Scott Johnson, who has been the head baseball coach at Jacksonville High School the past two years, was selected this past week to the head baseball coaching position at Southeastern Community College. The 35-year-old Johnson replaces Joey Autry, who resigned recently after two seasons with the Rams. Autry has been named baseball coach at Harrells Christian Academy in Sampson County. Johnson, who received his bachelor’s degree at UNC-Wilmington and master’s degree from California State College of Maryland, said that coaching at the college level has been a major goal. “When I played at Lenoir Community College, the last game I pitched was against Southeastern,” he said. “I’ve been well aware of its baseball program for a long time, and I also know about the abundance of baseball talent in Columbus County and the surrounding area. Johnson, who will teach health and physical education at SCC, coached Jacksonville to the state 3A playoffs this past spring. Three of his senior players signed with college programs. He also helped coach the Jacksonville American Legion team. Johnson and his wife Jenny have two children.
