TERESA WILLIAMSON FERGUSON
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Teresa Williamson Ferguson passed away Saturday, March 31, 2007, after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edna Hines and Tracy Williamson, and brother-in-law, Paul Elmore.
A native and lifelong resident of Newport News, Ferguson was a graduate of Ferguson High School and Christopher Newport University.
Ferguson retired from the City of Newport News as a Deputy City Clerk after six years of service. She was a dedicated cheerleading mom for the Menchville Mighty Warriors and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
Private services were held. Peninsula Funeral Home of Newport News, Va. handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Ashleigh and Katie Ferguson; three sisters, Mary P. Drake of Conway, S.C., Betty Elmore and Frances Rivera, both of Newport News, Va.; one niece and five nephews; a uncle, G.F. Hines of Whitevillle, and two aunts, LaRue Dorset of Clarkton, and Marlon Tedder of Hallsboro.
FAIR BLUFF -- Rowland Leo Herring, 76, died Monday, April 2, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was a native of Columbus County the son of the late John Rowland and Minnie Ivey Herring. He was a retired police officer and had served as the chief of the Chadbourn Police Department. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Herring Herring.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 5 (today), at Meares Funeral Home with Dr. Ray Lundy and Rev. Tim Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie Meares Herring of the home; two sons, Bennie Leo Herring of Philomath, Ore., and Glenn Herring of Clayton; two daughters, Linda Herring Elvington of Leland, and Rusty Herring Waddell of Fair Bluff; a brother, David Moore of Whiteville; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

CERRO GORDO -- Ernest Ray Hayes, 50, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was the son of the late Julius Manley “Buddy” Hayes.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.
He is survived by his mother, Allene Soles Martin of Chadbourn; a sister, Martha Faye Barnhill of Whiteville; two brothers, Franklin “Tom” Hayes of Evergreen, and Julius Francis “Joe” Hayes of Whiteville.
CHADBOURN -- Harold J. “Rusty” Nealey, 59, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at Faytetteville.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn.
Survivors include his two sons, Troy J. Nealey and Jason J. Nealey, both of Sarasota, Fla.; sisters Margaret Louise Silva of Costa Rica and Marie N. Doan of Chadbourn; brothers, Thomas Elroy “Bill” Nealey of Sumter, S.C., Joe B. Nealey of Garden City, S.C., Jerry Nealey of Monroe, and Guaran Lee “Tony” Nealey of Chadbourn; and a grandchild.
ASH -- Albert Boyd Evans, 66, died Saturday, March 31, 2007. Born in Brunswick County on May 7, 1940 he was a son of the late A.E. “Sonny” and Hattie Elnita Register Evans.
Evans was employed by National Spinning Company in Whiteville for the past 47 years. He was a charter member of the former Waccamaw Lions Club, Shallotte Masonic #727 AF&AM, Brunswick Chapter #341, Eastern Star. Evans was chairman of the Brunswick County Planning Board and a former member of the Brunswick County Board of Health and was an independent insurance agent.
Final rites were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Myrtlehead Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and various other positions. Officiating were Reverends Jack Martin, Eugene Evans and Sterling Sarvis. Burial followed in the Myrtlehead Cemetery. Brunswick Funeral Home of Shallotte handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Frances “Frankie” Stocks Evans of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Boyd Ray and Lorrie Kay Knight Evans, Timothy and Kelly Evans, Keith and Lisa C. Evans, all of Ash; a brother, Marvin Evans of Ash; three sisters, Mabel Mooney of Bolivia, Carolyn Evans and Marie Milliken, both of Thomasville; and five grandchildren: Bryan Evans, Justin Evans, Samantha Evans, Hannah Evans and Brandon Evans.

