Columbus All-Stars avenge loss to Virginia, advance to semi-finals

FLORENCE, S.C. - For the second straight day, the Columbus County All-Stars went to work with the bats as they posted a 15-5 victory over Goochland, Va., Tuesday in the fourth round of the 2007 Dixie Majors (ages 15-19) World Series at the South Florence High School Field.

The game was halted in the sixth inning by the 10-run rule as the Columbus team nabbed its third straight win.

The win avenged a 9-4 loss to the Virginia team in the opening round of the 12-team, double-elimination World Series Tournament.

The North Carolina champion Columbus County team went against the host Florence team in Wednesday night’s semi-finals. (See result in A-section). The winner advanced to today’s championship round. Wednesday’s other semi-final had unbeaten Auburn, Ala., taking on Polk County, Fla.

Columbus County had eliminated Laurel, Miss., 12-7 in third-round play.

“For the last two games, we’ve just come out and hit the ball extremely well,” said Joey Autry, who coaches the team along with T.J. Spivey. “Our guys have really been focused at the plate.”

Justin “Grasshopper” Ward went 4-for-4 and DeMichael Smith powered a home run for the North Carolina champs, who battled back from a 3-0 first inning deficit.

Devon Brown, Scott Stephens, Ryan McCleney and Cory Duncan each had two hits.

Jeremy Harrelson was the winning pitcher after coming on in relief in the first inning. Corey Sawyer pitched the fifth and sixth innings.

In Monday’s 12-7 win over Mississippi, Dusty Duncan went the distance on the mound and the North Carolina bats showed up in a big way.

Ryan McCleney had three hits, including a home run, and Scott Stephens went 4-for-4.

Justin Ward rapped three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Devon Brown and Zack Andrews had two hits each.
