FAIR BLUFF -- Robert Hosey Drew, 78, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2007, at his residence following an illness.He was a native of Marion County, S.C., the son of the late Robert Everett and Golda Elliott Drew.
Drew had been a member of Fair Bluff United Methodist Church since 1957, where he had served on several committees and was active in the United Methodist Men. He was a former Boy Scout leader and a former member of Fair Bluff Fire and Rescue.
Final rites were held Sunday, Feb. 25, at Fair Bluff United Methodist Church with Rev. Neill Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Powell Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, N. Janie Drew of the home; three sons, Franklin Drew and his wife Lydia of Penscacola, Fla., Harrel Drew and his wife Charlotte of Mullins, S.C., and Jason Drew of Whiteville; a daughter, Jane Drew Jenkins and her husband Paul of Navarre Beach, Fla.; three brothers, Lester Drew of Fair Bluff, William Drew of Conway, S.C., and Carlyle Drew of Floyds, S.C.; a sister, Shirley Strickland of Floyds, S.C.; three grandchildren, Bryan Bult and his wife Michelle; Chris Drew and Haley Drew; and two great-grandchildren, Mary Drew Bult and Freeman Ford Bult.

WHITEVILLE -- Joseph Whidbey Griffin, 81, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2007, at Shoreland Healthcare. He was the son of the late John R. Griffin and Clara Moore Griffin.
Griffin was a member of the Whiteville United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a retired mail carrier.
Final rites were held Monday, Feb. 26, at Whiteville United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Benson officiating. Burial followed in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Turner Griffin; two daughters, Phyllis G. Merritt and Sue G. Lennon and husband John Moore Lennon, all of Whiteville; a brother, John R. Griffin Jr. of Maitland, Fla., a sister, Nell Campbell of Charlotte; a uncle, Bill Moore of Elizabeth City; and an aunt, Faye Frink of Charlotte.
Pallbearers were James Simmons, Roger Hammond, Van Underwood, Joey Benton, Lloyd Lennon, and Gene Worthington.
Memorials may be made to the Whiteville United Methodist Church Building Fund.
COUNCIL -- William “Bill” Draper, 76, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at Pitt Hospital in Greenville.
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Council with the Rev. Wade McLamb officiating. Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Savage Draper of the home; a brother, Ronald Franklin Draper of Reedsville; and two sisters, Kay McCollum of Ruffin, and Diane Cochran of Danville.
Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 26 (today) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

LAKE WACCAMAW--Agnes Ladrean Webb Campbell, 54, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was a active volunteer for Advantage Hospice.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Ronald Campbell; two daughters, Linda S. Brown of Lake Waccamaw and Sheila Spaulding of Whiteville; a brother, Joseph Marvin Webb of Lake Waccamaw; a maternal grandmother, Esther Green of Lake Waccamaw.
Viewing will be at the church from noon until 1 p.m., and there will be no viewing after the service.
CLARENDON -- Richard Lee Cartrette, 68, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late Troy and Lottie McPherson Cartrette.
Cartrette retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Bridge Maintenance Division.
Final rites were held Monday, Feb. 26, at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn with the Reverends William Jackie Godwin and Jonathan Simmons officiating. Burial followed in the McPherson Cemetery, Chadbourn. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn handled the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann Nobles Cartrette of the home; a daughter, Lisa C. McKeithan of Clarendon; a son, Keith McKee of Cerro Gordo; a stepbrother, Joe Cartrette of Whiteville; and a grandson.
WHITEVILLE -- Layla Caroline Moorhead, five month old daughter of Scott and Heather Smith Moorhead of Whiteville, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007 in UNC Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill. She was born Sept. 2, 2006 in New Han-over County.
Final rites were held Sunday, Feb. 25, at Highest Praise Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Lyndon Purifoy. Burial followed in the Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.
Survivors include her parents; her paternal grandparents, Nick and Jan Richardson Moorhead of Whiteville; her maternal grandparents, Herb and Kathy Faulk Smith of Nakina; her maternal great-grandmother, Darlene Faulk of Nakina.
LUMBERTON -- Corinn Britt Foley, 87, formerly of St. Pauls, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
Final rites were held Monday, Feb. 26, at Great Marsh Baptist Church, St. Pauls with the Rev. Brian Kinlaw officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Saint Pauls Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Franklin Foey of Fair Bluff, and Larry Britt Foley of St. Pauls; five grandchldren and eight great-grandchildren.
COUNCIL -- Zelma Kay Young Rhodes, 52, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2007, at her residence. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary K. Young, and a brother Barry Young.
Arrangements will be announced later by Bladen Funeral Home of Elizabethtown.
Survivors include her husband Clifton Rhodes; a son, Clifton Young of Council; a daughter, Erica Young of Council; four brothers, Herbert Young and Jerry Wayne Young, both of Council, Jerry J. Jacobs of Bolton, and Don R. Young of Winnabow; three sisters, Peggy Patrick of Bolton, Elsie Brooks of Council, and Rebecca Young of Lake Waccamaw; and three grandchildren.
WHITEVILLE -- Charles Edward Haley died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at his residence. He was a truck driver.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at the Brunswick Waccamaw Building, 600 Pine Log Road, Whiteville with the Biship Willie Powers officiating. Burial will follow in the Campground Cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his parents, Eva Haley and Willie Haley Sr. of Whiteville; two children, Frederick McCullum and Andre McCullum, both of Shelby; four sisters, Roberta Powers, Bessie McCutchen, and Marcella Powell, all of Whiteville, and Bobbie Ann McCutchen of Jersey City, N.J.; four brothers, Willie MacDonald of Whiteville, Marshall Haley of Fayetteville, and Arthur Haley of Seattle, Wash. and Charles Ray Haley of Brandywine, Md.

TABOR CITY -- Deryl Edward Watts, 49, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2007, at his residence. He is the son of the late Horace Edward Watts and Helen Louise Watts.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at Tabor City Holiness Tabernacle Church. Burial will follow in Myrtle Green Cemetery. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.
Survivors include a son, Danny Watts of Milwaukee, Wisc.; two sisters, Sherry Simmons of Tabor City, and Donna Borntiz of Miwaukee, Wisc.; a brother, Gregory Watts of Tabor City; and a stepfather, Donald Bornitz of Milwaukee, Wisc.
LAKE WACCAMAW -- Bessie Hall Burney, 104, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2007, at Premier Living. She was the daughter of the late James Hall and Margaret Lewis Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Burney.
Burney was the oldest member of the Lake Waccamaw Baptist Church. She worked for several years at Mann’s Department Store.
Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Lake Waccamaw First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Lake Waccamaw Hillcrest Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 26 (today) from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

ELIZABETHTOWN -- Fred Douglas Jackson, 83, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Mt. Olive AME Zion Church with the Rev. Haywood Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Carol J. Jackson; a daughter, Kathleen Bowens of Delco; three sons, Fred D. Jackson Jr. and David D. Jackson, both of Delco, and Walter A. Jackson of Burgaw; a sister, Ida Lee Brown of Wilmington.
Viewing will be at the funeral home on Monday (today) from noon until 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday following the service.
