OBITUARIES

DOROTHY BRAZELLE SLAUGHTER

GREENSBORO -- Mary Dorothy Jinnette Brazelle Slaughter, left this earth, Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at Moses Cone Hospital.

Dot was born Wednesday, April 24, 1918, in Goldsboro, the second living child of the late John Carson and Anne Lillian Outland Jinnette. She also lived in Greensboro, Richmond, Va., and Nakina, and returned to Greensboro to spend her last years nearer her family. She was a loving mother, a wise and caring wife, best sister, dear aunt, and most thoughtful friend. She was a sharp, intelligent, capable lady with a light in her eye, a spark in her heart and she lived the work of God. All those who knew her will Miss Dot immensely. She gave her heart and love to us all, and we shall always have her endearing kindness and sweetness to remember her by. A lovelier lady never lived.

Her first husband, Stuart E. Brazelle (WWII) preceded Dot to heaven, as did her second husband Burton L. Slaughter, an infant sister Sarah Jinnette, her older brother Allen J. Jinnette and her youngest sister, Margaret J. Barrow.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service Chapel, with Deborah Suess, pastor of First Friends Meeting, officiating. Burial followed at Guilford Memorial Park. Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home of Greensboro handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her two sons and her daughter-in-law, S. Andrew Brazelle and his wife Beverley of Forty Fort, Pa., Rev. Michael A. Brazelle of Spruce Pine; stepdaughter, Virginia S. Arthur of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Stuart E. Brazelle II, Mack R. Brazelle, Jay Brazelle and his wife Eliza Diener-Brazelle; her younger sisters and brother-in-law, Ester J. Tilley, Ina Brower and her husband Doug; her dear and caring niece, Rebecca McGlothilin and her husband Roy, niece, Rae Bartlett and her husband Russ and a tremendous number of other nieces, nephews neighbors and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gateway Education Center, 3205 East Wendover Avenue, Greensboro, N.C. 27405-6433.

CAROLYN H. CAISON

WILMINGTON -- Carolyn Hathway Caison, 62, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, following an extended illness.

Caison was born Sept. 23, 1944, in Columbus County, the daughter of Albert Tilman and Gertrude Ward Hathway of Whiteville. She was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness Church.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the graveside in Hose Simmons and Cypress Creek Cemetery in the Old Dock community with Elder Leonard Johnson and Rev. Tim Cowan officiating. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home of Wilmington handled the arrangements.

Survivors besides her parents include her husband, Donald W. Caison of the home; her son, Dan and his wife Shirley Caison of Leland; her daughters, Trudy and her husband Woody Leonard of Winnabow, Toni and her husband Scot Fink of Westgate, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; and three sisters, Doretha Thompson and Joyce Long, both of Whiteville, and Mildred Benton of Wilmington.

BEVERLY ANN ELLIOTT

LUMBERTON -- Beverly Ann Elliott, 47, formerly of Chadbourn, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at her residence.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at First Missionary Baptist Church of Chadbourn with the Rev. Lionel Cartwright and Elder Allen Livingston officiating. Burial will follow at Belvue Cemetery, Chadbourn, D&A Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Cherish; a son, Anthony; five sisters, Rosalind Alderman, Nadine Antone, Carolyn, Jacquline and Saundra; three brothers, Craig Elliott, Keith Antone, Kevin Antone; maternal grandmother, Columbia Smith; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 2-7 p.m. Thursday (tonight) at the funeral home.

REV. VOLLIE ELRAY SMITH

SHALLOTTE -- Rev. Vollie Elray Smith, 72, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was born in Brunswick County on Oct. 24, 1934, the son of the late Cosby and Versie Smith.

Smith retired as pastor of Ash Freewill Baptist Church and in addition owned a small engine repair business. He has served in the United States Navy.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Old Shallotte Baptist Church with the Rev. Landis Alexander officiating. Burial followed at Smith cemetery, Ash. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service, Supply Chapel handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Iris G. Smith of the home; a son, Randy Smith and wife Carolyn; a daughter, Tammy Tetreault and husband Jim; four brothers, Paul, Bobby, Elray and J.B. Smith, all of shallotte; two sisters, Dora Blackman of Lake Waccamaw and Ester Tyler of Hallsboro; three grandchildren, Mark Smith, Shaun Smith and wife Anita, and Brandon Gore, and three great-grandchildren, Alex, Chase and Chaden Smith.

Casket bearers were Chris Smith, Dean Smith, Henry Gales, Reggie Smith, Roger Gales, and Kenny Smith.

MYRTLE WHITE HAYES

QUEENS, N.Y. -- Myrtle White Hayes, 66, formerly of Whiteville, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, in Queens.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

BETTY JONES CARTRETTE

WHITEVILLE -- Betty Jane Jones Cartrette, 67, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2006, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born in Columbus County April 12, 1939 the daughter of the late Willie H. and Fannie Lowery Jones.

Cartrette formerly co-owned and operated What-A-Burger in Whiteville. She was a former supervisor with Whiteville Apparel.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at Cypress Creek Original Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Squares and Dr. Tommy Bryson officiating. Burial will follow in the Hosea Simmons Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Herman A. “Joe” Cartrette Sr.; a son, Herman A. “Joey” Cartrette Jr. and wife, Teresa of Whiteville; three brothers, D.F. Jones and wife, Glenda of Sanford, Sammy Jones and wife, Mary of Whiteville, and Gene Jones of Shallotte; two sisters, Ethel Ward and husband, Marvin of Nakina and Alease Register and husband, Albert of Hampstead; two grandchildren, Brittany Thompson and husband, O’Neil, Joshua Cartrette, all of Whiteville; a great-granddaughter, Jayden Thompson.

She was preceded in death by a brother, the late William H. “Bud” Jones.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15 at the funeral home.

DELORES ELLEN WARD

CHADBOURN -- Delores Ellen Ward, 73, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn.

Survivors bya son, Joseph “Joey” Ward of San Diego, Calif.; three daughters, Barbara Hayes of Chadbourn, Mary Ivey of Evergreen, and Judy Watts of Chadbourn; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

MAMIE ELIZABETH HAYES

CERRO GORDO -- Mamie Elizabeth Hayes, 85, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at Liberty Commons, Whiteville. She was the daughter of the late Julious and Vennie Fairfax Hayes.

Final rites were held Thursday, Feb. 15, at Worthington Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Fairfax officiating. Burial followed in the Green Cemetery, Cerro Gordo. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a brother, Ernest Hayes of Cerro Gordo; and four grandchildren.

CHADBOURN --Sarah H. Oliver, 57, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

GEORGE McCRAY

TABOR CITY -- George McCray, 72, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at Loris Community Hospital, Loris, S.C. He was a university custodian and United States Army veteran.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Club 15 Civic League Building with the Apostle Viola Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Columbus County Singing Union Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Annie McCray; three daughters, Sharon Fonseca of San Diego, Calif., Shelia Whisenant of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Pamela Green of Fort Worth, Texas; three sons, Leon McCray of Fort Worth, Texas, Kenneth McCray and Anthony McCray, both of Tabor City; seven sisters, Queen Sherman of Jamesburg, N.J., Janie Smith of Tabor City, Bessie Ellerbe and Armatha Jordan of Loris, S.C., Andis Mitchell and Janie Mae Evans of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Rosa Hargrove of Staten Island, N.Y.; two brothers, L.V Graham of Tabor City and Willie Graham of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 16 from noon until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at Club 15 Saturday following the service.
