Pender takes victories over SCHS

IBURGAW – Once again, it was close … but no cigar … for the South Columbus Stallion boys basketball team.

The host Pender Patriots topped the visiting Stallions 54-50 Tuesday night in a Waccamaw Conference game. The Patriots had taken a one-point win over SHCS in their earlier conference meeting.

The game was close all the way as South Columbus led 14-9 after one quarter and Pender held a 22-21 edge at the half. The Patriots took a 35-34 lead into the final period.

Rayford Hankins score 14 points to lead Pender, followed by Mike Sutton and Cruz Underwood with 12 each. The Patriots upped their conference record to 6-3.

Bryant Edwards rang up 16 points for South Columbus, which slipped to 1-8 in conference play and 4-15 overall.

Pender won the girls game 42-32 with Janetta Robinson scoring 14 points and Brittney Roper adding 12 for Pender, which now has a 6-3 record in conference play.

Yolanda McCoy and Amanda Dowe each scored 10 points for South Columbus, whose conference record slipped to 2-7.
