret. Last season, WRH came to South Columbus and drubbed SCHS 34-0. It was the Stallions’ only regular-season loss of the season. North Brunswick will resume Waccamaw Conference play Friday at East Columbus.
