OBITUARIES

VIOLA ELAM SMITH

BLADENBORO -- Viola Elam Smith, 94, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of Richard Fuller and Sarah Victoria Roberts Elam of Kings Mountain, Cleveland County.

Smith was active in community and civic affairs including the Western Prong Cooperative Extension Club as well as county and state Cooperative Extension activities and offices. She received numerous awards for her civic and club work including being named Woman of the Year. She served as a member of the Brunswick Electric Membership Women’s Committee for a number of years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bladenboro, having taught Sunday School and been a choir member for more than fifty years.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, Eugene McKenzie Smith and her parents, Richard Fuller and Sarah Victoria Roberts Elam.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 20, at First Baptist Church of Bladenboro. Burial will follow in the Pinecrest Cemetery. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Richard K. Smith of Whiteville and E. McKenzie Smith Jr. of Chadbourn; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at the church at 2 p.m. Friday, April 20 before the funeral service.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Bladenboro Building Fund, P.O. Box 176, Bladenboro, N.C. 28320.

CHARLES WAYNE TODD

GOLDSBORO --Charles W. Todd, 70, died Monday, April 16, 2007, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Born in Columbus County, he was the son of the late L.D. and Eva Faircloth Todd.

Todd retired from AP Parts. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 11, served as Post Adjutant for four years and was active in the American Legion Baseball Program and the American Legion 40-8 for 10 years. He was also a lifetime member of the NRA.

Memorial services were held Monday, April 16, at Brodgen United Methodist Church with the Rev. Al Sullivan officiating. Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home of Goldsboro handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Janice S. Todd; four step-sons, Danny Sullivan of Goldsboro, Rev. Wade “Al” Sullivan of Dudley, Gary Sullivan of Beautancus and Randy Sullivan of Rosewood; a daughter, Cathy Pennington of Grantham; two sisters, Janice Wilkerson of Fremont, and Faye Roberts of Lumberton; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Brogden United Methodist Church-Building Fund, 2918 U.S. 117 South, Dudley, N.C. 28333.

JAMES EDWARD NIXON

EVERGREEN -- James Edward Nixon, 66, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at his residence.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

RONNIE HAMMONDS JR.

EVERGREEN -- Ronnie Hammonds Jr., 48, died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements will be announced by S&L Funeral Home of Fair Bluff.

The family will receive friends at 8598 Haynes Lennon Highway, Evergreen.

REV. THOMAS L. ‘T.L.’ McDONALD

WHITEVILLE -- Rev. Thomas L. “T.L.” McDonald, 81, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Final rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Rose Hill AME Zion Church with the Rev. Bardy Ballard. Burial will follow in the George Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita McDonald of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, Betty Tyndall of Wilmington; and a sister, Emma Mae Pridgen of Whiteville.

Viewing will be at Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville Thursday (today) from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday, April 20 from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Viewing will be at the church Friday, April 20 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and again following the service.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Emma Mae Pridgen, 14-E Pridgen Boulevard in Whiteville.

WILLIAM JENKINS JR.

BOLTON -- William Jenkins Jr., 75, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Friendship AME Church. Burial will follow in the Restwell Cemetery #1. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three daughters, Claudette Hoffman and Patricia Jones, both of Bolton, and June Munn of Riegelwood; three sons, Ronald Jenkins of Southport, Terry Jenkins of Clinton, Md., and Michael Jenkins of Bolton.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Thursday (today) from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday, April 20 from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Friday from noon until 1 p.m. and again following the service.

Friends may visit the family at 417 Green Swamp Road, Bolton or 135 Loop Lane, Bolton.

DAVID FRANKLIN ROCKWELL

WHITEVILLE -- David Franklin Rockwell, 51, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at his residence. He was the son of William Russell Rockwell and Susie Hammonds Rockwell.

Rockwell worked as a service technician at Wells Oldsmobile for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Whiteville Jaycees for many years.

Final rites were held Monday, April 16, at Brunswick Baptist Church with the Reverends Merle Johnson and Ray Yow officiating. Burial followed in the Flynn Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangments.

Survivors include a sister, Deborah Rockwell of Whiteville; five brothers, Furney Soles of Autryville, William Rockwell and Dale Rockwell, both of Whiteville, Danny Rockwell of Orrum, and Ronnie Rockwell of Evergreen.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

LETTIE G. McCLAIN

WHITEVILLE -- Lettie G. McClain died Sunday, April 15, 2007, at Premier Living, Lake Waccamaw. She was a homemaker.

Final rites will be held at noon Saturday, April 21, at St. James AME Church with the Rev. J.A. Richburg. Burial followed in the Millican Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Viewing will be at the church Saturday from 11 a.m. until noon, and there will be no viewing after the service.

ROBERT L. PAYNE

CHADBOURN -- Robert L. Payne, 54, died Friday, April 6, 2007. Born on Oct. 11, 1952 in Loris, S.C., he was the son of Ruby L. Spivey and the late Robert L. Payne.

A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Myrtle Green Cemetery, Tabor City with the Rev. Bobby Cartrette officiating. Lee Funeral Home of Little River/North Myrtle Beach is handling the arrangements.

JAMES ROBERT ‘JIMMY’ MARLOWE

LELAND -- James Robert “Jimmy” Marlowe, 68, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 17, 2007.

Marlowe was a retired supervisor from International Paper Company. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #319, A.F.&A.M., and was in the Arab Shrine Club, the Eastern Star and was the conductor of the Shriner’s Choo-Choo train.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Supply Chapel of Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home with Masonic Rites by Masonic Lodge #1319, A.F. & A.M. and the Rev. Chris Hall.

The family will receive friends immedately following the services.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605-4277.

ROBERT ALLEN BELLAMY II

CHADBOURN -- Robert Allen Bellamy II, 35, died Saturday, April 14, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 20, at First Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Lionel E. Cartwright officiating. Burial will follow in the Belvue Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his mother, Alice Williams Bellamy of Chadbourn; his father, Robert Allen Bellamy I of Chadbourn; two sisters, Regina B. Mason of Whiteville, and Andraka D. Bellamy of Charlotte; his grandmother, Lena Williams of Chadbourn; his grandfather, Elder Lonie B. Williams of Maiden.

Friends may visit the family at 95 Vaught’s Square in Chadbourn.

Viewing will be on Thursday from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to services at the church. No viewing will be held after the service.
