OBITUARIES

REV. VOLLIE ELRAY SMITH

SHALLOTTE -- Rev. Vollie Elray Smith, 72, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. He was born in Brunswick County on Oct. 24, 1934, the son of the late Cosby and Versie Smith.

Smith retired as pastor of Ash Freewill Baptist Church and in addition owned a small engine repair business. He has served in the United States Navy.

Final rites were held Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Old Shallotte Baptist Church with the Rev. Landis Lancaster officiating. Burial followed at Smith Cemetery, Ash. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Service, Supply Chapel handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Iris G. Smith of the home; a son, Randy Smith and wife Carolyn; a daughter, Tammy Tetreault and husband Jim; four brothers, Paul, Bobby, Elray and J.B. Smith, all of shallotte; two sisters, Dora Blackman of Lake Waccamaw and Ester Tyler of Hallsboro; three grandchildren, Mark Smith, Shaun Smith and wife Anita, and Brandon Gore, and three great-grandchildren, Alex, Chase and Chaden Smith.

Casket bearers were Chris Smith, Dean Smith, Henry Gales, Reggie Smith, Roger Gales, and Kenny Smith.

DAVID HAROLD NANCE

EVERGREEN -- David Harold Nance, 57, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Final rites were held Sunday, Feb. 18, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Williamson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Sue P. Nance of the home; a son, David Travis Nance of the home; and a sister, Janie Faye Hilbourn of Evergreen.

PAULINE EVELYN BRITT BULLARD

CHADBOURN -- Pauline Evelyn Britt Bullard, 87, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007 at Premier Living at Lake Waccamaw. She was the daughter of the late Dudley Horace and Mamie Gappins Britt and the widow of Clinton Barnes and George Franklin Bullard. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Barnes Sr. in 2004.

She was owner and operator of Chadbourn Motel and Restaurant in the late 1960’s and until her retirement in 1977.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Hubert McCleney officiating. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Merritt Barnes of Lake Waccamaw; a grandson, Kenny Barnes and his wife, Lynn of Lake Waccamaw; two great-grandchildren. Haley Barnes and Houston Barnes of Lake Waccamaw; cousins, Carolyn Britt of Chadbourn, Phyllis Taylor of Lake Waccamaw, and Harold Watkins of Chadbourn.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

SARAH HELEN OLIVER

CHADBOURN -- Sarah Helen Oliver, 57, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, Wilmington. She was a day care worker.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at St. Paul Holiness Church with the Rev. Charles McMillian officiating. Burial will follow in the Belvue Cemetery, Chadbourn. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Avery Oliver Jr.; a daughter, Linda Jones of Whiteville; a son, Larry Everette of Chadbourn; a stepdaughter, Katie Young of Evergreen; two stepsons, Dontrae Oliver and Richard Davis, both of Chadbourn; three sisters, Mary Lois Jones of Chadbourn, Minnie Dorothy McCormick of Washington, D.C., and Ella Hester of Hyattsville, Md.

Viewing will be at the funeral home on Monday (today) from noon until 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday following the service.

MYRTLE WHITE HAYES

QUEENS, N.Y. -- Myrtle White Hayes, 66, formerly of Whiteville, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007.

Final rites were held Monday, Feb. 19, at St. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Whiteville with the Rev. James Smith officiating. Burial followed in Belvue Cemetery in Chadbourn. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Leslie Hayes of High Point; four sisters, Velma Maultsby of Raleigh, Rachel White of Brooklyn, N.Y., Thelma Frye of Alexandria, Va., and Sandra Edwards of Whiteville; two brothers, Timothy White Jr. of Ft. Washington, Md. and Roscoe Calhoun of Tampa, Fla.

Friends may visit the family at the home of John and Sandra Edwards, 23 Whippoorwill Lane in Hallsboro.

DELORES ELLEN JEWETT WARD

CHADBOURN -- Delores Ellen Jewett Ward, 73, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the widow of Carl Ward.

Final rites were held Saturday, Feb. 17, at Worthington Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Coy Long officiating. Burial followed in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Joseph “Joey” Ward of San Diego, Calif.; three daughters, Barbara Hayes of Chadbourn, Mary Ivey of Evergreen, and Judy Watts of Chadbourn; a brother, Ray Burris of Chattanooga, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ANN FREEMAN JOHNSON

DETROIT, MICH. -- Ann Freeman Johnson, 89, formerly of Bolton, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2007. She was the daughter of the late Ebymezer and Eatta Young Freeman.

Final rites will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Lee’s Chapel AME Zion Church, Bolton with Elder Frank Graham officiating. Burial will follow in Restwell Cemetery #1, Bolton. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville will handled the arrangements.

Survivors include two sister, Juanita F. McAllister of Raeford, and Irene Webb of Detroit, Mich.; and a brother, John Freeman of Bolton.

THEODORE CLARIDA

NAKINA -- Theodore Clarida, 79, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

HUBERT MELVIN NORRIS

TABOR CITY -- Hubert Melvin Norris, 59, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at his home. He was born in Columbus County the son of the late John Venston Norris and Lannie Cartrette Norris.

Final rites were held Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Inman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Cartrette officiating. Burial followed in the Hinson Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Calene Norris of Tabor City; two daughters, Dorcus Cox and Lisa Guillen, both of Tabor City; two brothers, Charlie Norris of Tabor City, and Howard Norris of Dublin, Ga.; three sisters, Luria Godwin, Eloise Fowler and Margie Tyler, all of Tabor City, and two grandchildren.

AMANDA ROGERS LEWIS

BLADENBORO -- Amanda Rogers Lewis, 95, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clifton Lewis; two sisters, Lois Carrie and Pearl Wallace; and a brother, Gordon Rogers.

Final rites were held Sunday, Feb. 18, at First Baptist Church of Bladenboro. Bladen Gaskins Funeral Home of Bladenboro handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a brother, Charles Rogers of Albuquerque, N.M.

GLADYS COLEMAN

CERRO GORDO -- Gladys Coleman, 89, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born Sept. 21, 1917 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Melvin and Lula Williamson Coleman. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Leo, Ernest and L.D. Coleman.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, at Cherry Grove Baptist Church with the Reverends Josh Phillips and Elmore Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a brother, Sam Coleman of Lexington; and a sister, Christine Peggy Lane of Barnesville.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 795 Main Street.
