OBITUARIES
PATSY ANN BRAXTON FOGLE

ALLENDALE, S.C. – Patsy Ann Braxton Fogle died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006 at Lexington Medical Center in Lexington, S.C. after an extended illness. She was born in Fairfax, S.C. Sept. 27, 1941, a daughter of the late Willie Braxton and Lillie Altman Pender Braxton Martin.

Fogle was the owner and operator of Pat – Pat’s Nursery in Allendale for 25 years. She was a member of the Fairfax Baptist Church, where she was active with the Young at Heart Seniors Group, and a member of the Ever-Blooming Garden Club there.

She was a member of the Spring Branch Baptist Church in Nichols, S.C. and was a member of the Red Hat Society.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28 at Fairfax Baptist Church with the Reverends Phillip Latta, Robert Jumper and Walt Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in Swallow Savannah Cemetery in Allendale. Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton, S.C. is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, George Leslie Fogle of the home; a son, George Clinton Fogle of Lexington; a daughter, Camey F. Hayes of Fair Bluff; a brother, Billy Pender of Santee, S.C.; and two grandsons.

WOODUS HIRAM
STANLEY

GREENSBORO–Woodus Hiram Stanley, 79, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006 at Moses Cone Hospice Unit. Stanley was born Dec. 27, 1926 in Chadbourn the son of the late James Hiram and Rachel Nobles Stanley. He was also preceded in death by a son, Frank Stanley; brothers, Woodrow, Wilson, Elroy and William S. Stanley, and a sister, Emma Stanley Nobles.

Stanley was in the United Navy from 1944-1946 as a Petty Officer and was a Gunner’s Mate on a Liberty ship. He served in the Atlantic and the Pacific during wartime.

He was a member of the Greensboro Super Seniors, a member of the Masonic Lodge #76, a Shriner and a member of Guilford Park Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service was held Sunday, Sept. 24 at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. The family received friends following the service in the church parlor. Cremation Services, Inc. of Winston-Salem handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Taylor Stanley; a son, James Taylor (Karen) Stanley of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Rachel Stanley (Lang) MacBain of Charlotte; a sister, Minnie Stanley Hinson of Columbus County; five grandchildren, Jake, Anne, Will, Taylor, and Charlie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Guilford Park Presbyterian Church, 2100 Fernwood Dr., Greensboro, N.C. 27408 or to one’s favorite charity.

ROBERT CARTRETTE

LEXINGTON – Robert Wayne Cartrette, 58, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2066 at his home after an extended illness. He was born Feb. 13, 1948 in Columbus County to Daniel Cartrette and the late Beulah Soles Cartrette. He was preceded in death by five brothers, John, James, George, Donald and Jim Cartrette, and a sister, Eva Lee.

Cartrette worked for 28 years for Coble Dairy and recently for Hekman Furniture.

Final rites were held Saturday, Sept. 23 at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel by the Reverends Randy Lucas and Carroll Lupton Jr. Burial followed in Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery. Davidson Funeral Home of Lexington handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Kaye Dorsett Cartrette of the home; a son, Robert Cartrette Jr.; two daughters, Deana Hargan and Andrea Walser, both of Lexington; four brothers, Ben Cartrette of Pulaski, Va., Elbert Cartrette of Wilson, and Auburn Cartrette, and Sam Cartrette, all of Lexington; and two sisters, Geneva Hill, and his twin sister, Faye Howell, both of Lexington; and six grandchildren.

Memorials maybe directed to Hospice of Davidson County, P.O. Box 1941, Lexington, N.C. 27293.

SANDRA V. MONROE

CLARKTON – Sandra V. Monroe, 50, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital. She was a LPN with Community Innovations.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28 at the True Vine Holiness Church by Pastor Luell Campbell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Charles W. Monroe Jr., a daughter, Kimberly Monroe of the home; a son, Charles W. Monroe III of Lake Waccamaw; three sisters, Crettie Jacobs, Leona Cromartie, and Brenda Burney, all of Clarkton; three brothers, Thomas Burney of Ammon, Rudolph Blanks and Alphonzo Burney, both of Clarkton.

