WHITEVILLE -- Mabel Johnson Wingfield, 89, died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Liberty Commons Nursing Facility. She was born in Cerro Gordo on Sept. 8, 1917 to Dr. Floyd Johnson and Ursula Singleton Johnson. When she was three the family moved to Whiteville where her father served as health officer of Columbus County for 40 years. She graduated from Peace College and Duke University and was a member of the Whiteville United Methodist Church.
In 1939 she became society editor of The News Reporter. After a couple of years she wanted to try something different so she was hired as a recreational hostess for the Atlantic Coast Line Florida. Specials from New York to Florida with the advent of the United States in World War II. The Luxury Trains ceased to run so she returned to North Carolina and became secretary to the Chief Health Education Consultant for the United States Public Health Services, who was establishing an office in Chapel Hill. Her wedding to Carol Clark Wingfield, who was serving in the United States Navy, took place Jan. 5, 1944, in the Duke Chapel. When he left for the Pacific. She returned to The News Reporter and war time activities. Altogether she was with the paper for five years. She was a charter member of the North Carolina Press Women and was appointed chair woman of the Woman’s Division of Columbus County for the War Finance Program during the sixth and seventh war bond drive.
When her husband was discharged they settled in Lynchburg, Va. He died in 1981 and she returned to her mother in the family home in Whiteville. Her mother died five months later. After five years of living alone, she moved to Heritage Place Retirement Home in Fayetteville where she stayed for 18 years.
As her health declined she felt like she needed further nursing care so she moved to Liberty Commons Nursing Facility in Whiteville.
A graveside service was held Wednesday, July 18, at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Hope Vickers officiating. McKenzie Mortuary handled the arrangements.
She is survived by two sons, Floyd Johnson Wingfield, his wife, Elizabeth of Beaufort, and Carol Clark Wingfield Jr. and wife, Martha of Lynchburg, Va.; grandchildren, Jeffrey Fritzinger, Chipman Collins and Carrie Collins, Christine Brodhagen, Kenneth Brodhagen and Carol Clark Wingfield III; great-grandchildren, Martha Preston, and Sallie Collins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Columbus Regional Healthcare System Foundation in memory of Mabel Johnson Wingfield.
F. BRUCE WILLIAMS
On Monday, July 16, 2007, F. Bruce Williams, 49, went home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Bruce was born in September, 1957 in Stamford, Conn. As a child, he loved sports, reading and he excelled in school studies. He was inducted into DeMoLay while in high school. He graduated from high school in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and shortly thereafter joined the U.S. Army where he served most of his enlistment as an air traffic controller in Germany.
Following military service, he studied Ancient History at the University of South Florida graduating summa cum laude. Having been accepted to Yale University, he chose Duke University School of Law for his graduate work. At the time of his passing, he was a partner with Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge and Rice. He was a member of the American Bar Association, North Carolina Bar Association, a former commissioner of the 14th Judicial Bar Association, and the North Carolina General Statutes Commission. His professional career was characterized by his intense devotion to the practice of law.
His family lineage was heavily populated with men and women of strong intellect, heavy political involvement, love of country, and artistic appreciation and talent. His father’s family included a trio of Lockwood brothers who, in 1640, immigrated to what is now Greenwich, Conn. Their descendants are still socially, economically and politically active in Greenwich.
His mother’s family is directly traced to America’s earliest settlers and those who greeted them upon their landing on the shores of Virginia. His ancestor, John Rolfe, is best known for marrying Pocohontas and furthering the colonial cause in the New World. His ancestors settled in Virginia making their mark upon American history including names such as: Cary, Harrison, Fairfax, Crocker, Adams etc. His great-grandfather, Francis Burton Harrison, as part of an illustrious political career, was appointed Governor-General of the Philippines for eight years. His maternal grandfather, Marius de Zayas, was an integral part of the international avant-garde art scene as an art critic and caricaturist.
He was predeceased by his father Frank L. Williams, and paternal grandparents, Frank H. Williams and Margaret Lockwood Williams, all from Norwalk, Conn.; also, his maternal grandparents, Marius de Zayas and Virginia Randolph Harrison de Zayas.
F. Bruce Williams was survived by a close, loving family including his devoted wife and soul mate, Barbara J. Hardee Williams, “Jeanne,” his mother A.V. de Zayas of Lutz, Fla.; sisters Barbara Lamphere and Mariela Hurst, both of Lutz, Fla.; and Patty Clements of Villa Rica, Ga. In addition, he is also survived by his loving mother-in-law, Martha Hardee of Fair Bluff, and his sisters-in-law Donna Hardee of Durham, and Fanny Hardee of Coral Springs, Fla.; nieces, Ana Lamphere and Mari Elena Morales, and his nephews Paul and Jamar Brown. And his beloved Boxers Lokee, Zelda and Sydney.
F. Bruce Williams was an intense patriot, sports enthusiast (Duke, Notre Dame and Green Bay) an avid golfer, devoted husband, and loving family man.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday (today), July 19, the chapel of Hall-Wynne Service.

