SCHS to meet Lincolnton
in state finals on Saturday

The Lincolnton Wolves, who suffered four losses in their first five games, picked up their 10th straight win Friday in a 21-13 victory over Southern Piedmont Conference rival East Lincoln for the Western N.C. 2A Regional football championship.

Lincolnton and South Columbus will clash Saturday at 3:30 p.m., at N.C. State University’s Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.

While this will be South Columbus’ first-ever appearance in a state championship football game, Lincolnton is no stranger to the state finals, having lost to Clinton in the 2005 state 2A title game.

In 1993, the Wolves defeated Burlington Cummings for the state 2A title, and in 1994 they bowed to Wallace-Rose Hill in the state final.

Coach Scott Cloninger’s Lincolnton squad, the Southern Piedmont Conference champion, suffered its last loss on Sept. 14 when it fell to Shelby 35-13 in a non-conference clash. Shelby will take on unbeaten Reidsville in Saturday’s state 2AA championship at 8 p.m.,at Carter-Finley.

Lincolnton, now 11-4 for the season, entered the West 2A bracket as the No. 5 seed. It opened the playoffs with a 49-21 win over Mitchell, and followed up with a 35-3 thumping of Brevard in the second round. In the third round, the Wolves knocked off top-seeded Wilkes Central 29-26.