Viewing will be at the church Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. and again following the service.

ARTIS SIMPSON
GRANGE

COUNCIL – Artis Simpson Grange, 94, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 at Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation of Wilmington. She was the daughter of the late Richard and Minnie C. Simpson.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30 at Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Carvers Creek Cemetery, Council. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Granger Riddy of Charlotte, Wade Simpson of the home, and Garrett Simpson of Morrow, Ga., a brother, Sylvester Simpson of Riegelwood; a sister, Irene Newkirk of Elizabethtown, and four grandchildren.

Viewing will be Friday, Sept. 29 from 1-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 until noon at the funeral home, and one hour prior to services at the church.

DORIS DEWITT LEWIS

ALBANY, N.Y. – Doris Dewitt Lewis, formerly of Chadbourn, died on Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 in Albany. She was the daughter of the late Covell and Luella Dewitt of Chadbourn.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30 at The Church of Jesus Christ, 571 Clinton Ave., Albany, N.Y. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Garland Brothers Funeral Home of Albany, N.Y. is in charge of services. Smith’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is announcing for the family.

Survivors include a son, Patrick Lewis of Chadbourn; a daughter, Dorisha Lewis of Albany, N.Y.; eight sisters, Betty Lou Inman, Pansy Mickedson, Joyce Bridgman, Uthia Benson, Barbara Ann Dewitt, Janie Thompson, all of Albany, N.Y., Hazel Dewitt of Miami, Fla., and Irene Swinton of Chadbourn; four brothers, Covell Jr., Wayne, and Jerry Dewitt, all of Albany, N.Y., and Chester Dewitt of Providence, R.I.

LYNN BARKER
SIMMONS

MELBOURN, Fla. -- Lynn Barker Simmons, 38, formerly of Whiteville and Myrtle Beach, S.C., passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

He is survived by his mother, Lois Worrell of Melbourne, Fla.; brothers: Joe Watts and wife, Ginni of Melbourne, Fla., Pastor Ron Watts and wife, Gail of Raleigh, Marty Watts and wife, Ellen of Wilmington; sisters: Brittin Randolph of Wilmington, Teresa Kowalcyk and husband Gene of Richmond Heights, Ohio, Nancy Watts of Wilmington; 10 nieces and nephews and five great-nieces and nephews; very special friends, Rae Allen, Malia and daughter Angel, Brett Rader of W. Va.; several aunts, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Allen Simmons Sr., and a brother, Charles Allen Simmons Jr.

A memorial service for Simmons will be held in Myrtle Beach, S.C. at a later date.

GAVIN NEIL RAY

TAR HEEL – Gavin Neil Ray, two months old, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 at Beth Carr Presbyterian Church of Tar Heel. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by his father, James A. Ray; his mother, Lisa Ray; his twin brother, Dylan James Ray; a sister, Sara Christine Ray; maternal grandfather, Darren Heintzelman; paternal grandparents, Jimmie Ray and Sara Ray. Predeceased by maternal grandmother, Christine Heintzelman.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Gavin Ray Funeral Fund, Bladen Funeral Home, P.O. Box 3150, Elizabethtown, N.C. 28337.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at the church fellowship hall and at other times at the home.

SIME B. PETERSON JR.

WHITEVILLE – Sime B. Peterson Jr., 86, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 at Hallsboro Memorial Park by the Rev. Algernon McKenzie. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a sister, Mattie McNeill of Fayetteville.

Viewing will be at the cemetery following the service.

