Wilcox watch

Chris Wilcox

Former Whiteville High and University of Maryland star Chris Wilcox scored a game-high 20 points for the Seattle SuperSonics in their 110-91 Tuesday night loss to the San Antonio Spurs in San Antonio. The 6-foot-10 Wilcox connected on 7-of-10 shots from the field and was 6-for-6 from the foul line as the Sonics dropped their fourth loss to the Spurs in as many games this season. The loss put the Sonics’ National Basketball Association record at 30-43. They played Wednesday night at New Orleans. Wilcox has started all but one game this season and is the only Sonic who has played in every game. He is averaging 13.2 points and 7.7 rebounds. The 24-year-old Wilcox, who paced Coach Glenn McKoy’s Whiteville High squad to the 1999 state 2A championship, is now in his fifth season in the NBA.

Just four days after helping pace the University of Maryland Terrapins to a 64-52 victory over Indiana for the 2002 NCAA Basketball championship in Atlanta, former Whiteville High basketball star Chris Wilcox returns to Columbus County to help kick off the Relay For Life Festivities at the WHS track. Two months later, Wilcox becomes the first round draft pick of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers.