IREDELL “I.M.” SCOTT
LUMBERTON -- Iredell Montgomery Scott, “I.M.,” 96, died peacefully Friday, July 13, 2007, in Lumberton.
He was born Nov. 20, 1910, the eldest son of the late Samuel Devon Scott and Eliza Janie Powell Scott. He spent his early years in Boardman, and later, the family permanently settled in Fair Bluff. I.M. was educated in the Fair Bluff and Whiteville schools and graduated in 1932 from Duke University.
After college, he returned to Fair Bluff to join his father and brothers in the family business.
On Oct. 15, 1938, he married Jewel (Judy) C. Cole of Elizabethtown. They made their home in Fair Bluff until the last few years when they moved to Wesley Pines Methodist Retirement Community in Lumberton.
Throughout his long life, I.M.’s interests centered around his family, business, church and community. He served actively in the Fair Bluff Methodist Church and sat on the board of the Methodist Children’s Home.
I.M. will be affectionately remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as an innovative businessman who inspired loyalty and respect for more than 50 years. He will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his devoted wife of 68 years, six children survive. They are Sondra Dale and husband Ralph Barnes of Winston-Salem, Carolyn Cole and husband Ken McLeod of Sumter, S.C., Cynthia Jane and husband Manuel Diaz of Murrell’s Inlet, S.C., David Bertram and wife Donna Scott of Lake Waccamaw, Cary Glyn and husband Robert Battle of Nichols, S.C., and Mary Ellen Scott and husband Stuart Bush of Doylestown, Pa. Eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. His two brothers Sam Scott Jr. and Charles A. Scott and one great-grandchild are predeceased. Other survivors include Jane Scott Bell of Tabor City, and Sarah Scott of Fair Bluff. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 21, at 2 p.m. at the Fair Bluff Methodist Church with the Rev. Neill Smith officiating. After the service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.
A private burial will be held at the Powell Cemetery for the wife, children and grandchildren of I.M. Scott.

CHADBOURN -- Jacqueline Jean Jordan, 65, died Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at his residence.

JOE CASH WESTBROOKS
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Joe Cash Westbrooks, 83, died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Spartanburg Medical Center, Spartanburg, S.C.
Born in Gaffney, he was the son of the late Carlisie Simpson Westbrooks and Lalie Bagwell Westbrooks. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Johnnie Sentell Westbrooks, who died in 1988.
After completing his education at Macedonia School in 1939, he started farming and worked in numerous other occupations through the years. These included cutting timber, saw milling, share cropping, textiles, public road work and construction. He was a member of New Heights Baptist Church.
Joe married Johnnie Mazie Sentell on January 19, 1946 and they had two children, Randy Gene Westbrooks and Nancy Jo Westbrooks Adkins. His deep and abiding Christian faith was shown as an avid Bible student, and he served as Sunday School teacher and church deacon for more than 30 years.
He enjoyed playing the guitar for friends and family and occasionally led the Westbrooks clan in performances around the community. He spent his entire life in sight of Thicketty Mountain.
In his later life, his personal memoirs were documented and published in a book called “Battleground Memories: Recollection of Rural Southern Life During the Great Depression.”
Final rites were held Wednesday, July 18, at New Heights Baptist Church with Reverends Sidney Norton, Dr. Christopher Osborn, Crys Champion and Jim Rice officiating. Burial followed in Frederick Memorial Gardens. Blakely Funeral Home of Gaffney, S.C. handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Westbrooks Adkins and husband Paul of Gaffney, S.C.; a son, Randy Gene Westbrooks and wife Rebecca of Whiteville; three grandchildren, Shana Harvey and husband Justin of Gaffney, S.C., Matthew Marks Westbrooks and wife Caroline, and John Marks Westbrooks all of Wilmington; two great-granddaughters, Landi and Lyndzi; two brothers, McCoy Westbrooks and Jimmy Westbrooks, both of Gaffney, S.C.; three sisters, Willine Evans, Millie Richards and Jeanette Sparks, all of Gaffney, S.C. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Albert Westbrooks, L.C. Westbrooks, Windred Westbrooks, and Bobby Westbrooks; and a sister, Sue Reynolds. WHITEVILLE -- Gail Creech Honeycutt, 46, died Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at Medical University Hospital in Charleston, S.C. A native of Columbus County, she was born April 30, 1961 the daughter of Thomas Creech and the late Carleen Barefoot Creech.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Peacock’s Chapel In The Pines of Whiteville.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Honeycutt; a daughter, Misty Harris of the home; her father, Thomas Creech of Whiteville; three brothers, David Beckom of Eston, Maine, Carl Beckom and Robert Beckom of Lexington; a sister, Aline Creech Davis of Whiteville; and a grandchild.