HARRIE LEE KEEL

WHITEVILLE – Harrie Lee Keel, 52, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

He was a United States Army veteran.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Sept. 27 at
First Baptist Church in Clarendon by the Rev. William R. Nesbitt. Burial followed in the Todd Cemetery #2 in Clarendon. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Vanessa Keel; four daughters, Lakeva Keel and Micaela Keel, both of Bladenboro, Jada Keel and Jasmine Nealy of the home; two sons, Hareko Keel of Japan and Daquan Keel of the home; his mother, Linnie Keel of Chadbourn; four sisters, Juanita Keel, Doris Tillman, and Annie Alsbrooks, all of High Point, and Mary Lou Keel of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four brothers, Glenn Keel of Lumberton, Ralph Keel of Chadbourn, Craig Keel and Billy Keel, both of High Point.

STEVIE JOHN BUTLER

CLARENDON – Stevie John Butler, 45, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006 at Duke Medical Center, Durham. He was born in Columbus County, the son of John H. Butler and Mildred Eloise Penny B. Odom.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Poley Bridge Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Lane with interment to follow in the McKeithan Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie O. Butler of Clarendon; two sons, Derrick Butler of Clarendon, and Chris Ivey of Whiteville; four daughters, Amy Hunt of Roseland, Justine Boone of Whiteville, Nicole Ivey of Nakina, and Laquisha Prince of Clarendon; his mother, Mildred Odom of Lumberton; his father, John Butler of Whiteville; two sisters, Donna Chavis of Clarendon, and Debbie Butler of Whiteville; a brother, Robert C. Butler of Chadbourn, and four grandchildren.

COUNCIL – Anthony Brown, 42, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006 at Bladen County Hospital.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28 at Shady Grove AME Zion Church, Council with the Rev. Marjorie Powell officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery, Council. F.W. Newton & Sons Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Detra Smith Brown; a son, Macon; four daughters, Markeda, Brianna, Maya, and Victoria; his mother, Mollie Brown Bell; stepfather, Tommy Bell; a sister, Debra Faulkner; and two brothers, Denorris and Andre Brown.

CHARLES NEALY

CERRO GORDO – Charles Nealy, 58, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was a mechanic.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Kevin Bellamy. Burial will follow in the Jenkins Cemetery in Whiteville. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Tamika Nealy of Detroit, Mich.; a son, Stephen Nealy of Detroit, Mich.; his father, Lindsey Jacobs; three sisters, Mirline Hayes and Deborah Lewis of White Plains, Md., and Jessirene Jenkins of Mt. Clemens, Mich.; and a brother, Glen Jenkins of Washington, D.C.

Viewing will be at the funeral Thursday from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Friday following the service.

PEARLIE IRENE TYREE

WHITEVILLE – Pearlie Irene Tyree, 93, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006. She was born March 12, 1913 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Patrick Sam and Nettie Sellers Stevens. She was the widow of Clyde H. Tyree. She formerly was co-owner of Tyree Feed Mill.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines with the Rev. Roy Walker officiating. Interment will follow in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock’s Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include five sons, Floyd Tyree of Sandyville, Ohio, Norman Tyree, Winston Tyree, James Tyree and Wayne Tyree, all of Whiteville; a daughter, Anne Cartret of Chadbourn; 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grand-children, and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28 at the funeral home.

BLADENBORO – Barbara J. Singletary, 68, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

WHITEVILLE – Wendell “Bunny” Jacobs, 50, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was a welder.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 at Pierces Chapel AME Zion Church, Clarkton. Pastor Harrison Branch will officiate. Burial will follow at Mitchellfield Cemetery. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Patrice Ellis, three sons, Robert Jacobs, Wendell Jr. Jacobs, Jermaine Flemming; two sisters, Pastor Annette McKoy, Cynthia Jacobs; three brothers, Clinton Jacobs, Tony Jacobs, Eddie Jacobs.

Viewing will be on Thursday, Sept. 28 at the funeral home from 4-9 p.m.

RIEGELWOOD – Lena Young, 89, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006 at the Brunswick Cove.
