Like many people, we wanted to hear more about adding fluoride to municipal and county water systems before reaching a conclusion.
The City of Whiteville has approved the addition of fluoride and the county commissioners are considering the option now.
We believe the facts weigh heavily on the side that adding fluoride is a positive health benefit.
First, we encourage doubters, who indeed have legitimate concerns about fluoride, to consider that respected health organizations such as the National Cancer Institute and Centers for Disease Control see no danger in adding fluoride to water systems and even endorse its use.
There’s a lot of hyperbole and misinformation about fluoride on the internet, but as long as it is properly administered, fluoride has been shown by these respected health organizations to be no threat to humans’ overall health.
We also encourage doubters to talk to dentists, school nurses and teachers about the pitiful condition of many children’s teeth. These professionals see the pain and suffering every day inflicted by poor dental care, essentially because many parents could care less if their children regularly brush their teeth.
Certainly, the opinions of those who have fears of fluoride must be respected, because in large doses, it can be harmful.
But when considering the endorsements of cancer-prevention organizations and the long track record 60 years of fluoride’s safe use in water systems, there appears to be much to be gained with little risk.
