Gator girls, SBHS boys take Tuesday wins

LAKE WACCAMAW - The two-time defending Waccamaw 1A-2A Conference champion East Columbus Gator boys basketball team got off to a rough start in 2007-08 conference play Tuesday night, falling to visiting South Brunswick 44-40 after leading most of the way.

“We did a very good job defensively, but we struggled some on the offensive end,” said ECHS coach Clarence Ganus.

“We just didn’t take the shots we needed. We weren’t that aggressive when it came to attacking the basket.”

The Gators’ season record slipped to 2-6. They led 25-17 at the half before the Cougar squad rallied behind the play of A.J. Ferguson, Ervin Hall and Ryan Waldrep.

Ferguson bucketed 15 points while Hall had 10 and Waldrep nine.

B.J. Bracey led East Columbus scorers with 13 points, followed by Anthony Fields with 12.

The ECHS girls rolled to their seventh with in eight games by trouncing the Lady Cougars 66-30.

T.T. Bennett poured in 22 points and Jasmine Young had 19 to pace Coach Karlyn Stephens’ Lady Gators. Tabitha Moore tallied 12 points for ECHS, which led 37-18 at the half.

Christina Deveney led South Brunswick scorers with 17 points.
