OBITUARIES

LINDA HUNT JORDAN

RIEGELWOOD -- Linda Hunt Jordan died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born May 4, 1940 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Donald Ray Hunt and Ethel Lee Powell Hunt.

Final rites were held Sunday, Feb. 4, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. Interment followed in Ellis-Peterson Cemetery. Andrews Mortuary of Wilmington handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Clinton Jordan of the home; her children, Cindy Bordeaux and husband David of Delco, Charlie Ward of Jackson, Miss., Teresa Lattanzi and husband Jim of Wilmington, Neil Jordan of Wilmington; five grandchildren; two great-grandchldren; brothers, Wilton Hunt of Whiteville, Sam Hunt and wife Peggy of Riegelwood; a sister, Dalma Hunt Bullock and husband J.C. of Clarendon; and several nieces and nephews.

NANCY LUCILLE COLEMAN CHENIER

CHADBOURN -- Nancy Lucille Coleman Chenier, 77, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late John Pink and Nancy Jane Hinson Coleman and the widow of Sheldon Chenier.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Chadbourn Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Jim Skinner officiating. Burial will follow in the Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three daughters, Janyce Chenier Barnes and Paula Chenier Eissens, both of Chadbourn, and Lee chenier Ashburn of Mt. Airy; three sons, Billy Wayne Chenier and Chris Chenier, both of Chadbourn, and Jamie Chenier of Whiteville; a sister, Ethel Jones of Wilmington; a brother, J.P. Coleman of Chadbourn; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held from 7-9 Tuesday, Feb. 6 at the funeral home.

IDA BELLE HELMS

BLADENBORO -- Ida Belle Helms, 90, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at Liberty Commons Nursing Center, Whiteville.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Lewis-Bowen Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Clarkton Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Lewis-Bowen Funeral Home of Bladenboro is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include a daughter, Pauline Vannoy of Bladenboro; three sons, Harold, Charles, and Dewey Helms, all of Abbottsburg; a sister, Myrtle Britt of Orrum; a brother, Freddie Pait of Bladenboro; 10 grandchldren, 19 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Monday (tonight) from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

MAZZA LEE LIVINGSTON

BOLTON -- Mazza Lee Livingston, 69, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at Lee’s Chapel AME Zion Church. Burial will follow in Restwell Cemetery #1. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include four daughters, Elizabeth Dixon and Charlene Addi, both of Burlington, Patricia Livingston and Carol Smith, both of Stanford, Conn.; a son, Jerry Livingston of Stanford, Conn.; four sisters, her twin, Annie Kinlaw of Bolton, Ethel Grant, Marjorie Sawyer, and Irene Jones of Wilmington; two brothers, Willie Melvin of Bolton and Kenneth Melvin of Whiteville.

Viewing will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from noon-8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until noon. Viewing will be at the church Friday following the service. There will be a wake Thursday from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

WAITUS H. HARDIN

FAYETTEVILLE -- Waitus H. Hardin, 86, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2007, at his home. He was born in Whiteville.

Lt. Col. (AUS Retired) Hardin served in two Active Theaters of Operation during World War II as well as the 7th Infantry in Korea. A member of “The Greatest Generation,” he retired after 24 years of active service and received many commendations, awards and medals.

He earned a degree in journalism from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, served as historian of Ft. Bragg and the XVIII Airborne Corps and owned and operated his own locksmith business.

He will be interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, and there joins his wife of more than 60 years, Carolyn Larkins Hardin. Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home of Fayetteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two children, Col. James C. Hardin of Mt. Airy, Md. and Sharron Hardin O’Brien of Tavernier, Fla.; a brother, Irvin Harden of Shelby; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

VIOLET GAUSE BROWN
SHERMAN

CONWAY, S.C. -- Violet Gause Brown Sherman, 59, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late U.T. and Addie Mae Gause.

