Columbus County has no other grassroots event that unifies such a diverse cross section of people as does Relay for Life.
One in three people will be affected by cancer in their lifetimes. Ask most people what one of their greatest fears is, and they’ll say being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
That’s because cancer can be such a slow, insidious, painful and emotionally draining illness.
The Columbus County Relay for Life this past weekend on the campus of Southeastern Community College raised more than $120,000 for cancer research.
There are always people walking, communing and entertaining in and around the Relay for Life tent city and track. The event has a truly electric feel.
It is also an emotional 24 hours. Not only is it a time for cancer survivors to celebrate during the Survivor’s Lap, it is a time to remember and honor those who have suffered through this dreaded disease’s horrible effects.
The hope is that enough money can be raised to fund research that will ultimately find a cure for cancer.
Eradicating cancer is a huge hurdle to clear, but with the hundreds of Relays for Life going on this spring across the nation, people are doing their part to help.
It is a wonderful thing to see so many in Columbus County joining together to show how much they care, and how much they want to help end others’ suffering.
