OBITUARIES

ROY ‘STEVE’ STEVEN
BRITT

WHITEVILLE -- Roy “Steve” Steven Britt, 46, formerly of Charlotte died Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare after an extended illness. He was the son of the late Roy Lee Britt and Betty Dawsey Britt of Chadbourn.

Britt was a graduate of West Columbus High School, class of 1979 and a graduate of UNC-Wilmington. Steve taught at Conway Middle School for 10 years and also in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public School System for 10 years until his retirement. He was a member of Chadbourn United Methodist Church.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Worthington Funeral Home with Reverends Ted Riedel and Hubert McCleney officiating. Interment will follow in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Surviving family include his mother, Betty Dawsey Britt of Chadbourn; two sisters, Karen J. Britt and Angela L. Britt, both of Chadbourn; and caregiver, Ramon R. Wix of Whiteville.

Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

ALBERT BOYD EVANS

ASH -- Albert Boyd Evans, 66, died Saturday, March 31, 2007. Born in Brunswick County on May 7, 1940 he was a son of the late A.E. “Sonny” and Hattie Elnita Register Evans.

Evans was employed by National Spinning Company in Whiteville for the past 47 years. He was a charter member of the former Waccamaw Lions Club, Shallotte Masonic #727 AF&AM, Brunswick Chapter #341, Eastern Star. Evans was chairman of the Brunswick County Planning Board and a former member of the Brunswick County Board of Health and was an independent insurance agent.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Myrtlehead Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and various other positions. Officiating will be Reverends Jack Martin, Eugene Evans and Sterling Sarvis. Burial will follow in the Myrtlehead Cemetery. Brunswick Funeral Home of Shallotte is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Frances “Frankie” Stocks Evans of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Boyd Ray and Lorrie Kay Knight Evans, Timothy and Kelly Evans, Keith and Lisa C. Evans, all of Ash; a brother, Marvin Evans of Ash; three sisters, Mabel Mooney of Bolivia, Carolyn Evans and Marie Milliken, both of Thomasville; and five grandchildren: Bryan Evans, Justin Evans, Samantha Evans, Hannah Evans and Brandon Evans.

JAMES A. LEWIS

ALAMO, Texas -- James A. Lewis, 76, died Thursday, March 15, 2007, of a motorcycle accident. He was born Aug. 8, 1930 in Bladenboro. He was the son of the late Ned Lewis and Dena D. Russ of Whiteville.

Lewis graduated from Chadbourn High School. He served in the Coast Guard from July 1949 to November 1969 and served during the Korean and the Vietnam wars. After his retirement from the Coast Guard, he worked for Ford Motor Company in Avon Lake, Ohio for more than 25 years as a pipe fitter.

Final rites were held Tuesday, March 20, at the Nomad Shrine Club with full military rites. Burial followed at the RGV State Veterans Cemetery in Mission, Texas.

Survivors include his wife Laura Lewis of Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico, his sister, Ann Cook of Whiteville; his stepsons, Chayanne Ernesto Sanchez Cantu, Leigh Bradley, both of Clarksville, Tenn.; and Scott D. Bradley of Amherst, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Emily Hooker of Orlando, Fla.; six step-grandchildren.

RODNEY CHAD BUFFKIN

TABOR CITY -- Rodney Chad Buffkin, 23, died Thursday, March 29, 2007, in Sumter, S.C. He was born in Columbus County, the son of Rodney Chad Buffkin and Kimberly Mills Buffkin Parker.

Final rites were held Saturday, March 31, at the Inman Chapel with the Rev. Donald Spivey officiating. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his parents, Rodney Buffkin of Knoxville, Tenn. and Kim Parker of Tabor City; his wife, Amanda Garrell; a son, Timothy Chad Buffkin of Tabor City; his stepfather, Timmy Parker of Tabor City; a brother, Eric Parker of Tabor City; a half-brother, Justin Martin of Loris, S.C.; a stepsister, Kelly Buffkin of Yucca Valley, Calif.; two stepbrothers, Daylon Parker and Robbie Parker, both of High Point; paternal grandmother, Virginia Buffkin of Tabor City; maternal grandparents, Ted and Phyllis Mills of Tabor City.

JACK F. SASSER,
SFFC USARET

LIVE OAK, Fla. -- Jack F. Sasser, SFFC USARET, 74, formerly of Oak Island and the Old Dock community, died Friday, March 30, 2007. He was born Nov. 24, 1932 in Columbus County, the son of the late Lewis Gordon Sasser and Anne Simmons Sasser.

Sasser was a veteran of the United States Army. He served two tours in the Korean War and one tour in the Vietnam War. He retired after 20 years of service. He owned and operated Harbor House Boat Marina, restaurant and hotel in Oak Island. He was commander of the Oak Island VFW and a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Oak Island Moose Club and a member of the Lions Club in Live Oak, Fla.

Final rites with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Palmyra Baptist Church with the Rev. Oscar Hullander officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Jordan Sasser; three sons, Danny Sasser of Boiling Spring Lakes, Jimmy Sasser and Tommy Sasser, both of Sunset Beach; a daughter, Jackie Sasser Long of Newport News, Va.; a sister, Lilly Mitchell of Wilson; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 at the funeral home.

WHITEVILLE -- Daniel J. “D.J.” Shelley died Monday, April 2, 2007 at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville.

CHAPMAN

BOLTON -- Mary Ellen Hinson Chapman, 69, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Napolean Littles and Julia Roberts. She attended Cheerful Hope Baptist Church.

A graveside service was held Sunday, April 1, at Shiloh Methodist Church Cemetery, Bolton with the Rev. Larry Ward officiating. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arranements.

Survivors include her husband, William L. Chapman of Bolton; four sons, Cecil Britt and Rex Hinson, both of Bolton, McNeil Hinson of Walterboro, S.C., and Jimmy Hinson of Winnabow; three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE -- Rachel Hill, 82, died Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

Friends may visit the family at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Davis, 756 Bitmore Road, Whiteville.

WHITEVILLE -- Alex W. “E.C.” McClellan, 71, died Saturday, March 31, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

MURPHY W. PIERCE

HALLSBORO -- Murphy W. Pierce, 87, died Friday, March 30, 2007, at Liberty Commons in Whiteville. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 6, at New Light Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Franklin Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the Hallsboro Memorial Park. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Minister Barbara P. Powell of Hallsboro; three sons, Willie Blue of Sanford, David Pierce of Petersburg, Va., and Murphy Pierce Jr. of Norwalk, Conn.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Thursday, April 5 (today) from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Friday from noon until 1 p.m., and there will be no viewing after the service. Friends may visit the family at 75 Valley Lane in Hallsboro.

LILLIE RUTH JOHNSON

WHITEVILLE -- Lillie Ruth Johnson, 78, died Thursday, March 29, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was a resident of Liberty Commons.

A memorial service was held Saturday, March 31, at Peoples Funeral Chapel in Whiteville. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Keith Nealy of Bath, N.Y.

HALLSBORO -- Mary Lou Williams, 95, died Thursday, March 28, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.