Final rites were held Sunday, Feb. 4, at Mitchell Sea Missionary Baptist Church in Green Sea, S.C. with the Rev. Vanzie L. Vereen officiating. Burial followed in Flag Patch Cemetery. Westside Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Runcie Sherman of the home; three daughters, Tracy Hutchins of Baltimore, Md., Theresa Dixon of Austin, Texas, and Barbara Williams of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Anthony Brown of Loris, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Natonya Moore of Baltimore, Md.; a stepson, Dexter Runcie Sherman II of Conway, S.C.; three sisters, Magaline Loften of Philadelphia, Pa., Nellie Vereene of Tabor CIty, and Lumina Vereen of Green Sea, S.C.; five brothers, David Allen and Rudy Toomer, both of Conway, S.C., Douglas Gause of Finklea, S.C., Johnny and Lester Gause, both of Green Sea, S.C.

LETHA CONNER WILSON

FAIR BLUFF -- Letha Conner Wilson, 86, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at her home following an illness. She was born in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Wilbur and Nettie Herring Conner. She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Wilson, a great-granddaughter and two sisters.

Final rites will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, at Porter Swamp Baptist Church with the Reverends Neill Smith and Tim Moore officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Herbert Taft Wilson of the home; three sons, Jimmy Dean Wilson and Kenneth Wilson, both of Cerro Gordo, and Gary Wilson of the home; two daughters, Betty Brock of Fayetteville and Carolyn Stone of Lumberton; a brother, H.W. Conner of Fair Bluff; three sisters, Shelby Jean Shaw of Bladenboro, Ruby Helms of Abbottsburg, and Katheline Chapman of Blythe, Ga.; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

JIMMY BRYAN STANLEY

TABOR CITY -- Jimmy Bryan Stanley, 59, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at Loris Hospital. He was born in Columbus County, the son of Vera Smith Stanley and the late Cecil Bryan Stanley Sr. He was a farmer and a veteran of the United States Navy.

Final rites were held Sunday, Feb. 4, at Forest Lawn Baptist Church with the Reverends Jim Ponder and Hubert Stanley officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Jason Bryan Stanley of Tabor City; a daughter, Jennifer Brooke Stanley of Green Sea, S.C.; his mother, Vera S. Stanley of Tabor City; and a grandchild.

LEO GREENWOOD

TABOR CITY -- Leo Greenwood, 81, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Loris Community Hospital. He was born in Horry County, S.C., the son of the late Leonard Greenwood and Addie Hill Greenwood.

Final rites were held Sunday, Feb. 4, at Gapway Baptist Church with the Reverends Earl Nobles and Henry Ward officiating. Burial followed in the Gapway Cemetery, Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Jane W. Greenwood of the home; two sons, Larry Greenwood of Tabor City, and Landis Wilson of Sophia; two daughters, Linda Suggs of Loris, S.C., and Blenda Fenner of Randleman; three brothers, Lonnie Greenwood of Thomasville, Eddie Greenwood of High Point, and Tommy Greenwood of Greensboro; two sisters, Lois Ann Watts of Brunswick, and Eula Mae Nance of St. Pauls; nine grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

EVERGREEN -- Stuart Randall Kissam, 30, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Evergreen Baptist Church with the Rev. Ricky Donaldson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Tracy Jordan Kissam of Evergreen; two sons, Corey Kissam and Carson Kissam, both of Chadbourn; a stepdaughter, Abigail Jordan of Evergreen; his parents, Johnny F. and Iris Rogers Kissam Jr., both of Evergreen; a sister, Lynn Kay Sasser of Evergreen.

ACME DELCO -- Luther James Moore, 66, died at his residence.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Union Baptist Church, Lake Waccamaw with the Rev. Ronald Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Moore of the home; seven children, Donna, Terry, Stephen, Robert, Jamar and Jeffery Moore, and Stephanie Lawrence; two brothers, John Henry Moore and Marvin Webb; five sisters, Martha Jones, Mary White, Beatrice Jones, Rachel Lennon, and Agnes Campbell.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 6 from 2-7 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. and at the church one hour prior to the service.

MARCELLAS SMITH JR.

HALLSBORO -- Marcellas Smith Jr., 75, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at his residence.

Arrangements will be announced by Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville.

CARSON ELROY ETHERIDGE

WHITEVILLE -- Carson Elroy Etheridge, 66, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was the son of the late James Carson and Nettie Mae Long Etheridge.

Etheridge was the owner and operator of Etheridge Well Drilling in Whiteville for 34 years and a veteran of the United States Army.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday (today) at Worthington Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home of Chadbourn is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Yow Etheridge of the home; a daughter, Carsha Etheridge of Chadbourn; two stepdaughters, Bonita “Tammie” Ward and Lisa Hinson Gore, both of Whiteville; and five grandchildren.

