‘Wright’ foot

Whiteville High first baseman Michael Wright comes down on the bag after going high to snag a throw and nip a Ballston Spa, N.Y., baserunner in Saturday’s high school baseball game at Legion Stadium. The visiting New York squad topped the Wolfpack 4-2. On Friday, Wright pitched a one-hitter in Whiteville’s 7-0 Waccamaw Conference shutout over Heide Trask.

Wright fires
one-hitter in
WHS victory
over Trask

Whiteville High lefthander Michael Wright gave up a triple to the first batter he faced Friday night, but held the Trask Titans hitless the rest of the way in the Wolfpack’s 7-0 Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference baseball victory at Legion Stadium.

Whiteville’s season record now stands at 9-2, including a 4-0 mark in Waccamaw Conference play.

The Wolfpack had 10 hits for the evening, including three by Daquan Gaddy and two by Charlie Gore.

Whiteville scored single runs in the first, second and third innings and added two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.

Wright, who struck out 11 batters, moved his season pitching record to 4-0 as he threw the Wolfpack’s second straight one-hit shutout. On Tuesday, Robbie Penny pitched a one-hitter in a 4-0 road victory over South Brunswick.

Winn knocked the lead-off triple for Trask while Foy was the losing pitcher.

Trask, which was coming off a 4-2 home-field win over East Columbus last Tuesday, slipped to 2-2 in Waccamaw Conference play.

Coach Brett Harwood’s Whiteville team will travel to pay West Columbus tonight at 7 in a renewal of a baseball rivalry that began in 1966.
