OBITUARIES

TIM R. GORE

LAKE WACCAMAW -- Tim R. Gore, 78, formerly of the Pireway community died Saturday, April 14, 2007, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born April 2, 1929 in Albemarle, he was a son of the late Sinclare and Doras N. Gore Sr.

Gore was educated in Columbus County schools and served in the United States Army and the United States Air Force (1946-1953) during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He served 52 months on foreign soil including Japan, Korea and the Phillipines.

He was a member of the Pireway community and a tobacconist. He was a USDA tobacco inspector. He was also a consultant for T.S. Ragsdale in Lake City, S.C. and most recently employed by Diamon Processing in Danville, Va. Through his many years in the tobacco industry. Gore was admired as an individual as well as for his knowledge of tobacco. Gore was an avid golfer and shared his passion for the game with many family members, friends and co-workers. Gore was a faithful member of Olyphic Baptist Church where he was a choir member and served on many committees.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Olyphic Baptist Church with Reverends Charles Bullock and J.M. Gore with burial following in the church cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine G. Gore; daughters, Caroline Verette Hickman and husband, Charles (Hoss) of Lake Waccamaw, Lynnette G. McLeon and a husband, Larry of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a grandson, Joshua D. Blackburn of Whiteville; a great-grandson, Caleb Clark Blackburn; many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

He was preceded in death by his only granddaughter, Amanda L. McLeod, his brother, Doras N. Gore Jr. and his sister, Betty Gore Gause.

The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, April 16 (today) at the funeral home.

GREGORY DALE WILLIAMSON

CHADBOURN -- Gregory Dale Williamson, 56, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Bladen County Hospital, Elizabethtown. He was the son of the late Emory L. Williamson and owner and operator of Williamson’s Vinyl Siding.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Williamson’s Crossroads Baptist Church with the Rev. Linzy Nance officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Jackie W. Duncan and her husband, Mike of Chadbourn; a son, Andy S. Miller and fiancée, Kelly of Evergreen; his mother, Ruby W. Williamson of Chadbourn; brothers, Jesse L. Williamson of Morganton and Arnold “Pete” Williamson and his wife, Gayle of Chadbourn; a granddaughter, Laney Duncan; and a special friend, Margaret Hammond of Lake Waccamaw.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Benton, Carl Hardin, Milton Hardin, Curtis Pinyan, Randy Powell, and Tony Williamson.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday (today) at the funeral home.

CECIL BELL SPAULDING

CLARKTON -- Cecil Bell Spaulding, 97, died Wedneday, April 11, 2007, at Linkhaw Nursing Home in Lumberton. She was a farmer.

Final rites was held Saturday, April 14, at Rehobeth AME Zion Church, Rehobeth Church Road, Clarkton with Pastor Jonas Freeman officiating. Burial followed in the Mitchell Field Cemetery, Clarkton.

Survivors include four daughters, Doris S. Thompson of Lumberton, Annie M. Spaulding, Lula S. Peacock, and Elizabeth S. Alexander, all of Clarkton.

LETHA ELIZABETH WARD WHITE

CHADBOURN -- Letha Elizabeth Ward White, 94, died Monday, April 16, 2007, at her residence. She was the widow of Dewitt White and the daughter of the late Willie A. and Clemmie Scott Ward.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Worthington Funeral Home with the Reverends Hubert Herring and Joey Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth M. White and his wife, Rena of Chadbourn; three daughters, Freida W. Dew and her husband Junior of Hallsboro, Alice Faye W. Pope and her husband Morris of Ash; and Brenda W. Nobles and her husband, Laverne of Chadbourn; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 17 at the funeral home.

ROBERT ALLEN BELLAMY II

CHADBOURN -- Robert Allen Bellamy II died Saturday, April 14, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

Arrangements will be announced by Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Survivors include his mother, Alice Bellamy of Chadbourn; his father, Robert Allen Bellamy I of Chadbourn; two sisters, Regina B. Mason of Whiteville, and Andaraka D. Bellamy of Charlotte.

Friends may visit the family at 95 Vaught Square in Chadbourn. (See story page 1)

WINNIE MAE BROWN SIMMONS

CHADBOURN -- Winnie Mae Brown Simmons, 74, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Liberty Commons Nursing Center, Whiteville. She was the daughter of the late Jay and Sallie Britt Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lamar Simmons and a son, Kennith Wayne “Bubble” Simmons.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her son, Hilton Simmons and his wife Doris of the home; two granddaughters, Ashleigh Simmons Nobles and her husband Matt of Chadbourn and Crystal Simmons Butler and her husband Jason of Clarendon; five great-grandchildren, Logan Kennith-Jay Nobles, Lindsey Paige Ward, Austin Charles Butler, Tiffany Butler, and Travis Carl Butler.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday, April 16 (tonight) at the funeral home at 795 Main Street, Fair Bluff.

GERTRUDE STRICKLAND ELLIOTT

CHADBOURN -- Gertrude Strickland Elliott, 83, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Dovie Connor Strickland.

Final rites were held 3 p.m. Sunday, April 15 at Worthington Funeral Home with Rev. Tim Moore officiating.  Interment followed in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery.  Worthington Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Surviving family include her husband, William Austin Elliott of the home; a daughter, Debbie E. Green of Chadbourn; a sister, Alene S. Skovgard of Vista, Calif.;  brothers, Billy Strickland of Evergreen, O.B. Strickland of Cerro Gordo, Dewey Strickland of Cerro Gordo, and Cleveland “Jim” Strickland of Ontario, Canada.

WHITEVILLE -- Rev. Thomas L. McDonald, 81, died Friday, April 13, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

BOLTON -- William Jenkins Jr., 75, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

WHITEVILLE -- Lettie G. McClain died Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Premier Living, Lake Waccamaw.

MEARL DEAN LINKER

CONCORD -- Mearl Dean Linker, 70, died Thursday, April 12, 2007, at NorthEast Medical Center. She was born in Columbus County. She was a self-employed truck driver.

Final rites were held Sunday, April 15, at Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel. Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Michael S. Linker of the home; a son, James E. Woody of Gold Hill; a daughter, Kathie W. Roach of Whiteville; a brother, James Bullard of Holly Ridge; three sisters, Margaret Thompson, Joyce Ward, and Elvere Shaw, all of Whiteville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by his father, Zeb Bullard and mother, Hannie Barnhill Bullard.

LUTTIE NORRIS

TABOR CITY -- Luttie Norris, 86, died Wednesday, April 11, 2007. She was the widow of Wayland H. Norris. Born in Horry County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late George Samuel Johnson and Flora Miller Johnson. Norris was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Army.

Final rites were held Saturday, April 14, at the Inman Chapel with the Rev. Lloyd Williamson officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery with full military honors. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, David Harrelson of Clarendon, Walker Harrelson of Lexington, and Randy Norris of Tabor City; two daughter, Lanelle Strickland of Loris, S.C., and Betty Mathis of Pleasant Garden; two brothers, Maryland Johnson and Bobby Johnson, both of Loris, S.C.; five sisters, Velma Strickland, Eunice Cox and Myrtle Holmes, all of Loris, S.C.; Peggy Alceon Gore of Thomasville, and Virginia Smith of Lumberton; a half sister, June Rodham of Conway, S.C.; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