ELIZABETHTOWN--McNeil Baldwin Jr., 42, formerly of Whiteville, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at Bladen County Hospital.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Central Missionary Baptist Church in Whiteville with the Rev. David Flowers officiating. Burial will follow in the Welches Creek Cemetery, Whiteville. Peoples Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include his father, McNeil Baldwin of Whiteville; his mother, Ernestine Troy Baldwin of Wallace; four sisters, Marilyn Richards of Waxhaw, Alice Faye Gross of Wilmington, Brenda White of Silver Spring, Md., and Maxine Bell of Chadbourn.

Viewing will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 6 from noon until 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Wednesday from noon until 1 p.m.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

WHITEVILLE -- Baby Shena Frances Hatcher died at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Jan. 3 at Holy Bethel Community Cemetery, Clarkton. Union Funeral Home of Whiteville handled the arrangements.

Survivors include her parents, Brenda Menser and James Hatcher; two sisters, Dena Marie Hatcher and Kayci Cameal Hatcher, both of Whiteville.

LEDWARD ‘HEB’ BROWN

FAYETTEVILLE -- Ledward “Heb” Brown, 71, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007. He was born in Columbus County, the son of Garnie Mac and Mary Nettie Hardin Brown.

GERALDINE BLAKE

NAKINA -- Geraldine Blake, 69, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at Columbus Regional Healthcare. She was born in Columbus County the daughter of the late Thomas Jenkins Williamson and Maggie Belle Gore Williamson. She was the widow of Gilbert Blake and was formerly married to the late Edward Watts.

Blake retired as a CNA with Columbus Regional Healthcare. After retirement she continued private duty nursing. She was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church. Peacock’s Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Final rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Bethesda United Methodist Church with the Reverends Carroll Fitzgerald and Allen Pearsons officiating. Interment will follow in the Nakina Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Peacock’s Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Watts Brown of Whiteville, and Christina Watts Bartley of Nakina; two sons, Donnie and Greg Watts of Nakina; two sisters, Carol Jones and Barbara Moore of Whiteville; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Dean Watts and Tommy Watts.

ANITA BECK SOLES
BORDEAUX

SHALLOTTE -- Anita Beck Soles Bordeaux, 66, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at the Brunswick Hospital, Supply. She was the daughter of the late Burris Wilson Beck.

Bordeaux was a graduate of Duke University and was a certified registered nurse anesthesis.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday (today) at Inman Funeral Home Chapel in Tabor City. Inman Funeral Home of Tabor City is handling the arrangements.

Survivors include three sons, Douglas Soles of Manteo, Simon Wilson Wayne Soles of Shallotte, and Robert Graham Soles of North Wilkesboro; her mother, Ann Beck of Tabor City; three brothers, Doug Beck of Tabor City, David Beck of North Wilkesboro, and Kelly Beck of Greenville; three sisters, Lenora Taylor of Lumberton, Mary B. Elmore of Wilmington, and Susan B. Mauro of Manteo; and eight grandchildren.

WHITEVILLE -- Archie C. Smith, 81, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at SunBridge Care and Rehab, Elizabehtown.

SAM SCOTT

FAIR BLUFF -- Sam D. Scott Jr., 93, owner of Scott Motor Company in Fair Bluff for more than 50 years, and a leading civic and community worker during his long life, died Friday at his home here.

Scott’s customers ranged from Columbus and Robeson counties in North Carolina and Horry and Dillon counties in South Carolina at his auto dealerships here and in Lumberton.

Known as “Mr. Sam” to hundreds of people, Scott was an avid sportsman and enjoyed fishing in the Lumber River that passed by his home, and hunting.

Scott was born in Columbus County, the son of the late Sam D. Scott Sr. and Eliza Janie Powell.

He was a member of Fair Bluff United Methodist Church. Final rites were held Sunday, Feb. 4, at Fair Bluff United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Powell Cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff handled the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Scott of the home; a brother, I.M. Scott of Lumberton; two sons, Chris Scott of Fair Bluff, and Sam D. Scott III of Raleigh; a daughter, Anne Scott Miles of Raleigh; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchldren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles A. Scott.
