OBITUARIES
DOROTHY ‘DOT’ S. ELKIN

WASHINGTON-- Dorothy "Dot" S. Elkin, of 431 East 12th Street, Washington, died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006 at her home. She was born in Whiteville.  She was the daughter of the late Henry E. Stanley and Vira Hinson Stanley.

She attended Columbus County Schools and was a graduate of William Township High School and also a graduate of Palmer College in Charlotte in 1956. She was employed with National Spinning of Whiteville, Warsaw and Washington plants for 38 years as personnel manager and human resource manager and was presently employed as office manager for the Beaufort County Economic Development Commission.  Miss Dot was a member of the First Baptist Church of Washington and the Women of the Moose.

A funeral service was held at Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Moore officiating and Hubert Stanley assisting.  Burial followed in Oakdale Cemetery.

Survivors include her son, Bobby J. Elkin and his wife, Gulshan of Washington and Russia; two granddaughters,  Bobbie Elkin of Wilmington and Audrey Elkin of Washington; one great-granddaughter, Jade Elkin of Wilmington; four sisters, Gladys Mills of Clarendon, June Nichols Lorraine Bullock, both of Chadbourn and Lucille Cox of Guideway; three brothers, Hubert Stanley of Garner,  Paul Stanley and  Selmon Stanley, both of Clarendon.

Pallbearers were Kevin Richards, Mike Gwynn, Tom Thompson, Buster Humphreys, Bob Piciocco and Bennett Jayroe. Her Sunday school class served as honorary pallbearers.

MYRTLE ‘JEANNIE’ SQUIRES

KELLY – Myrtle “Jeannie” Squires, 55, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006 at her residence.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at Centerville Baptist Church in Kelly with the Rev. Teddy Lawson officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories in Kelly. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Stephen Squires; two sons, Tim Lee and Robert Lee, both of Charlotte; three brothers, J.D. Dupree, John Satterwhite, and David Satterwhite, all of Raleigh; four sisters, Polly Wade, Nancy Wade of Virginia, Jonnie Thompson of Garner, and Cathy Satterwhite of Pennsylvania; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the burial at the church.

 

JAMES O. POPE III

BLADENBORO -- James Orville Pope III, 47, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006. He is the son of Thelma Brown Mims and the late James Orville Pope II. He was predeceased by a stepbrother, Danny Berry.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the Bladen Funeral Home Chapel in Elizabethtown. Burial followed in Bladen Memorial Gardens in Elizabethtown. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown handled the arrangements.

Survivors other than his mother include his wife, Tammy Pope; a son, Robert James Pope; a daughter, Chrystal Pope; his stepmother, Louise Pope; a stepbrother, Dennis Berry; three stepsisters, Lynn Bell, Janice Stephens, and Doris Berry; and four grandchildren.

 

MAGDALENE OSBORNE

WHITEVILLE -- Mary Magdalene Osborne, 84, of Liberty Commons Nursing Home went to be with her eternal father on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006. She was born Sept. 9, 1921 in Columbus County. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph J. Osborne and a daughter, Brenda Osborne McKeithan and her husband, Allen McKeithan. She was a nurse’s aide for 12 years with Columbus County Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at Palmyra Baptist Church by the Rev. Oscar Hullender. Interment will be in Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery. Peacocks Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

She is survived by her son, Wayne Osborne and wife, Barbara of Old Dock; three grandchildren, Joyce Stocks and husband, Howard of Shallotte, Trina Rising and husband, Randy of Old Dock, Andy Osborne and wife, Renee of Shallotte; a stepgrandson, Ray Jacobs and wife, Tammy of Old Dock; four great-grandchildren, Courtney Rising, Olivia Rising, Hannah Stocks and Jacob Stocks; a step-great-grandchild, Lillie Jacobs.

Serving as pallbearers will be David Guyton, John Guyton, J.E. Stevens, Barry Stevens, Jerry Ward, and Floyd Powell.