WILSON -- Inez G. Spivey, 87, formerly of Brunswick, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007. She was born in Columbus County the daughter of the late Egbert and Elma Gore. She was the widow of Willard Spivey. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Whiteville.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Stephen Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Peacock’s Columbus Memorial Park. Peacock’s Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Jimmy Harrelson of Linwood; one grandchild, two great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Hollis, Ernest, Robert and Gene Gore; and sisters, Louise and Gladys Gore.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Friday, April 6 at the church.
FAIR BLUFF -- James Hubert Meares, 79, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at his residence. He was a native of Fair Bluff, the son of the late James Roland and Ethel Sealey Meares.
Meares was a member of Fair Bluff Baptist Church and was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War and a retired farmer. He was a member of Fair Bluff VFW Post 204 and was very active with the Fair Bluff Senior Citizens Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Meredith Williamson Meares; and two brothers, Quittie Meares and Norlie Meares.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Fair Bluff Baptist Church with Dr. Ray Lundy officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his son, James Hubert Meares Jr. and his wife Wendy S. Meares of Fair Bluff; his daughter, Becky M. Starr and her husband Gary Thomas Starr of Raleigh; three brothers, Ralph Meares of Tabor City, Russell Meares and Luther Meares, both of Fair Bluff; a sister, Kathleen Duncan of Monroe; five grandchildren, Rebecca Starr, Matthew Starr, and Brynn Starr, all of Raleigh; Josh Hammond and Taylor Meares, both of Fair Bluff.

WHITEVILLE -- Daniel J. “D.J.” Shelley died Monday, April 2, 2007 at his residence. He was the son of the late Daniel Bradley Shelley and Selena Mayfield Shelley. He was preceded in death by two sons, Roger Keith Shelley and Jerry Harold Dean Shelly.
Shelley was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church and served as Deacon Emeritus.
Final rites were held Wednesday, April 4, at Smyrna Baptist Church with the Rev. Ted Riedel officiating. Burial followed in the Shelley Family Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Esther Hinson Shelley of the home; two sons, DeLane Shelley and Wayne Shelley, both of Whiteville; a daughter, Dixie S. Nobles of Whiteville; a sister, Verona S. Seel of Charleston, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

DEACON ELWOOD ‘R.C.’ BELLAMY
TABOR CITY -- Deacon Elwood “R.C.” Bellamy, 75, died on Friday, March 30, 2007, at his residence. He was the son of the late Walter and Pinkie Bellamy.
Final rites were conducted Tuesday, April 3, at St. Stephen Holiness Church in Tabor City with the Pastors Nathan Gause and Antwon Bellamy officiating. Burial followed in the Butler Cemetery, Tabor City. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Bellamy of the home; his children, Linwood “Mack” Bellamy, Walter “Joe” Bellamy, Sherlle Bellamy, Connie Brothers, and Iris Bellamy, all of Tabor City.
WHITEVILLE -- Alex W. “E.C.” McClellan, 71, died Saturday, March 31, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Final rites were held Thursday, April 5, at Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Henry Jones Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the McClellon Family Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Loris E. McClellon; two daughters, Tammy McClellon of Whiteville, and LaTanya Pattillo of Chadbourn; two sons, Tharon McClellon of Philadelphia, Pa., and Alex McClellon of Elizabethtown.
BOLTON -- Joseph E. Mitchell, 77, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at his residence. He was a veteran of the United States Army, retired.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Mt. Hebron AME Zion Church in Hallsboro with the Rev. Vincent Meares officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the Restwell Cemetery #1. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Velma Little of Greensboro and Zelda Mitchell-Grady of Wilmington; three sons, Joseph R. Mitchell of Vero, Fla., Frederick D. Mitchell of Germantown, Md., and Wayne Mitchell of Bolton; four sisters, Ester Hall, Doris Moore, Gloria Askew, and Janice Bryant, all of Hallsboro; two brothers, O’Neil Mitchell of Leland, and Alton Mitchell of Clarkton.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Thursday (today) from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Friday from 1-2 p.m., and there will be no viewing after the service.
BLADENBORO -- Lena B. Hines, 79, died Friday, March 30, 2007, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Lumberton.
Final rites were held Wednesday, April 4, at St. Luke AME Zion Church with the Rev. Ivan Morton officiating. Burial followed in the Brooklyn Memorial Gardens. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Walter R. Hines; three daughters, Gloria Perry of Elizabethtown, Deborah Peterson of Bladenboro, and Elizabeth Hines of Lumberton; three sons, Walter Hines Jr. and Earl Hines, both of Bladenboro, and Christopher Hines of Red Springs.
HALLSBORO -- Mary Lou Williams, 95, died Thursday, March 28, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at Second St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Bryant officiating. Burial will follow in the Hallsboro Memorial Park. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Vilena Hill of Washington, D.C.
Viewing will be at the funeral home on Friday, April 6 from noon until 8 p.m. Viewing will be at the church Saturday following the service.
There will be a wake Friday, April 6 from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.
WHITEVILLE -- Rachel Hill, 82, died Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
Final rites were held Wednesday, April 4, at Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Henry Jones Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the Cherry Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
