WILLIAM C. ‘SHORTY’ JAMES
WHITEVILLE William Clayton “Shorty” James, 65, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006 at his residence. He was born in Horry County, S.C., the son of the late Lewis Dow James and Annie Lee Fowler James.
Final rites were held Saturday, Sept. 2 at Inman Chapel with interment in the Coleman Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Letha Mae Norris James of the home; five sons, Teinne James and Buster James, both of Whiteville; Willie James of Tabor City, Gleon James of Lexington, and Ryan James of Welcome; three brothers, Clyde James of Tabor City, Ronald James and Dow James, both of Lexington; three sisters, Alice Norris, Myrtle Spivey, and Rosa Lee Caines, all of Tabor City; 19 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
LEXINGTON, S.C. Bobbie Jo Judy, 35, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006. Born in Savannah, Ga. she is the daughter of Betty Long Morlan.
Judy was a life time area resident employed at Hampton Jaguar where she proved to be a devoted employee and excelled in her position. She attended Richland N.E. High School.
Final rites were held Wednesday, Aug. 30 in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington with the Rev. Charles Starling officiating. Interment was held Thursday, Aug. 31 at Harley Ford Cemetery, Tabor City. Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, S.C. handled the arrangements.
Surviving in addition to her mother, Betty Morlan and father, Harrell Marlan are her husband, Robert Dexter Judy Jr., a daughter, Loren Taylor Fish; a son, Thomas Allen Fish of Lexington, S.C.; and two sisters, Cindy Morlan of West Columbia, S.C. and Dawn Morlan of Lexington, S.C.
Memorials may be made to the Loren and Thomas Fish Scholarship Fund, c/o First Citizens Bank, 1230 Main Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201.
WHITEVILLE Missionary Elsie R. Taylor, 74, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006 at Columbus Regional Health-care. She was a homemaker.
Final rites were held Sunday, Sept. 3 at the Peoples Funeral Home Chapel in Whiteville. Burial followed in Kelly Cemetery in Bladenboro. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Vidal Taylor; a daughter, Evangelist De-sonia Martin of Whiteville; a sister, Willomena McNair of Whiteville; two brothers, Mack Lester Jones of Whiteville and Raymond Jones Jr. of the home.
LELAND Dennis Lamond Sealey died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born Oct. 2, 1948 the son of the Nola Cribb Nance of Chadbourn and the late Talmadge Sealey.
Sealey was retired from General Electric, was a veteran of the United States Army, and a member of the Church of the Good Shepard Episcopal Church.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Sept. 3 at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel by the Rev. Ed Dunlap. Andrews Mortuary of Wilmington handled the arrangements.
Survivors in addition to his mother is his wife, Julia Sealey of the home; two sons, Sam Sealey and wife Cheryl of Wilmington, and Brian Sealey of Georgia; two daughters, Traci Burnett and husband Leamon of Stanley, and Jennifer Pruett and husband Brian of Charlotte; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and his step-father, E.W. Nance of Chadbourn.

WHITEVILLE Lucky Smith, 63, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006. He was born Aug. 30, 1943 in Columbus County, the son of the late Braxton and Lillie Ikner Smith. He was a carpenter and an avid golfer, hunter and country music fan.
Final rites were held Sunday, Sept. 3 at Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines with the Rev. Mitchell Smith officiating. Interment followed in Western Prong Church Cemetery. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Becky Monroe Smith; a son, Lewis Smith of Castalia; a daughter, Peggy Dalley and husband, Jerry of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Cole, Matthew and Tommy Dalley; three brothers, Odell Smith and wife, Mary Alice, Rudolph Smith and wife, Darnell, and Jack Smith and wife, Betty, all of Whiteville; a sister, Ruth Nance of Chadbourn.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ed Smith, Ethell Smith and Ezra Smith; five sisters, Ruby Pait, Ila Mae Tyner, Betty Nealy, Marjorie Smith, and Lucille Garrell.
Serving as pallbearers were Johnny Atkinson, Freddy Bartley, James Hammonds, Kevin Davis, Ken David and Lee Parker.
CHADBOURN Cephas Vander Ward Sr., 75, of the Mt. Moriah community, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was a janitor and farmer.
Final rites were held Saturday, Sept. 2 at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church with Bishop L.R. Williamson eulogizing. Burial followed in the Mt. Moriah Memorial Gardens. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Veronica Coving-ton of Lumberton; a son, Cephas Ward Jr. of Freeport, N.Y.; two brothers, Wynn Lee Ward of the Mt. Moriah community of Chadbourn, and Herman T. Ward of Whiteville; three sisters, Novella Whitaker of Chadbourn, Marie Umstead of Durham, and Evelyn Blackmon of Lancaster, S.C.

WALLACE HUFFMAN
WHITEVILLE Willetta Ray Wallace Huffman, 88, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2006 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center in Wilmington. She was born in Trafalgar, Ind., the daughter of Ethel and Charles Ray.
She graduated from Purdue University in 1940 with a degree in home economics, which she taught in both Indiana and at Whiteville High School retiring in the late 1970s. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, the Major General Robert Howe Chapter of DAR and Whiteville United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by Wesley S. Wallace, her husband until his death in 1978. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Elizabeth Ray Lawlis and Verlin, Virginia Ray Naile and David, and a brother, Charles O. Ray, all of Trafalgar, Ind. and a brother, James Ray and Peg of Terra Haute, Ind. and Florida.
Final rites were held Monday, Sept. 4 at Whiteville United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Benson officiating with burial following in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Phillip Ray Huffman of Whiteville and Wilmington; a daughter, Lynn Wallace Crutchfield and husband Dick of Lake Waccamaw; step-daughters, Phyllis Huffman Herman and husband Michael of Arlington, Va. and Martha Huffman Barcus and Gary Pond of South Bend, Ind.; a brother, Bill Ray and wife Evelyn of Trafalgar, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Wilma Ray of Greensburg, Ind.; grandchildren, Susan Crutchfield McGarry and Dennis of Denver, Colo.; Julie Crutchfield Nesbit and Chad of Wilmington, Rich Crutchfield and wife Ann of Portland, Ore., and Sarah Crutchfield of Columbia, S.C.; two great-grandchildren, Anna and Elizabeth McGarry of Denver, Colo; step-grandchildren, Rebecca, Joseph and Amy Herman of Arlington, Va. and Brett Lewis of Portland, Ore. There are numerous nieces, nephews, great and great-great-nieces and nephews.

NAKINA Gerald Dwight Wilcox II, 40, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2006 resulting from an automobile accident. He is the son of Gerald D. Wilcox of New Kent, Va. and the late Mattie Watts Wilcox.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6 at Inman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Henry McKeithan officiating. Burial will follow in the Watts Cemetery in Nakina. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.
Survivors other than his father includes a brother, Rock Wilcox of Nakina; two sisters, Sandra Anderson of Portsmouth, Va. and Karen Timpa of Vinton, La.; his grandmother, Ruth J. Wilcox of New Kent, Va.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 5 from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. (See story on front page)