 

HAROLD E. SOLES

TABOR CITY – Harold Elbert Soles, 65, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006 in Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born in Columbus County, the son of Hazel Gore Soles of Tabor City and the late Elbert Gaston Soles.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by Pete Duncan and Tommy Small with interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors other than his mother are three sons, Scott Harold Soles, Sammy David Soles and Ricky Dale Soles, all of Charlotte; two sisters, Lila Sarvis and Brenda Stocks, both of Tabor City; a brother, Ray Guy Soles of Tabor City, and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday night from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

VICTOR C. SOLES

WHITEVILLE – Victor Carl Soles, 86, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Asa Soles and Grace Gore Soles. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8 at the Inman Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Watts with entombment in the Gore Cemetery, Tabor City, with full military honors. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

He is survived by two sons, Douglas Soles of Clarendon and Richard Soles of Rocky Point; three daughters, Meriam Godwin of Clarendon, Linda Ward of Whiteville, and Sue Faulk of Nakina; a brother, Quinn Soles of Columbia, S.C.; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

JANIE G. BEATTY

BOLTON – Janie Graham Beatty, 90, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006 at Sunbridge Care for Elizabethtown. She is the widow of Marvin L. Beatty Sr.

Final rites will be held at noon on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Townsend Temple First Born Church in Bolton. Burial will follow in Smith Chapel Cemetery in Bolton. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include nine children, Ruther Beatty Shaw, Janie Rose Beatty Freeman, and Kenneth Beatty, all of Riegelwood, Blanchie B. Knox of Leland, Cleo Beatty, Alton Beatty, and Nathan Beatty, all of Bolton, Theodore Beatty of Council, Lester Beatty of Durham.

There will be a wake on Friday from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home in Whiteville. Viewing will be from 1-6 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home and on Saturday one hour prior to services at the church.

 

RUBY EDWARDS McKEE

BLADENBORO – Ruby Edwards McKee, beloved mother, Granny Mac, and GreatMa was released to glory on Monday, Sept. 4, 2006. She was surrounded by family and the everlasting love of her Lord. Born Jan. 18, 1910, she was preceded in death by her parents, Maggie and Joseph Calvin Edwards, her husband, Luther McKee, and brothers, Robert L., William A. and Jessie Ray.

She was an avid reader and gardener and we rejoice that she can now enjoy her favorite activities eternally. Her loved ones include her precious church family at Galeed Baptist Church “Miss Ruby” loved Jesus, her family, and her church.

Final rites will be held at Galeed Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 with the Rev. Bruce Cannon and Dr. Mack Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Lewis Funeral Home of Bladenboro is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three children, John Kenneth “J.K.” McKee and his wife Sue of Fayetteville, Jo Lynn McKee Ransom of Bladenboro, and Daphne McKee Little and her husband Crowell “Sandy” of Richmond, Va.; her grandchildren, Kimberly McKee Perez of Clayton, Elizabeth Kallie McKee of Lexington, Va., Audrey Ransom Strickland, Lewis Miles Ransom, and Jonathan Edwards Ransom, all of Bldenboro; William Bruce Ransom Jr. of Marietta, Ohio, Christopher Crowell Little, and Matthew McKee Little, both of Raleigh; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins including her much loved “sister” Lottie Leola “Lee” Edwards of Bladenboro.

The family will receive friends at the church from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8.

Memorial contributions may be made to Galeed Baptist Church’s Lottie Moon Offering, which supports foreign missionaries, which was her favorite ministry.

 

LARRY GILMORE STROLE SR.

WHITEVILLE – Larry Gilmore Strole Sr., 72, beloved husband of Amorite Kelly Strole departed, Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006 for his eternal home.

He was born in Chadbourn on Dec. 11, 1933, the son of the late Forest L. Strole and Pauline Dyson Strole. Strole was preceded in death by his son, Larry G. Strole Jr. and a sister, Anne Strole Nichols.

He served his country as a member of the United States Army. After discharge from service, he worked for a number of years as a retail parts store manager and master mechanic.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8 at the Whiteville Church of God with the Rev. Russell Kinlaw officiating. Burial will follow in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors other than his wife are four children, Sharon Smith, Terry Strole, Lyndall Strole and wife, Lynn Strickland Strole, and Gannon Strole, all of Whiteville; six grandchildren, Kris McQueen, Larry Strole III and wife, Nikki Church Strole, Morgan McCumbee, Hali McCumbee and Samantha McCumbee, all of Whiteville, and Amanda Strole of Bladenboro; a great-grandson, Elijah Strole of Whiteville; two brothers, David F. Strole of Cape Carteret, Rev. James L. Strole of Whiteville; two sisters, Cleona Strole Thompson of Wilmington, and Barbara Strole Starceski of Virginia Beach, Va.

Visitation will be Thursday night at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m.

 

LLOYD BATTEN

WHITEVILLE -- Lloyd Batten, 83, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006 at his residence.

Memorial service will be held Saturday at Whiteville United Methodist Church. McKenzie Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
