Riegelwood construction kicks into high gear

The foundations and footings are poured, and this morning, volunteers descended on Pretty Branch and Holly Tree lanes to begin rebuilding lives.

A tornado that swept through the Riegelwood area Nov. 16 killed eight people and destroyed or damaged dozens of homes.

The N.C. Baptist Men have been spearheading a rebuilding effort in the community, and framing began this morning on the first three homes to be rebuilt.

Most of the current volunteers are from the group, along with a number of other area civic and church groups.

“This has been a while coming,” said Carey Fleming, coordinator for the group.

The N.C. Baptist Men Disaster Relief organization specializes in cleanup and rebuilding after natural disasters.

They played a major role in the ongoing recovery from Hurricane Katrina, and representatives from the group were on the ground in Riegelwood within hours of the tornado strike.

Fleming said a number of crews have already been at work on the first three homes, and more than 100 volunteers are expected this Saturday.
The group hopes to have some of the families in their new homes by April.

While the big rebuilding push kicked off this morning, Fleming said the recovery will take some time yet.

“We still have plenty to do,” Fleming said. “If people want to help, we can put them to work, I assure you. We need volunteers, donations, and prayers, above all.”