LONGS, S.C. -- James Ralph Huggins, 65, died Monday, July 16, 2007, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence, S.C.
Final rites were held Wednesday, July 18, at Living Water Baptist Church. Burial followed at Buck Creek Cemetery. Lee Funeral Home of Little River, S.C., handled the arrangements.
Born on June 22, 1942 in Loris, S.C. he was the son of Evata Shelley Huggins and the late Hicks Huggins.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father and Papa and member of Living Water Baptist Church. He was a farmer and loving caregiver for his mother and father.
Survivors include his mother, Evata Shelley Huggins; his wife of 44 years, Deborah Faye Huggins of Longs, S.C.; a daughter, Bebe Porter and husband Mark of Longs, S.C; two brothers, Phil Huggins and wife Jeannette of Longs, S.C., and Larry Huggins of Nichols, S.C.; three grandchildren, Blake, Macey, Brenyn and angel, Meredith Grace Porter. He is predeceased by a sister, Rebecca Branton.

BOLTON -- Leta Freeman Jacobs, 91, died Monday, July 16, 2007, at her residence.
She was born October 28, 1915, in Bladen County, the daughter of the late Joe and Mary Moore Patrick. She was the widow of Sylvester Freeman and Lofton Jacobs.
She was a Sunday School teacher, church treasurer, and WMU worker at New Hope Baptist Church. She served as a 4-H volunteer leader and was a seamstress, farmer and gardener.
Final rites were held Wednesday, July 18, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Reverends Don Carter and Mike Jacobs officiating. Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include three sons, Cephas Freeman of Bolton, Gurney Freeman of New Bern, and Anthony D. Jacobs of Bolton; four daughters, Mary Arrator Jacobs of Bolton, Irene Young of Council, Joan Phyllis Murray of Wilmington, and Letress Hammonds of Lumberton; two sisters, Claire Kirksey of Lumberton and Viola Freeman of New Jersey; 27 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE -- Rachel Benton Taylor, 84, died Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late William Corbett Benton and Maggie Jolly Benton. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Lee Taylor.
She dedicated her life to caring for others. She was a nurse in Virginia, and retired after many years of service from Columbus County Hospital in Whiteville in 1987.
Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 20, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Reverends L. Kendell Cameron Jr. and Ronald Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Taylor Lee and husband Ronnie Lee of Whiteville; a brother, Roy Benton and wife Dorothy of Whiteville; a sister, Mildred Plant of Florida; two granddaughters, Mary Robin Lee and Elizabeth Hayden Ward; three great-grandsons, Seth Ward, Alan Ward and Garrett Stancil.
Visitation will be held Thursday (tonight), July 19, at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m.

HANAHAN, S.C. -- Betty Rose Jolly Inman, 77, formerly of Chadbourn, died Monday, July 16, 2007, at Roper St. Francis Healthcare in Charleston, S.C. She was the daughter of the late Walter Lee and Jessie Spivey Jolly.

EVERGREEN -- Mark Anthony Moore, 45, died Thursday, July 19, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late Charlie Layton Moore.

Doerre served in
the United States Marine Corp. during World War II.

be held at 8 a.m. Friday, July 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be held at 2:45 p.m. at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at 110 Montford Point Road, Jacksonville. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 20, at Love Grove Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Welches Creek Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda M. Troy of Whiteville and Helen M. Murphy of Temple Hills Md.
Friends may visit the family at the home of Ms. Brenda M. Troy, 2551 Millie-Christine Road, Whiteville.
Viewing will be from noon-8 p.m. Thursday (today) at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m.

TABOR CITY -- Inez Fipps, 79, died Monday, July 16, 2007, at Conway Medical Center, Conway, S.C. Born in Columbus County the daughter of the late Luther and Daisy Lewis Strickland. She was the widow of Perry Fipps.
Final rites were held Thursday, July 19, at Westside Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Forest Lawn Cemetery of Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, William “Teddy” Fipps of Aynor, S.C.; three sisters, Bernice Hanway of Tabor City, Lucille Sorrell of Wakefield Va., and Annie Mae Stockton of Diamond, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. |
